Ive got covid. How worrying is the new variant and why are they still not insisting we wear masks.

What is it with people on here? Just read the heating comments, everyone would rather freeze than have a bit of heating on in September.
Now this - all those who died forgotten, including all the health workers. I think Chris Whitty said it was difficult to know what was the right balance, not that they got it wrong. I suspect NHS staff told to carry on because there's something of a staff shortage.
By the way, actual flu is pretty awful, if it is flu it's impossible to just 'carry on'.

Not at all. Flu can be asymptomatic. It's a misnomer that you have to be really ill to have the flu virus. People seem to really like using it as a descriptive term though.

Good luck making most of my friends and relatives wear any kind of mask again. Nobody believes they work or would follow any rules and believe lockdown to have been a waste of time and money.
( not my opinion, but heard it enough to know that many feel this way )

Im going to sleep now. Tomorrow is another day. Ive taken some painkillers and will do another covid test in the morning which i fully expect to still be positive. The last time i tested was on wednesday. I really dont have the energy to sit in A and E. I dont like strange doctors. Thè last time i went to A and E was for side effects of some antibiotics. I sat there for 5 hours. I was eventually seen but i could not go through that again.

I am not keen with the out òf hours hub. I prefer seeing the doctors at my own surgeŕy. Having said that not all the doctors at my surgery are good. I zsaw a new one who i nearly complained about as she was not professional and tried to chat to me about her life which was not on. She told me she didnt want to be a doctor anymore as she didnt like it. I dont think any doctor should talk to a patient like that.

There are two senioor doctors at the surgery who ive known for years and they are excellent so i try to see one of them if i can. They are fine examples of how doctors should treat you and they give a lot of good advice and i have a lot of respect for them. One of them ive known for 30 years

If masks are so pointless why do doctors and nurses wear them in the Hospital when they treat patients

Doctors and nurses don't wear them to prevent respiratory viruses like COVID.

A lot of the time it's to prevent things like them getting blood and bodily fluids of patients in the nose or mouth.

Even so, hospital staff have very strict protocols around how to wear masks that people outside hospitals don't follow. Which makes them ineffective.

You've clearly got a LOT of time on your hands love
You'd rather essential surgery was cancelled?
And no there's not a 'relief' surgeon

You can wear a mask if you want to. I won't be wearing one now or ever again thanks

Motheranddaughter · 29/09/2024 08:09

If people want to test and wear masks then that's fine, but I won't be doing any of it
IMO the government overreacted

Wouldnt you be even a bit curious whether you had cobid. Most people i know test if unwell

Motheranddaughter · 29/09/2024 09:04

No ,not in the slightest

KnottedTwine · 29/09/2024 09:11

No, if you're unwell then you deal with the symptoms and try to get better. I think I probably had it in the summer as I had headache, sore throat, chills, aches, so I took paracetamol, Strepsils for the sore throat and bundled myself up in warm clothing. Why would it matter if it was flu, covid, or some other viral thing?

I wouldn't be curious enough to buy tests. Did a couple of times when I still had a box of the free ones, as they were there and it was mildly interesting so why not. Most people lost access to free tests about two and a half years ago, so even if they have any left they probably won't be in date.

Halfemptyhalfling · 29/09/2024 09:18

Take it very gently if still getting symptoms so doesn't become long COVID

Your holiday could be just the thing if it involves lots of rest in a warm climate - less so if it's hiking in Scotland...

Flute56 · 29/09/2024 09:23

Three people i know have recently been unwell. All three of them did covid tests and they were all positive. They tested a week later and was negative. I really dont understand why people say they cannot be bothered to test. Total utter madness

No, it's not "total utter madness". 🙄

If you are ill, you stay at home and try to get better. I wouldn't go and see my mum who is 80 or my friend who is going through chemo when I'm ill, and the specific name of that illness does not matter.

Also I am sure you would not approve of someone who suspects they have this terrifying, dangerous thing called Covid popping along to their local pharmacy or supermarket and buying tests, spreading their dangerous illness to half the town.

Long story short - not everyone is as scared of Covid as you are.

the80sweregreat · 29/09/2024 09:36

I guess people can't be bothered to test because it's pretty meaningless now. Work don't ask people to test anymore and many don't pay sick pay , so people carry on regardless a lot of the time anyway and just spread it around everyone else.
My old tests are out of date now , so I need to buy some more.
Most people are Covid deniers now too, wouldn't do lockdown or masks again anyway

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/09/2024 09:37

I was blasé about Covid. So many sneering comments on here.

Last year l got Long Covid. I’m still bed and housebound 15 months later. There was nothing wrong with me at all before this. Covid has destroyed my life.

All l can say is Covid isn’t a cold. It isn’t flu. I’ve had post viral syndrome after flu. This is a whole different level.

I think thoughts about Hubris might be useful for some people on this thread.

KnottedTwine · 29/09/2024 09:40

No we do get it @ArseInTheCoOpWindow and I'm sorry that has been your experience with getting Covid. However, my personal experience is that I have had it definitely once, probably twice and for me it was nothing more than a bad cold.

I had it twice too. And it was like a bad cold.

The second time it destroyed me. Don’t make the assumption that you won’t get LC just because it hasn’t affected you yet.

the80sweregreat · 29/09/2024 09:45

I agreed with lockdown and mask wearing, but many many people I've come across are of the opinion it was hyperbole and a ' waste of time ' cost millions , a cover up, all about control , only the flu and wearing masks has been proven not to work anyway ( although I admit they didn't ask us to wear masks from the start)
I don't necessarily agree with all the above , only what I've heard from people in all walks of life and status and peddled a lot by the media and certain news outlets.
Good luck to any government faced with another pandemic of any kind. I fear that many wouldn't comply with much anymore or maybe if they didn't have any choice in the matter ( they wouldn't wear masks for example)

wombat15 · 29/09/2024 09:48

Masks work if fitted properly and I still wear one in theatres, public transport etc. Covid is different to other infections as it is much more infectious. We don't know what the long term effects of continuous infections are.
