Ive got covid. How worrying is the new variant and why are they still not insisting we wear masks.

I got Covid last December.
I rang my employer to go sick.
They said I could come in to work!!

I said first of all I feel shit (I did) and secondly morally I wouldn't come in knowing I had Covid! I could potentially pass it on to some who was immune suppressed or frail!

spuddy4 · 28/09/2024 11:27

You can wear your mask if you want, nothing stopping you at all and plenty of people in the supermarket I work at come in wearing them. Don't inflict them on everyone else though, if you have enough belief that a mask works well enough you do you and let the rest of us be.

I just went to get some more testing kit from Boots and spoke to the pharmacist and he told me I should wear a mask he said it is essential because if you am still testing positive I should wear a mask

You don't really expect to test positive and then get the usual headaches and aching joints then they subside and you think you're on the road to recovery only to find out that they come back

I only tested positive for one day, when I tested negative I gradually felt worse and was feeling more horrendous for another four days!
Such is Covid sadly!

I know several people who still test. Its irresponsible not to

Do they test for all respiratory viruses or just covid?

I'm going to report this. I think OP's on the wind up, claiming to be confused about why no one had covid 30 years ago.

OP are you this anxious about flu? Because covid is pretty much the same.

The Covid I had last year was nothing like flu , I was ill for a month and still haven't regained my sense of smell properly.

To give the benefit of the doubt, I think maybe her "they weren't around 30 years ago, where did they come from" comment could have been about coronaviruses in general which were discovered ~60 years ago (although thought to have been around much much longer).

But I may be being too generous.

TickingAlongNicely · 28/09/2024 12:38

Will you tell the taxi driver you are covid positive?

Or is it ok to be in a confined space with them... its rather hypocritical really.

Have you seen whether you can get the medication from something like a supermarket through deliveroo?

underused · 28/09/2024 12:40

15th October is two weeks away and your sore throat started over two weeks ago, calm down...

I suggest you get some multi vitamins, take some paracetamol and try and boost your recovery by eating extremely well, if you don't already.

I eat very well normally but when I have a cold starting I make a flu busting chicken soup containing ginger, garlic and turmeric (have a look for recipes online)

Dwappy · 28/09/2024 12:43

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/09/2024 12:14

The Covid I had last year was nothing like flu , I was ill for a month and still haven't regained my sense of smell properly.

The flu I had around 15 years ago was so much worse than my covid. I was off work for a month with flu and wasn't fully better for at least 3 months. Both my covid bouts I had cold like symptoms for a few days and was fine within a week.

I'm not saying this because I don't believe you. I absolutely do. But covid can be very much like flu for some. And like colds for others. And worse than flu for others. And totally asymptomatic for other. Which is just like flu and many other viruses.
Flu can kill people. Flu can also be totally asymptomatic in others. Just like covid can both kill and be asymptomatic.

LostOnTheWayToManderley · 28/09/2024 12:50

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/09/2024 09:02

Is that true because I wasn't allowed to have an operation recently if I'd had covid recently?

That was to protect you, not stop you giving Covid to your surgeon. If you’ve had Covid recently then your immune system is busy fighting off the infection, and you might not therefore heal from the op as quickly.

Flute56 · 28/09/2024 19:33

Has anyone had shortness of breaths with covid I have got shortness of breaths and I can't do much because I get so out of breaths so I'm trying to get some help from the NHS but it's not working they've told me to go down to my local A&E hospital and I don't want to do that because you sit there for hours but I can't cope anymore with this shortness of breaths it's really really wearing

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 28/09/2024 19:54

If your shortness of breath is bad you should go to a and e to have your sats monitored Flowers

You don't have an oximeter at home?

I have Covid right now and have had it 4 times. My husband has long covid and has been ill for 4 years. The asthma he had as a child came back.

For some people it's not a cold and it's still killing a dozen people a week.

So you should go to a and e

Can you hear yourself? You asked for help, they gave you advice.
You refuse to go!

Stupid
Some people still die of COVID

Notnowbarnaby · 28/09/2024 20:19

There’s such a weird combative tone to this post.

OP I’ve had Covid recently. Both myself and my other half were floored by it despite having it previously. It was obviously the new strain as it was very flu like. We had fever and headaches and cold symptoms and generally felt terrible with body aches.
its three weeks later, I still have a cough and my sinuses are now very sore, I am also full of cold. This is what it was like before for us so I’m not alarmed at all.
you have to decide what your own safeguarding looks like when you have Covid - I tested because I was worried we had actual flu and I have an elderly relative who I would hate to give it to.
Nobody can tell you how you will feel by the time your holiday comes round, if you want a medical opinion see a medical professional.

As for where it came from, unless you were asleep for the whole of 2020 and 2021 I’m sure there’s plenty of news articles at your fingertips on Google with plenty of theories.

What else do you think they can do for you on a Saturday night? Genuine question.

If you actually can't breathe then call 999.

Eh so it's OK for you to infect the poor unassuming taxi driver?

She’s going to wear a mask.

Im not calling 999 as the shortness of breath is an inconvenience not an emergency

Masks don't work. I'm never wearing one again.

Novaavon · 28/09/2024 20:41

I was hospitalised in my 20s when I got flu and it took me 6 months to recover. In contrast I had covid 2 weeks ago and it was like a bad cold for 2 days and I didn't have to stay in bed. Life has to go on and we have to learn to live with it, like any other illness.

If you’re breathless then go to A&E. Yes you’ll be triaged and you may have to wait depending on the urgency of other patients. If it’s deemed urgent you won’t.

Seriously however where have you been for the last four years?

Yes I agree. We still have a small number people (of all ages) wearing masks at the shops in my area (in Australia). I assume that they either have Covid or have compromised immune systems. No one looks twice at them and it’s not seen as unusual anymore like it would have been prior to Covid. Previously, you would have had to go to a Chinese or Korean area of our city to see mask wearing.

I got Covid earlier this month for the first time. I got my groceries direct to my car boot and didn’t go out anywhere at all until my symptoms went. Thankfully my workplace asked me to stay at home - some of my poor colleagues have had it 5 times. It felt like mild flu in the first 4 days, so I was happy to rest and watch TV. I made a fast recovery though as I had all the available vaccines and boosters and felt almost normal on day 5. The only problem was that when the temperatures dropped in the second week from around 25 degrees to 18 degrees I began to cough like crazy. The cough stopped when the temperature went back up again.

enpeatea · 28/09/2024 21:23

What is it with people on here? Just read the heating comments, everyone would rather freeze than have a bit of heating on in September.
Now this - all those who died forgotten, including all the health workers. I think Chris Whitty said it was difficult to know what was the right balance, not that they got it wrong. I suspect NHS staff told to carry on because there's something of a staff shortage.
By the way, actual flu is pretty awful, if it is flu it's impossible to just 'carry on'.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 28/09/2024 21:44

I have it too. Been in bed for 3 days feeling weak and rough. Also bad headache, very sore throat, cough and a bit breathless when I get up for bathroom etc. Get well soon x
