To think throwing soup over Van Gogh paintings won't stop oil.

There are other ways of protesting oil that make more sense than chucking soup over Van Gogh paintings. Or they need to explain why soup and why Van Gogh more clearly.

Attention, but not good attention

Bunch of wankers

But you're talking about the wankers and know what they stand for.

China’s emissions are so large because China is making plastic crap for UK (and other nationalities) consumers

This is never going to be an excuse for JSO inflicting harm on members of the public.

Begsthequestion · 27/09/2024 16:46

Surely getting their own UK government to take climate change seriously enough and pressure other governments too is more realistic?

Have you not heard of Net Zero and all of Miliband's plans to make the country climate friendly?

This.
If you want to stop oil
make public transport reliable, cheap and frequent.
Train fares in U.K. are a disgrace
Rail services are dire.

People are going to use cars unless something is better and cheaper.

Throwing soup is just inane and idiotic.

Elderberrier · 27/09/2024 16:51

Begsthequestion · 27/09/2024 16:47

How? Pray tell.

Like any other grassroots movement - political lobbying, awareness raising campaigns, media work, education in schools, yada yada. Collective activism takes place by other groups all the time and can happen in ways that illuminate the issues without pissing everyone off.

MeltedMind · 27/09/2024 16:52

Begsthequestion · 27/09/2024 16:47

How? Pray tell.

They are well known and have a platform but they keep pulling stunts like this when everyone already knows who they are . They could support community projects, do workshops in schools to educate , put pressure on companies who they think are causing the problems, get out there and help clean up the environment etc etc etc.

I think that the sentences are really harsh

JSO were conducting violent protest. You simply cannot have people purposely hindering the passage of emergency workers and stopping people getting to work/school/hospital/appointments. That had to be condemned. They had to be sentenced fairly, and they were. Not harsh in the slightest.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/09/2024 16:55

No, they were convicted because of throwing soup over a painting

Not for blocking roads - I agree if the sentences were for that then that's fine - it's dangerous

MissEsmeWatson · 27/09/2024 16:56

Surely an Andy Warhol would be more appropriate?

Molly546 · 27/09/2024 16:56

Attention seeking idiots. I'm glad they got jail time, unfortunately it also makes them martyrs to the cause which just encourages other likeminded idiots to do equally stupid things.

bergamotorange · 27/09/2024 16:59

kirbykirby · 27/09/2024 16:38

Surely protesting outside the Chinese embassy a country which continues to build coal-powered fire stations and produces far more pollution than anything the UK produces would make people think these protestors are serious and not just privileged, attention seeking, middle class girls trying to be edgy.

That'd get ignored.

The only thing that doesn't get ignored is doing something annoying or novel.

The outrage amongst Mail readers is better than it not appearing at all, in terms of publicity for the issue.

They were both under the terms of suspended sentences for other protests
THAT is why they got jailed.

This wasn't a road blockage, it most definitely was not violent protest.

OonaStubbs · 27/09/2024 17:03

What they do brings attention to their cause but it is negative attention. They aren't doing anything productive at all.

bergamotorange · 27/09/2024 17:06

MeltedMind · 27/09/2024 16:47

Yes it’s all just very ‘rich kids and old hippies attention seeking through vandalism’ isn’t it. They could do so much and bring awareness and change but they are so deep down in the hole of arrogant destruction

They really can't bring about change when so many people are in total denial about the issue. As for awareness - there's no amount of awareness-raising that can cut through denial.

The electorate as a whole don't (yet?) consider it a priority.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/09/2024 17:06

No, one of them got an Extra 3 months for taking part in the slow march (holding up traffic) but got 2 years for soup

Cornercandy · 27/09/2024 17:08

These JSO idiots are embarrassing. I remember a photo on SM where a man in a JSO was on plane. If you are against oil, don't fly.

OonaStubbs · 27/09/2024 17:03

But only a fool would be less concerned about climate change because of their stunts.

That's the issue for the protesters. They can be worthy and ignored, or annoying and castigated. Because people don't (yet?) want to engage with climate change as an issue.

People want them to do something 'positive' - what?

GoadyMcBigot · 27/09/2024 17:10

You’be started a thread about it. So their plan worked.

amd they don’t want to be liked or popular. They are highlighting the calamity of man made climate change.

so moan about them all you like but they are just drawing attention to something that is already impacting us all.

And for the right-wing climate change deniers, just remember that the worse climate change gets, the more immigrants there will be. So better start working on climate change quick before we’re overrun by these pesky forriners.

Yeah, and now I'm going for a 50 mile trip in my gaz guzzling 5litre mum truck because they piss me off...

And I could rip up the Mona Lisa and not be prosecuted because it’s non violent? Nuts.

Begsthequestion · 27/09/2024 16:24

What other ways do you suggest, op?

Something linked to oil.

I assume Van Gogh is an oil painting? But are they protesting oil paint?

Phoebe Plummer (the one with the pink hair)

Phoebe Plummer grew up in her family's £4million Chelsea mansion and went to £45,000-a-year private school in Ascot..

Imagine what someone could do with those finances behind them?

OonaStubbs · 27/09/2024 17:20

Why don't they work inventing and developing new power sources that are eco friendly.
