Manners - do you do any/all of these things?

Is it bad manners to not do any of these things?

Tucking your chair in when you've left a table

Putting your basket back after using the self checkout in the supermarket

Closing doors and drawers after opening them

Stacking plates/bowls and rubbish in a restaurant after a meal to make it easier for the server to collect/clear up

Depends on the type of restaurant maybe - but I genuinely don't expect to clear the table if I've paid restaurant prices and service charge.

I do get hacked off by people that don't clear trays & debris away in a self service restaurant.

Differentstarts · 29/09/2024 17:51

Surely 99% of people do these their pretty basic. I don't stack plates but I clean up after myself and kids if we've made a mess.

sharpclawedkitten · 29/09/2024 17:52

I do all of them, although I don't stack plates but do put things onto the tray in a self service place.

I also thank bus drivers and drivers who stop for me at zebra crossings, but not pelican crossings because there is less discretion with a red light.

StoatofDisarray · 29/09/2024 17:56

I do all except the bottom one. My mother and sister both worked in restaurants and it pisses them off when customers do this.

HoppityBun · 29/09/2024 17:58

You’re asking people to agree with you that these things should be done.

My views are:

Tucking your chair in when you've left a table - yes but it’s not the end of the world if this isn’t done

Putting your basket back after using the self checkout in the supermarket - yes but people forget and it’s good manners imv to put back baskets that others have left, and to do that without feeling aggrieved because there may well be a reason this hasn’t been done and anyway it’s only a small matter

Closing doors and drawers after opening them - I have ADHD and this is hard for me to remember

Stacking plates/bowls and rubbish in a restaurant after a meal to make it easier for the server to collect/clear up - as a former waitress, I very much preferred to do this myself at the table, but if it’s self service then yes, do it and take it to the station

FaiIureToLunch · 29/09/2024 18:00

It’s absolutely bad manners to be stacking plates in a restaurant. And it’s always done by people trying to be polite which is a wee shame. But NO! No just don’t - nobody working in a restaurant likes it! It looks bad to anybody overseeing staff as though like you’ve been waiting ages.

JoJothegerbil · 29/09/2024 18:06

I do all of them except the last one. I always get annoyed when DH does this in restaurants and tell him to stop.

Natsku · 29/09/2024 18:09

If I forget to shut a drawer or close a cupboard door in the kitchen, DD will very quickly and sternly remind me! She hates it when drawers and doors are left open.

Always tuck my chair in and put baskets and trolleys away (and any stray ones I see on my way out). Don't stack plates but if there are leftovers on different plates I scrape them onto one plate. But I don't often eat at restaurants with table service, usually self service ones and I always take my tray in those, and if there's a bin to scrape leftovers into I do that.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 29/09/2024 18:10

All except the last one.

People leaving cupboards and drawers open - why? Why would you do that?

FutureMandosWife · 29/09/2024 18:11

I do all on that list. In a restaurant all plates stacked up at the end of the table.

BettyBardMacDonald · 29/09/2024 18:12

Stacking plates and rubbish at a restaurant is definitely uncouth.

The rest are normal basic decency.

SemperIdem · 29/09/2024 18:12

I do all except stack plates. What’s logical to me as the customer in terms of stacking may not be to the person who has to actually carry them. I always make sure the table isn’t a mess though (have children so no food left on the table/floor etc).

AmeliaEarache · 29/09/2024 18:14

People who leave cupboards and drawers open should be shot by firing squad

Bbq1 · 29/09/2024 18:15

All of the above. Sometimes stack plates.

Brobdingnagian · 29/09/2024 18:15

@WandaFishy99 I thought you were supposed to take the tray over to those wheeled racks and slide the tray full of stuff into it yourself? I’ve never been in one that doesn’t have that that and where customers don’t clear their own tables.

HappyDane · 29/09/2024 18:16

I do all of those except for the last one. Stacking tableware isn't good manners and often makes it harder for the waiting staff.

Disasterclass · 29/09/2024 18:18

I don't understand the stacking baskets after the self checkout one. Where do you stack them? I've never seen a place where you would put your basket, and aren't you carrying your shopping by then? Have never seen anyone else do it either. Usually they stack up a bit then a staff member clears them and has a wheely thing they collect them up in but it's not nearby in between times.

Clearing the table I don't do either, just annoying to the staff

dizzydizzydizzy · 29/09/2024 18:22

I don't usually stack plates in a restaurant but I do everything else.

CatamaranViper · 29/09/2024 18:23

As a former server, please don't stack your plates.
Staff have their own methods for carrying as much as they can and balance things on the arms/trays in a way that works for them. If you stack them then often the bottom of the plates are dirty so we can't even unstack them. It just makes things more difficult. Push them to a clear part of the table.

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/09/2024 18:23

Doesn't it differ? Restaurant, table service, don't stack, because they like to have plates separated by cutlery so the mess from the bottom plate doesn't smear all over the bottom of the plate above. Tea shop, esp self service, stack and put back on tray. ( and check that there isn't a trolley for returning your tray to).

Restaurant, big group - stacking appreciated because it's hard to get round the table - especially if it's so tight that plates had to be passed down the table when meals are served.

People who leave cupboards and drawers open should be shot by firing squad Same goes for people who move stuff to get something at the back, and leave all the stuff on the floor afterwords. DH and DS2, I'm looking at you!

ginasevern · 29/09/2024 18:26

I'd push my chair in if it was sticking out a lot. I close doors and drawers if I opened them (surely that's fairly normal?). At the supermarket I add my basket to the others stacked under the checkout but don't return it to the entrance, if that's what you mean? I don't stack plates in a restaurant but I do gather up napkins, sauce/butter wrappers if we've used them and put them on one of our dirty plates.

I tuck my chair in normally. Wouldn't say 100% of the time but I do try to.

I used to always put the basket back. But just last month my supermarket changed the layout of the self service tills and you now need to walk back towards the queue past all the tills to get to the pile. So I don't now. I tried once and caused more chaos because it was busy and people were trying to get past and i was carrying 2 bags and the basket. The pile used to be at the exit of the tills so you just dropped it off as you left. No idea why they moved it.

99% of the time yes I shut drawers etc. Very occasionally I might forget if I'm distracted or in a rush.

I don't stack plates no. But I will often make sure any loose cutlery or tissues or food is all off the actual table. The servers often pile it in a certain way to carry it. So it's easier for them to arrange in the way that works best.

mindutopia · 29/09/2024 18:31

Yes, I do all those things except stacking plates. Or at least not at like a nice restaurant. It’s easier for the server just to grab them as they need them. I do however put everything back on the tray at, say, Costa, and will clear my table, wipe it down if it’s somewhere that provides a place to return trays/cup/etc.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 29/09/2024 18:33

Unless I was in a Roadside caf I wouldn’t stack the rubbish and plates. It’s really uncouth. Waiting staff know what they are doing and I don’t want to sit with a pile of manky dishes in front of me as though my custom is so unwelcome that the polite thing to do is clear yourself away for the more deserving patrons.

HappyDane · 29/09/2024 18:36

I had assumed that meant in a restaurant. Yes of course if it's a cafeteria where you're supposed to do it yourself that's exactly what I'd do. If there's a trolley I'll return it, if not I'll leave it neatly on the tray or at the end of the table. I really dislike leaving a mess - it's about respect for others as well as self-respect.

Shopping basket - my local one has a space for baskets under the unit.
