Tree branches against a window? Hope you're asleep now anyway!

When you're in a new house, it's very scary sometimes at night, when you don't know what the usual noises are! You haven't had time to adjust to them, yet. Can you call someone for some moral support while you go and check? It's almost certainly fine. Keep updating us.

This.

Try not to relax if you can - new homes do feel scary at night, especially when you have bare windows.

Put the radio on, a podcast, music or even the TV. You need to make the space feel normal again.

Red0 · 29/09/2024 02:03

I’m sure it’ll be nothing sinister, but if you can, go and turn some lights on upstairs or flush your toilet - make some noise. That would scare a burglar I’d have thought. Although I’m sure that’s not what it is.

LBFseBrom · 29/09/2024 02:04

It is likely to be an animal or something knocking against the wall because it's windy, I sometimes heard similar sounds from the back garden in my old house, got used to them.

Flooding the house with light will frighten away an animal. Please put the lights on wherever you can.

I am sorry you are frightened and understand it but burglars tend to strike when people are at work.

Louise303 · 29/09/2024 02:17

Keep the lights on take no chances if it is any attempted break in they will go knowing the lights are on and something has been heard. A lot of chance thieves will watch out for new residents moving in. It happened to us years ago we moved a lot of items in over days and we were burgled. We were not at the property during the night the lack of curtains they may think you are not there. Hopefully it's an animal and nothing else but do invest in ring cameras from and back if you are on your own with a little one.

AlpacaMittens · 29/09/2024 02:34

It's mostly likely a fox or something. Just for your peace of mind, lock up doors and windows and keep some lights on around the house. Get some sleep, it really won't be anything sinister.

I feel you 100% BTW - also not long moved in new house, no curtains on patio doors, and long pitch black garden at night. I'm shitting myself looking at it! Foxes and hedgehogs making noise all the time and scaring me, the idiots.

Bumbleebeetree · 29/09/2024 02:54

Badgers are really noisy. We had one outside our patio crunching on something when we just moved in. It terrified us because it sounded like someone trying to get into the house but it was just in its own world scraping on the patio and crunching on a mouse for about 20 minutes. Hope you get some sleep x

LookAtThatCritter · 29/09/2024 03:11

New houses noises can be so scary. I agree with other commenters - if it's been going on for a while it's more likely to be a branch tapping or an animal. Please update us when you can!

Sammy900 · 29/09/2024 03:14

phone torch...open the top floor window and have a look

stayathomer · 29/09/2024 06:09

Hope you’re asleep op. Get curtains onto those doors asap- I used to drive myself nuts looking out into the blackness!

FerienInLipizza · 29/09/2024 06:28

Hedgehogs make an astonishing amount of noise as they have no predators so don't give a shit. They get quite big too.

I used to live in an ancient thatched cottage with walls made of clunch which is dried mud and sticks basically.

One night a hedgehog was rubbing long the bottom of the wall behind the shrubs and it sort of echoed up into my bedroom and made an unworldy noise. It took me half an hour to have the balls to shine a torch and work out what it was as putting the radio on full blast didn't bother it so I knew it wasn't a ghost. They hate music, ghosts.

Birds on the roof over my utility room make a hell of a row. You'd swear there was someone up there hammering or moving heavy furniture, it's so loud.

Or *in the roof! I told my mum that pigeons were driving me crazy, cooing 24/7. She Pooh-poohed it as me being noise sensitive (I am, to be fair) until she tried to sleep in there! Turns out a doorstep trader who had taken a look in the roof asking for work and saying it was needed had moved some tiles. At best count we had about 100 adult pigeons in the roof and 3 nests of fledglings! Took weeks to safely evict them all!

LeavesTrees · 29/09/2024 07:01

I hope you are ok OP and managed to sleep.

When we had an attempted break-in at a previous property at night they tried to kick the door in (they didn’t get in). People who I know who have had it happen have either had opportunists who have seen an open window etc, or blatant like what almost happened to us. So it’s not likely to be occasional noises.
A possibility is it was mice, when we had them in the house they could be surprisingly noisy at night.
Also we have a regular magpie who likes to walk along our guttering and that is quite noisy, we always hear him.

Justsayit123 · 29/09/2024 07:03

Squirrels…. Pesky little blighters

paisley256 · 29/09/2024 07:08

Hope you slept well op.

Thunderpants88 · 29/09/2024 09:27

Any update op?

Purple0 · 29/09/2024 10:50

Morning, thank you everyone for replying. Managed to get some sleep, the noise died down after a while x

Inyournewdress · 29/09/2024 10:53

Good news! Hopefully just an animal or a branch in the wind.

MontyVerdi · 29/09/2024 11:09

No problem PurpleO. I totally understood where you were coming from. When my dc were younger, dh was away a lot. We've no family nearby as we live abroad and I'm quite hard of hearing. I managed to get a vibrating pillow which was attached to the fire alarm so after that I slept a little better but was always worried about a break in or not hearing things in time.

There was always an explanation for any random noise that I heard but my imagination always got there first!

Purple0 · 29/09/2024 11:21

Thank you. Yes it’s definitely a combination of being alone with my little one, new house, feeling a bit on edge too. Hopefully it will get easier as we settle in more

Missionimprobable · 29/09/2024 11:21

I'm glad you survived 😁
I don't blame you for being scared, I'm late 50's and I dont like looking outside into the dark garden, I have the patio door open for the dog but when it's dark I'm actually scared to reach outside for the door handle just in case someone grabs my arm.
Completely irrational.
Maybe get an outside motion detector light and if you can afford it a camera, I do like the idea of a lamp that you can turn via your phone, dsis has one ,it wasn't too expensive, Amazon sell them.

MontyVerdi · 29/09/2024 11:23

Happy New home 🌻

AlpacaMittens · 29/09/2024 12:16

Porch lights are broken in ours, will get sensor ones installed soon. Until then, I've got a strong torch from amazon that literally lights up the whole garden when I use it, but it somehow feels even scarier being able to see everything all the way up to the end of the garden 🤣😭 Completely irrational!

Flozle · 30/09/2024 20:44

Purple0 · 29/09/2024 00:22

Not long moved in and I have no curtains on the patio doors and my garden is pitch black so I am scared to go down and check. I have a fear of looking out of windows at night when I can't see anything

Me too: Scream has a lot to answer for 😊

Donsyb · 30/09/2024 21:39

outforawalkbiatch · 29/09/2024 00:16

It could be anything from the wind moving something to a hedgehog
Have you ever heard how loud hedgehogs are? I got really frightened by one once!

Do you feel able to look outside from a window?

Funny story - not long after my cousin and her husband had moved in together, they phoned my uncle one night to say they thought someone was trying to break in. My uncle and dad went round - it was two hedgehogs having sex against the back door 😂
