Tesco- salted butter, own brand- £3. Which is £12 a kilo!

I was in Tesco recently and they had POLICE warnings in the butter aisle to stop five finger discounts, probably .

WHY is butter so savagely expensive?

Bjorkdidit · 28/09/2024 04:06

Butter is available in just about any normal supermarket for less than £2, including M&S. It would be quite rare to have to pay £3 a block.

I was in a Tesco recently and every single bottle in the spirits aisle was encased in a security bag.

The "wage inflation, duh" argument could only possibly be valid if supermarket staff, hauliers, factory workers and food producers all had massive pay rises. And we know they didn't.

What PP and her cleaner earn has no effect on grocery prices.

That’s more expensive than Sainsbury which is £8.40 for a litre as opposed to £7.99 for 750ml.

Both are insane prices though . I’ve gone back to Sainsbury as with Aldi match and Aldi fruit/ veg not lasting Sainsbury now seems similar in price.

Yes stuff has gone up. But a hell of a lot of wages have too.5 years ago my cleaner charged £11 an hour.... now she charged £17. 5 years ago I earned £95k now I earn £150k.

Wage inflation goes hand in hand with rising prices. I don't really get why people are surprised.

I wish my pension has gone up as much!

Garlictest · 28/09/2024 06:03

Aldi fruit/ veg not lasting - Good lord, I avoid buying fruit there because it never ripens 😂 Yesterday I ate an apple that's been in the fridge for two months, it was just ready to eat!

On the plus side, my crispy salad that I opened four days ago and is three days out of date is still fresh. Your Aldi can't be getting its produce from Immortal Farms like mine.

VeraYin · 28/09/2024 06:14

I work in the private sector with virtually no pay rise in five years.

Butter is very expensive, just buy something cheaper.

C0lintgeCaterpillar · 28/09/2024 06:25

Complaints about Aldi fruit/veg going off are common. Apparantly they have less deliveries and don’t refrigerate as much.

They need to sort it as there is no point buying cheaper produce if you end up having to throw it away.

Big Toblerone £7.50 in the Co-Op. £4.50 in Asda. Makes Waitrose look cheap at times.

That's airport price! 😮

In Co op- chicken for a treat for the dogs- £9.99! That’s a no from me!

My dog gets the ten slices for £1 chicken from Co-op to help with his regular medication and he is completely delighted with it.

Olive oil costs are skyrocketing due to global warming, I read somewhere recently. ☹️

We go mostly to Lidl and swear by their fruit & veg, definitely lasts better than from Tesco!

HRTQueen · 28/09/2024 07:02

i bought olive oil from Lidl the other day it was £5.50 (or around that) I am sure earlier this year about £4.50 used to be £3.90 ish

do Lidl prices vary

I buy bin bags at the local sells everything shop they are £1.99 and better than all the supermarkets.

In our Co-op all of the spirits are in dummy bottles and you have to ask them to bring one out for you when you get to the till! And all the cheese/meat (even sausages)/butter/baby formula are in security cases. A few weeks ago they were ram raided for the cash machine and they’ve said they won’t be replacing it. And this is in a “naice” area of the UK in an affluent village.

It’s actually really sad, people must be so desperate

mitogoshigg · 28/09/2024 07:09

Pukka teabags were £3 a box but regularly 2 for £4 until under 2 years ago, now they are £5 a box and rarely a promo

ObsidianTree · 28/09/2024 07:15

Yorkshire teabags. Can't remember how much exactly but about £12-£15 for a bag of 600. Tetley does the bags for about £6.50 ish, but their teabags now are as strong as dirty dishwater. Have started buying red label Aldi or liidl teabags. Surprisingly a decent strong cuppa.

I commented to someone on exactly this the other day! A couple of years ago a block of own-brand butter was £1.50 at most. £3 is a ridiculous price.

What butter are you all buying?

@PeggyMitchellsCameo An American firm now own Cadburys and they changed the recipe for dairy milk. There was a flurry in the press about it at the time, possible your beloved treat has changed recipe as well.

So your cleaners wage has risen by £6 an hour over last 5 years but yours has risen by over £25 per hour over last 5 years. Yet you cannot see how this difference impacts those on the lower earning scale when prices have risen so much?

Bjorkdidit · 28/09/2024 08:13

It's the MN way. Buy the most expensive thing they can find in the most expensive shop available then complain that 'life is expensive' and 'their money doesn't go very far'.

Santina · 28/09/2024 08:16

We have a place in the South of France, a cauliflower in the supermarket there is €5. I was gobsmacked the first time I saw it this year, it does fluctuate strangely. Sometimes it's cheaper, not very often though.

That's about £4.18?! I thought the cauliflowers priced at £3.99 in the corner shop near me were a piss take but you've trumped that!

The “5p” bag charge is now 30p

They were always going to make profit on this over time. As soon as a charge gets put on anything it quickly rises.

I took a trip to the US last year and it felt strange being able to help yourself to carrier bags, like going back in time!

The prices I really noticed lately are toothpaste, oil and chocolate. I’m almost at a point of giving up on chocolate because the bars are so tiny these days. I’d rather pay more and have an occasional treat for a traditional sized bar.
