Manners - do you do any/all of these things?

Is it bad manners to not do any of these things?

Tucking your chair in when you've left a table

Putting your basket back after using the self checkout in the supermarket

Closing doors and drawers after opening them

Stacking plates/bowls and rubbish in a restaurant after a meal to make it easier for the server to collect/clear up

I do all except the bottom one.

I read somewhere that to stack plates is ‘uncouth’ and decent servers would rather you left them tidily in front of you so they can collect in the order they wish.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 29/09/2024 16:57

I'm uncouth, I do all of the above.

BlueMum16 · 29/09/2024 16:57

I'm not sure any of these are about 'manners' but more about tidying.

And no. I definitely don't stack plates for the server. As PP, that's not good manners.

Nostalgianostalgic · 29/09/2024 16:57

Yes I'm never sure about the plate stacking one.

I try to tidy up but I'm never sure if I'm making it worse because the waiter might want to collect in their own way.

I do all apart from the latter. I went to catering college and it’s actually harder to sort out when diners do it, although I know they’re trying to be helpful.

NoNameNoPlace · 29/09/2024 16:58

I do all except the last one, they are good manners. But I pass the dishes over when they show they want to take them but it’s a bit far to reach.

ZenNudist · 29/09/2024 16:58

I wouldn't say those are manners. I'd say they are tidy habits. It's not bad manners to leave your basket in a supermarket or plates on a table in a restaurant as there are servers there to clear up. Putting your chair back under a table or closing cupboards is basic common sense and should come naturally to most people. An open cupboard could cause someone to bang their head and a chair block people's way.

LynetteScavo · 29/09/2024 16:59

I wouldn't stack plates in a restaurant, although I would leave my knife and fork merkt, as well at the napkin. Also I wouldn't make the bed in a hotel (although I would leave it reasonably neat, so easy to make).

Don't get me started on people
who don't return trollies.

This

CandleLlama · 29/09/2024 17:00

Don't stack the plates, it makes them harder to carry so they'll have to do more than one trip. Do the rest though.

WandaFishy99 · 29/09/2024 17:00

I do put the cups and plates back on the tray in M&S coffee shop because the people who work there use a tray to clear tables.

ThatMakesSense · 29/09/2024 17:01

Yes apart from stacking plates

Funnywonder · 29/09/2024 17:05

I tuck my chair in after use in a cafe or restaurant, but not at home. I usually only tuck it in once I’ve barged into it and sworn a few times😆 All those other ones, yes, including the plate stacking.

LostOnTheWayToManderley · 29/09/2024 17:06

All apart from stacking plates. I do push them all to the edge of the table so they’re easier to collect. I see it as respect for other people’s time as why should they tidy up after me?

Mind you, I also strip the bed when I stay in a hotel which MN regards as ‘doing unpaid work’ but again takes me 5 minutes and that 5 minutes is worth much more to the cleaner than to me.

mushypaperstraws · 29/09/2024 17:07

Yes all except the last one.

So many people forget that what we mostly called manners is simply not being kind to other people and not being selfish

VictoryOrDeath · 29/09/2024 17:15

Oops, I generally do the last one and I was a waitress for a long time when I was younger. I think it's a bit dependent on the table layout, so I do it if some seats are difficult to get to. Maybe I'll stop.

crumpet · 29/09/2024 17:16

I would move something which is difficult for a server to reach, but I don’t stack.

Biggirlnow · 29/09/2024 17:22

I don't plate stack. I don't always close doors either, it depends on the context. I do the others.

Absolutely - manners are about other people feeling comfortable, which is why it's terribly impolite to point out someone's poor manners.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 29/09/2024 17:24

I don't stack plates. I kind of have drawer blindness though. I can walk past an open drawer and don't notice it.

ttcat37 · 29/09/2024 17:35

I’m not sure those examples are ‘manners’, maybe the tucking the chair under the table but certainly none of the others. Stacking plates at the table in a restaurant is a big no no ‘manners’ wise.

I8toys · 29/09/2024 17:37

I always stack plates. Twice I've been thanked by waiting staff as having good manners and asked if I worked in hospitality.

Customers stacking dishes was my pet hate as a waitress. People did all sorts, like stacking with napkins in between plates or cutlery between dishes and I hated it. Everyone has their own way.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 29/09/2024 17:42

I wouldn't describe those things as having manners (or not). It's just basic common sense to tidy up after yourself, imo.

I wouldn't stack plates at a restaurant though as it can make things harder.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 29/09/2024 17:43

I do all except stack plates, I think they're polite and good manners. I don't stack plates because I assume the waiter will have a preferred method, and quite honestly if I'm paying eg 50 quid each or more I'm sure they wouldn't expect me to. If I go to a cafe where food or drink comes on a tray I put everything back on the tray at the end.
