To think throwing soup over Van Gogh paintings won't stop oil.

There are other ways of protesting oil that make more sense than chucking soup over Van Gogh paintings. Or they need to explain why soup and why Van Gogh more clearly.

It’s not totally different, both come down to raising awareness, hence me listing education and campaigning, why on earth be so dismissive of tried and tested tactics?
How is chucking soup at artwork going to change a climate deniers mind exactly? Irrelevant anyway because it’s big businesses that need to make changes.

Because the usual tried and tested tactics aren’t enough. We need to see much more rapid and decisive action to phase out the burning of fossil fuels, and it’s not happening at the moment.

I’ve been supporting environmental charities since the 80s and there are thousands of peer reviewed scientific journal articles documenting climate change and the relationship with the rise of fossil fuel use. The evidence is clear but politicians won’t push for change unless we, the electorate tell them what they must do. And shout louder than the fossil fuel industry lobbying groups.

And how is pissing the general public off working for you? Do you really think that noise about something is the same as change? It's really not

Ok, so then how will stunts like this garner public support and make big business change? Do you have any evidence to show this stupidity actually has a positive impact? Is this approach working?

Listen very carefully I shall say this only once...the green agenda being hijacked by these eejits has stopped me voting for them. When they were a sensible choice I voted for them so jso has stopped me voting for their preferred choice. I refuse to align myself with eejits.

This is ridiculous.

Who is ‘them’ that you refuse to vote for?

JSO is not a political party!

If the offences met the definition of terrorism they'd be charged with terrorism.

On no planet is 'throwing soup' terrorism.

I think JSO perfectly fit the definition of terrorism.

“the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.”

Physically stopping civilians from getting to medical appointments/work/school/care/ambulances causes physical harm. That is violent protest.

JSO should be charged with acts of terrorism.

Yes it has been working. Labour announced no new oil and gas licences for the North Sea. That’s a good start.

no it wont and it didnt as there were other factors that made the vote possible, at least from what ive read

That’s really not enough to suggest this is working, they didn’t say they were doing it because of JSO. I really don’t think you win hearts and minds by harassing people, sorry.

True - once it was made clear to the public that the oil and gas from the North Sea wouldn’t lower their energy bills, support for new licences reduced substantially.

But public discourse, including on fora like these are read by all kinds of people. If there’s a public mood of, ‘well I don’t like JSO actions but I’m worried we aren’t doing enough to tackle climate change’ , that’s influential. But to really make sure that the message gets across, write to your MP, or book an appointment to see them.

You can’t possibly attritube that to the actions of JSO. We have known about climate change long before the JSO nuts were on the scene, and were already taking steps to address it.

To credit that to JSO is hilariously inaccurate. The only thing they have achieved is to showcase how bizarre they are.

So how do you win hearts and minds?

Personally I find that reasonably intelligent people are really quite concerned anyway.

And most of the rest will join them once the cost of food becomes exorbitant, or some other thing that directly affects them.

It is working because of the public discourse it’s creating, not because we didn’t know about climate change before 2022 🤣

I’ve already listed the ways I think they should approach this.

The problem is it’s not individuals that need their minds changes, again, it’s big businesses. Me not using plastic straws makes zero difference when huge manufacturers are still putting their products in plastic packaging.

and in some cases its whole countries but you dont see just stop oil protesting these

CasualObserver53 · 28/09/2024 19:23

Oh course it won't, OP.

They're all silly, spoiled children. I'm not sure jail is appropriate for these mindless acts of vandalism (perhaps community service and lifelong ban from galleries and museums would be better).

But you're right - none of this childish nonsense is helping their 'cause' if you can even call it that. They clearly don't understand the first thing about energy production!

Ponderingwindow · 28/09/2024 19:26

these protestors are idiots.

if they want to make a difference, they need to do the work. Throwing a tantrum doesn’t solve problems. They should go to university and get degrees that will allow them to study alternative fuel sources. They should take low level positions with politicians so they can work up the food-chain until they can run realistic campaigns for office themselves. They should position themselves in the massive bureaucracy that actually advises and helps to run the government.

if you want to change the world, you earn yourself a seat at the table. It’s hard and it’s slow, but plenty of us are doing it. We stopped protesting when we were actual children because we realized it accomplished nothing and we got to work.

LaurenOrda · 28/09/2024 20:55

Agreed.

This and their other stunts make them look like loonies - and by association - it makes their cause look like a loony concept.

Serious issues are not progressed throwing soup or disrupting the snooker.

The issue of climate change needs to become 'mainstream serious' like drink driving or child abuse. Get some clever sympathetic marketing whizz types to come up with an advertising concept. The people that did the Paralympian 'super humans' for channel 4.

Honestly. Appeal to hearts and minds. So much more effective than loony stunts.
