For the last 5-10 mins I have heard slight banging, tapping, sounds to be at the back of the house. I am so scared, just me and my little one at home

Hope you're ok OP! Could it be the wind?

outforawalkbiatch · 29/09/2024 00:16

It could be anything from the wind moving something to a hedgehog
Have you ever heard how loud hedgehogs are? I got really frightened by one once!

Do you feel able to look outside from a window?

MontyVerdi · 29/09/2024 00:17

Are you both in a room together? If so you could lock the door. It could just be an animal in the garden

Scutterbug · 29/09/2024 00:17

Does it sound like it is indoors or outdoors?

MontyVerdi · 29/09/2024 00:18

I was thinking fox. I hate it when dh is away so I totally get how you feel.

Purple0 · 29/09/2024 00:18

It sounds like outdoors to me. It's sporadic noise but is still ongoing

Do you have anyone you can call to come over and help you feel safe? And have a look at what it is?

ProvincialLady2024 · 29/09/2024 00:18

Put all the upstairs lights on and be noisy. After ten minutes go downstairs she out all the lights on.

Scutterbug · 29/09/2024 00:21

It could well be a hedgehog. We had one that made an awful noise o e night by bashing into the back doors!

Purple0 · 29/09/2024 00:21

I have the landing light on atm

Not long moved in and I have no curtains on the patio doors and my garden is pitch black so I am scared to go down and check. I have a fear of looking out of windows at night when I can't see anything

It'll be the wind then.

No-one's going to try for 5-10 minutes to break in.

Burglars would want to be in and out in way less than that.

BoreOffAboutYerChickensEmma · 29/09/2024 00:25

Lots of similar noises outside here tonight, it is windy.

One of the best things i got is lightbulbs you can control using your phone or smart speaker. I can turn lights on downstairs without getting out of bed. Also Ring cameras at the front and back.

another79 · 29/09/2024 00:25

I think if it was anyone sinister they would be trying to be quiet. I would say it's an animal.

CustardySergeant · 29/09/2024 00:26

Birds on the roof over my utility room make a hell of a row. You'd swear there was someone up there hammering or moving heavy furniture, it's so loud.

AutumnTimeForCosy24 · 29/09/2024 00:26

Animals are MUCH louder than you think they could be! It'll just be some inconsiderate little hedgehog/fox/cat - tell it to mind its manners!!

I had this once, DD (then 16) and I were both terrified as it sounded like someone trying to get through the back gate. We made a massive row, turned all the lights on and made it clear that we were not home alone.

Next door had got a new rabbit and it having a go at its hutch door was the noise we heard!

tattygrl · 29/09/2024 00:55

When you're in a new house, it's very scary sometimes at night, when you don't know what the usual noises are! You haven't had time to adjust to them, yet. Can you call someone for some moral support while you go and check? It's almost certainly fine. Keep updating us.

AdoraBell · 29/09/2024 00:58

It probably is an animal. Hope you can sleep.

BeNavyCrab · 29/09/2024 00:59

I can understand why you feel worried but it's quite likely to be something innocent. I'd check the doors and windows are all locked, without turning on any lights and try to stay out of sight. If you think that there's an actual threat, get your baby, phone and go into the bathroom, lock the door and call the police. Don't go investigating outside in the night because it leaves your child vulnerable.

Do the investigation for the noise in daylight when there's more people about, if you do need help.

loropianalover · 29/09/2024 01:00

If it’s the same intermittent sound for 10 mins plus it’s just an animal snuffling around, or something trapped in between something and blowing in the wind.

It’s so unsettling being in a new house! I moved to my current house about a year ago, I still remember the first month I was hyper vigilant to every tiny bump, even waking from my sleep.

Marcipex · 29/09/2024 01:00

Any friendly neighbours?
I would have a look around for you.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/09/2024 01:05

Turn on your lights and make some noise. If you're brave enough, turn on the torch on your mobile and shine it down on your garden.

Inyournewdress · 29/09/2024 01:10

How are you doing Op?
