To think throwing soup over Van Gogh paintings won't stop oil.

There are other ways of protesting oil that make more sense than chucking soup over Van Gogh paintings. Or they need to explain why soup and why Van Gogh more clearly.

And it won't change anyone's behaviour one iota

None of us know what behaviour changes will be publicly supported in a decade, two decades, three decades.

They’re that thick. Dismissing them this way is comforting for those who don't like their actions but shows no thought.

They're not 'thick', they are approaching an issue starting from a different starting point and have different priorities.

I've dealt with a few of them in my line of work and personally I thought they were quite thick.

I'm also not interested in 'the cause' or whatever they are standing for (I'm guessing the stopping of oil production?) because of their twattish actions. Which is what people are talking about. It's a turn off and a complete own goal. If they weren't thick they'd realise that.

dropoutin · 27/09/2024 19:14

Good thing these dangerous anarchists got custodial sentences, particularly considering how long it must take to wipe all that soup off a pane of glass. It gives one faith in the fairness and deterrence of our judicial system.

Non-custodial sentences should be reserved for genuinely victimless crimes like Huw Edwards downloading category A child pornography.

I believe their aim is to bring people's attention to it which they're doing. There's nothing to be proud of in polluting the planet, so I'm not sure why people keep saying that.

It's comforting to dismiss people who view things differently as 'thick'.

It's foolish, but I can understand why you would do it.

No doubt some of them are thoughtful and some are not.

I’m a doctor and I wholeheartedly condemn JSOs foolish, idiotic, unacceptably immature actions.

To stop patients attending appointments for investigation, treatment, diagnosis and follow up is tantamount to causing physical harm.

No one has that right because they “believe” they have a higher moral cause. You waste my time as a doctor when patients do not attend, you cause untold mental stress to patients. It is cruel and inhumane.

Never mind the scores of other people that were inhibited from getting to work, attending job interviews, school, family events, ambulances. I don’t know what job you do, but a lot of people including Locum doctors do not get paid if they don’t turn up to work.

JSO are a bunch of highly indulgent useless idiots. All doctors condemn them. The soup thing is also just weird?

Think traffic actions and soup throwing are a bit different.

Do doctors have strong views about soup?

Having a different viewpoint isn’t the only thing that led me to think they were thick. Words and actions.

You might disagree with what they do, but people who only have insults like 'thick' 'wankers' 'idiots' to throw around and can't engage with what's driving the behaviour are not looking that thoughtful.

People who throw soup at a painting thinking that this will achieve what their aims are (like I said I don’t know) are idiots on the thick side.

BorgQueen · 27/09/2024 19:29

I might take them seriously if they weren’t running around decked in clothing/shoes created with petrochemicals and using phones/tech which rely on the use of rare earth minerals and copious amounts of plastic.
I would actively support them if they were campaigning/fund raising for the end of plastic use and fast fashion.
Plastic is the biggest threat to the planet, not burning oil or gas.

But it has achieved their aim.

You're determined to pretend/believe their aims are something else.

That's what I mean by not being thoughtful. You're not thinking about the reality, you're too wedded to your own mindset.

They've achieved their aim.

I'm not saying you should support their aim. But you should be able to see that publicity is an aim, and it was achieved.

This.

I haven't moaned about them. I'm just wondering if there's meaning behind their choice of protest

They keep targeting Van Gogh paintings for some reason, specifically his Sunflowers painting. Perhaps they don't know the difference between sunflower oil and crude oil?

That's what I mean. Have they explained why?

The publicity isn’t about what they’re trying to achieve though - which will never happen as a result of their actions.

The publicity - if that’s their aim as you say - is about how they are idiots. The end.

Slow hand clap if you think they’ve achieved this and that it’s a good thing. Don’t think ‘any publicity is good publicity’ applies here 😂.

We're getting to the root of my question. I usually associate them with sitting on motorways. I suppose they did throw paint at the stonehenge but I thought that was meant to visually represent the pollution caused by the road next to it. But soup on van gogh seems a departure from this.

I bet they didn’t even recycle the soup cans that were thrown.

Kiuyni · 27/09/2024 19:42

We are all brainwashed by our need to own nice cars and buy oil, so no wonder they get jail terms, despite trying to draw attention to the fact that climate change is going to kill all of us

scalt · 27/09/2024 19:47

The only thing JSO have taught me is that JSO are idiots.

mollyfolk · 27/09/2024 19:49

JSO are baffling to say the least. I mean I agree with the cause the way they go about it is an exercise is how to lose support and alienate people.

I feel like the artists, art-lovers and environmentalists should all be friends.

The planet would be better off without us though.

OonaStubbs · 27/09/2024 20:41

How does their goal of bringing attention to their cause actually HELP their cause? It doesn't. It just makes them look like idiots and hinders their cause.

MeltedMind · 27/09/2024 20:50

They aren’t thick - they are misguided and disillusioned and want the fight without believing in the cause .

BanksysSprayCan · 27/09/2024 21:08

One of their main demands has been met by the government, as they will not issue new licenses to explore new oil fields.
