Manners - do you do any/all of these things?

Is it bad manners to not do any of these things?

Tucking your chair in when you've left a table

Putting your basket back after using the self checkout in the supermarket

Closing doors and drawers after opening them

Stacking plates/bowls and rubbish in a restaurant after a meal to make it easier for the server to collect/clear up

I actually think manners are difficult to define - I think people with truly good manners can put others at their ease, and enable social situations to run more easily. So, it's less a formula of Do X, don't do Y, and more a way of being.

That's very true.

dermalermalurd · 30/09/2024 16:10

All but the last which depends where I am; in a cafe - yes, in a restaurant - no.

Newdaylucky · 30/09/2024 16:30

Stacking plates makes the back of the plates dirty - gross

HansHolbein · 30/09/2024 16:39

I do them all apart from the last one. My children do the same.

No because it can be difficult to push/pull chairs but it depends on where and how much space there is

Putting your basket back after using the self checkout in the supermarket
Back where?
Closing doors and drawers after opening them
Drawers, yes always
Doors- depends on the circumstances

Stacking plates/bowls and rubbish in a restaurant after a meal to make it easier for the server to collect/clear up
As an ex waitress I hate this.
Leave the staff to sort the plates themselves.

I do all except the bottom one.

I read somewhere that to stack plates is ‘uncouth’ and decent servers would rather you left them tidily in front of you so they can collect in the order they wish.

Yep. Same with me.
I also think leaving shoes tidily together when you take them off instead of in a heap is good manners, DH.

zingally · 30/09/2024 16:51

I do everything apart from the last one.

But don't get me started on returning trolleys.

I read somewhere that returning trolleys (or not) is a good indication on whether a person is, on the whole, a "good" member of society. There is no reward for doing so, but neither is there a penalty/punishment for not returning it.
It's whether they have an internal motivation/desire to "do the right thing", follow the rules, make things easier for the workers etc.

I have been known from time to time to tell people "that's not where the trolley goes you know." It doesn't go down well, but if they're a bit embarrassed, then good.

Lolatusernamesuggestions · 30/09/2024 16:57

I try to do these but I can be a bit oblivious about spacial awareness and have been roasted a few times in shopping malls for being too close to people when it's heaving. To be honest they end up being ruder than my original error by shouting and getting angry. I always happily point this out in a polite way of course.
As for cupboard doors in our house, kitchen regularly looks like we have a poltergeist. I need to train them all better.

Gelasring · 30/09/2024 16:59

I return trolleys, I don't return baskets because I'd have to leave the store and go back in which seems a bit excessive. If there's an obvious place by the till to stack them I will though.

I do every single one of these. I used to work as a waitress in a hotel restaurant and the amount of people who cant be arsed stacking their plates or tidying up after themselves is beyond me

orangesandlemonssaythebellsofstclements · 30/09/2024 17:00

I do them all, including stacking plates which until this thread I thought was a nice helpful thing to do.

Are there really people that don't tuck in chairs or close draws?? How strange. Don't these things get in their way?

I know people don't put back baskets and trolleys but I do.

Edit: actually come to think of it I don't ever use the baskets.

LovelyDaaling · 30/09/2024 17:04

I do all but the last one. Servers often want to clear the plates in their own way so they can balance the plates on their arm. They wouldn't always welcome the customer stacking dishes for them.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/09/2024 17:04

I work in retail and I can tell you that 99% of people don't put their baskets back when they use the self serve checkouts. When we're really busy we frequently run out of baskets at the front of store because none of us have time to collect them up and put them back, and customers get snotty because they have to come and get one off the self serve checkout (where they are usually badly piled up and teetering).

Please return your baskets to where you got them from. It saves us so many problems.

Yet there are so many contradictory replies re plate stacking...

If that many people aren't returning them that suggests you need a better process. In some of the supermarkets near me, returning a basket would mean me going out through the exit which is one way, back in through the one way entrance then going round the store again to get back out. All that after I've just scanned my own shopping? No chance. I stack them nearly out the way so nobody falls over them but that's it

Nope, no one way system and the self serve tills are the last thing before the basket drop off point, Just people thinking it is 'someone else's job.'

belleandsansebastian · 30/09/2024 18:21

So for those of you that stack the plates. What if there is leftover food? Are you scraping everything onto one plate? If so that is so rude to other customers trying to eat their meals to see scraps of food all being mixed together in a heap. It actually makes me nauseous just thinking of it.

NotTru · 30/09/2024 18:24

Top three - yes.

DH very rarely tucks his chair under when he leaves somewhere. I usually do it for him, it just isn't automatic for him. I joke he went to a rubbish primary school. Pleased to say that [adult] DS always des!

Bottom one - depends. Cafe type place - yes. Nice restaurant - no.

ShortyWentLow · 30/09/2024 18:26

I do them all. I worked as a pot washer as a teenager so I'll stack them in a helpful way. I definitely don't squash napkins into the dirty plate or stuff them into glasses.

Simonjt · 30/09/2024 18:29

We eat on the floor, so no chairs to tuck in

We don’t stack plates, this is bad manners as it makes it harder for the wait staff to collect your plates, although it isn’t quite as bad as people who put their tissue inside a tall glass.

ivykaty44 · 30/09/2024 18:33

Stacking plates/bowls and rubbish in a restaurant after a meal to make it easier for the server to collect/clear up

this is not good manners and often really not helpful. I’ll go to clear a table and want to pick up a plate, then the second and turn and scrape. You stacking food on plates in a big pile makes my life more difficult and when I get back to the kitchen a shitshiw. I’d really rather you enjoyed the service & sat back and relaxed

AllAboutNiamh · 30/09/2024 18:34

All except the last one which is poor etiquette and definitely not mannerly.

Lovelynames123 · 30/09/2024 18:34

When I clear tables I can clear upto 4 by stacking them on one arm and leaving the other hand free, if they're stacked I can only clear one table at a time so would prefer unstacked. However, I always appreciate people are trying to be helpful so would never make them feel uncomfortable about stacking them...but put your knife and fork together so we know you're finished!

ShazzaF · 30/09/2024 18:35

I've done lots of waitressing in my time and always hated it when customers stacked plates! I appreciated that they were trying to help, but it made my life harder not easier!
