Mine is set to come on 6am-9pm if drops below 18 degrees. Last week it came on an average of 1-2hrs a day (Midlands)
I have it set to 14 at night, so not cold enough to come on yet during the wee small hours and rarely does even in Winter.
Anyone else had theirs on or am I mad and it's way too early? I have an underactive thyroid and feel the 🥶 so 16-17 is just too cold for me if drops that low.

Oh here we go, the start of the competitive under-heating season.

I know, my windows are wide open even if it snows, I can't understand how anyone can live with central heating. I just wear my oodie , my snow boots and my fur hat, and with my heated throw I'm just too warm.

Also in the south and no heating here. Says 16c on thermostat but ds and I don't feel the cold and I was way too warm at work yesterday when it was on in a classroom.

Dd might put it on if she's round but that's it and not usually till October.

I am generation x and grew up with coal fires and no central heating in NE Scotland so my perspective is probably skewed.
I also remember heating breaking down a lot in school in the 80s and the teacher would just tell us to keep our coats on in the lesson.
Today the school would close!

We have Nest, DH set it to 21°C during the day and 16°C at night. So all year if the house drops below that (like 19-20°) it tells the boiler to come on. We used to have the "I'll put the heating on for an hour in the morning and the evening" type but apparently keeping the house at a steady temperature is more economical than letting it get very cold and having to keep the boiler on for ages to heat it up again. There must be some truth in that as our gas bill dropped by a third after installing Nest!

It does suit me better, my blood circulation is rubbish and if it gets cold it's actively painful. I don't actually find 21 is warm enough for comfort but I just add more layers and use blankets, as it's fine for DH and DS. Saying that, we do have windows upstairs permanently open, it's too stuffy otherwise in the bedrooms and the bathroom benefits from the ventilation.

Central Scotland here, I’ve been putting mine on for a few hours in the evening, getting a bit chilly when the sun sets.

Oh here we go, the start of the competitive under-heating season.

Why can't people state their preferences without being accused of being "competitive underheaters"

Lala1962 · 01/10/2024 09:58

We live in a small wooden single-storey cottage and have one of our storage heaters on just to keep the temperature above 16/17 degrees inside. A couple of nights recently we’ve had 2 on when it’s dropped below 5 degrees overnight. Wouldn’t usually have them on this early but we have a 3 month old baby this year so needs must.

Maybe because some of us actually get cold!

2Little · 01/10/2024 10:07

We have had the heating on a few times. But, I only have it on when the kids are home. During the day I put on another layer and in the night got a heated throw for the sofa. Last year are most expensive month of gas and electric was £400. No one has money like that to burn.

I went to convent school in the '80s, in a 19th century building with big draughty sash windows and old, wholly inadequate oil fired radiators. One particularly cold winter, our form teacher brought a thermometer into the classroom. It registered at 9°C. This was with all windows and the door shut, and the radiator on. Needless to say, we were allowed to wear coats, hats, scarves and gloves indoors. Seems mad to think of it now!

Oh here we go, the start of the competitive under-heating season.

Haha isn't it awful..another Mumsnet oddity.

I bet a lot of people who say they don't have their heating on unless it drops below 13 degrees are the same people earning £150k and saying they are "struggling" with paying their children's school fees and can only spend £500 a month on eating out.

If you're cold, put your heating on. It. Is. Not. A. Competition.

OldTinHat · 01/10/2024 10:22

I'm in the south, windows still open 24/7.

I've rehomed a dog so doors are open too, whilst she settles in.

coffeesaveslives · 01/10/2024 10:24

But not everyone feels the cold in the same way. It's 16.8 in my house but I'm not remotely cold - I'm quite happy in leggings and a jumper with the window open for the cats to come in and out.

Other people would think that was freezing and would need the heating on.

It's almost like we're all different 🙈

outforawalkbiatch · 01/10/2024 10:28

No heating on, window open
18c inside and I'm ok at that temp

That’s not something you see here very often! Hats off to you for honesty.

SJM1988 · 01/10/2024 11:41

I noticed our has come on the last few mornings - its set to 16 between 6am and 8am. Everyone is out most of the day so its not on. Then it comes on to 16 again between 3pm and 7pm. Not come on in the evening yet though.
I'm Midlands too.

Oh here we go, the start of the competitive under-heating season.

Yep!.

I've been on here since the dawn of time and every year you get the posters who never seem to turn on their heating all winter, not even when the snow in their living room is six inches deep.

I live in the south east, so not the coldest part of the country, and I've had my heating on several times recently, especially in the evening. I set it at 23 degrees because otherwise my house is too cold; in fact I've had it on all day a couple of times.

I'm not sitting around in shorts and t-shirts either. I'm usually wearing at least one jumper, sometimes two, over the top of a thermal vest.

I refuse to be cold.

I see no virtue in freezing.

coffeesaveslives · 01/10/2024 11:58

I very much doubt the majority of people with their heating off are doing it to be virtuous or because they enjoy being cold.

They either can't afford to have the heating on as much as they'd like, or they genuinely just don't feel the cold.

I always get told I'm a competitive under-heater on these threads (under previous names) but I genuinely find having the heating on above 19 degrees to be really unpleasant.

If I was at someone's house and it was 23 degrees I'd be sat in a t-shirt and wanting to go for a walk 😂

muddyford · 01/10/2024 13:59

We've had ours on for an hour in the morning but just had the gas fire on in the sitting room in the evening.

Dogsandnumbers · 01/10/2024 14:00

Sharptonguedwoman · 01/10/2024 08:39

Can I ask where you are? (not precisely, obviously). I'm in the soft south and the heating's on a bit already. More because it's been so dank.

I'm rural East Anglia.

CableCar · 01/10/2024 14:01

Ours is on. Comes on when the house drops below 19, although I have boosted it to 21 today because I was cold!!!

Pardon? Oodie, snow boots (inside) and a hat. Honestly? Or are you sending this thread up? To choose to wear snow boots and a hat indoors, if you can afford to put the heating on is unusual.

I agree. I have friends who are wealthy and they refuse to put their heating on until a certain date. I just don't get it... Having a warm home is healthier for you and the structure of the house! I don't understand why people don't do it out of principle because it's still only 1st October. We live on a cold, damp, little island.
Obviously I completely understand the need to be frugal or save money / can't afford it, but not people who are complaining that it's cold and just not putting their heating on 'because it isn't November yet'.

Hyperion100 · 01/10/2024 14:14

If I set my thermostat to come on at 20 degrees my heating would be on 9 months of the year. We have a cold house!!

16 degrees and working from home. Just have a blanket over my legs.
