5 years ago I earned £95k now I earn £150k.

Wage inflation goes hand in hand with rising prices. I don't really get why people are surprised.

Pistachio nuts £7.50 Tesco

Luio · 27/09/2024 06:43

Toothpaste. It is basically a luxury item now.

auroraborearlarse · 27/09/2024 07:09

For anyone who likes Heinz soup but are put off by the extortionate price - some of the Aldi soups are definitely made by Heinz and are only 67p, but they only do a limited range (tomato, vegetable, chicken or mushroom)

justasking111 · 27/09/2024 07:43

The Asda tomato soup is identical to Heinz at only 90p. Was 70p last autumn.

Bjorkdidit · 27/09/2024 08:07

Just about all these examples are avoidable. I know prices have gone up but there are far cheaper alternatives than the most expensive items available from one of the most expensive supermarkets.

We get our bin bags from Costco. Every so often their roll of 100 excellent quality and large bin bags is on offer and we only have to buy them every 2-3 years or more.

Even if you don't use Costco, you can do a lot better than the Co-op, or Tesco Metro etc, which is there for the situation where you need bin bags (or butter etc) now and you can only get to the nearest shop so of course you're going to pay a lot. If you are rarely or never in this position, the prices don't affect you.

That might be true for non-public sector... For the rest of us, not so much...

100%. NHS and no change.

Yes stuff has gone up. But a hell of a lot of wages have too.5 years ago my cleaner charged £11 an hour.... now she charged £17. 5 years ago I earned £95k now I earn £150k.

Yes. What is also surprising is that in this day and age some people have no idea of the reality of other people's lives. You sound like that man on Question Time who earnt £80k and thought that was average across the UK. I'm guessing you were trying to wind people up, but you love in an absolute bubble.

Bin bags in the big four grocery shops are either a complete rip off, or really flimsy!

These from home bargains are really good, they are strong and only cost £1.50

Anyone else now humming the Men in Black theme?
"half price black bin bags, on offer 'til December, half price black bin bags, they're black and long and slender"

GreekIslandsMap · 27/09/2024 08:53

Nescafe coffee in a jar, I have seen it for £10 per jar !

However, it is £5 in B&M

M&S baked beans are great and cost about 50p a tin.

I have come to terms with olive oil being the same price as a bottle of wine with the reasoning that the bottle of wine will only last a couple of days but the oil will last for ages. I acknowledge this is very first world, privileged reasoning.

Where is this magic wine that lasts for “days”??? I need some as mine only lasts about 2-3 hours…….

Not everyday food, but was surprised to see £36 single Durian fruit being sold in Costco. Apparently can smell fowl, so no wonder they were well wrapped.

Tesco- salted butter, own brand- £3. Which is £12 a kilo!

Only £1.60 here...

Livinginaclock · 27/09/2024 09:41

Durian smells absolutely disgusting and doesn't taste much better

LookItsMeAgain · 27/09/2024 11:16

€8 for a can of deodorant - £6.66 - if I'm a club card holder, I can get it for €4 (£3.33).

I think a lot of the club card prices are the way they are so that the supermarket can run trend analysis on their customers. I just wish if they can afford to sell it at €4 for club card holders, that they just drop the price/keep the price at €4 all the time. It's ridiculous.

Technonan · 27/09/2024 11:34

FWIW, I line my bin with newspaper. It absorbs any moisture or oil and slides out neatly when I empty the bin. It's also biodegradable and costs nothing (I mostly use Metros, but I do buy a print newspaper occasionally, and that gives me plenty.)

DonnaSummet · 27/09/2024 11:42

Alpen £7.50 in our corner shop.
Ran home to eat unbranded Coco Pops.

Comedycook · 27/09/2024 12:42

Some of these prices are terrifying. If ordinary household items like coffee, kitchen roll, chocolate spread, cereal are £5-10 per item...a £100 quid food shop could consist of between 10-20 items. Scary stuff.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 27/09/2024 12:47

@Comedycook the random super-high prices makes me think the supermarkets are trying it on and profiteering, not just "oh labour and raw materials cost."

JC03745 · 27/09/2024 14:48

EdgeOfSixty · 26/09/2024 23:44

Tesco salted butter is £1.69 online.
Did you go into a Tesco Metro? I think they charge higher prices 8n small stores.

@hookiewookie29 It wasn't a tiny, express store, but a a reasonably sized, high street one. It was between zone 1-2 in London though, so may well have been a Metro store and charging more than the regular ones.
