Do Europeans hate the Brits?

1000 replies

Floofydawg · 24/09/2024 15:31

We're in Spain at the minute and have encountered some pretty hostile behaviour. Not so much from the Spanish, as we speak the language, but from other Europeans. We've been coming here many years and I've never before encountered such hostility. It got me thinking, do many Europeans dislike the Brits?

OP posts:

All the Welsh, Scottish and Irish posters saying they're treated so much better once it's realised you they English. You do realise how transparent and childish that sounds?! 😂

Do you realise how opaque and silly you sound??!

Is English your mother tongue btw?

Somanypiessolittletime · 25/09/2024 20:50

CherryValley5 · 25/09/2024 20:43

Which as many, many posters followed up to agree with me on would be a correct statement. I’m not saying it is right or wrong, I simply gave my personal experience and they gave theirs. There’s a thread about this every few months on MN and it always goes the same way.

Somanypiessolittletime · Today 20:47

Did they though? I think most of the non-English posters have been climbing over themselves to say they've not seen any hostility against the English just some sort of "extra warmth" towards the Scots or Irish. Not you though. You said we were hated. I'd agree it seems likely that YOU hate the English, I'm not sure that most of Europe do. I certainly hope not and haven't ever got that impression when I've been in other European countries.

Sorry to post then same thing twice. Realised I forgot to quote what I was actually answering before.

Danielle9891 · 25/09/2024 20:50

I've travelled quite a lot and you'll find people all over the world that don't like the English. I now live in Northern Ireland but I've backpacked around Australia, New Zealand, North and South America and Europe. I'm English but find people believe we think we're better than others, we all don't tip (they're right), we don't even try to communicate in other people's language (imagine if someone came to a shop in England and just spoke french and expected the cashier to know what they are saying) and we don't respect other people's customs or beliefs. I've read English people leaving reviews on TripAdvisor of holiday destinations and complaining that people 'only spoke spanish' or 'didn't serve a full English' in Spain. 🫣

I work in a hotel bar in a small village in Northern Ireland and we get loads of tourists from all over and I'm surprise at how many English people will ask why our village has the Irish flag while the next village has the union jack. Ask about Bloody Sunday in Derry/Londonderry, the famine ect. Some people are just oblivious to all the hurt we've caused over the years and know only the good part of history not the bad.

I've been to Spain 3 times this year and haven't encountered any rudeness from anyone.

NOBODY said there was "rudeness".... sighs

Treesinmygarden · 25/09/2024 20:51

genesis92 · 25/09/2024 19:57

I’m sorry that my personal experiences offend you so much. Personally, I believe it is because us Scots and Irish are friendlier and chattier in general, people do tend to gravitate towards that. Tourists comment on it a lot and even my own English family members agree. Of course this is generalised and there are exceptions. Try being nicer maybe? 😬

Nicer? You're the one dominating this whole thread by being racist against the English. The chip on your shoulder sure is heavy

Not half as heavy as yours... equally balanced actually, chips on both shoulders!

Goldenbear · 25/09/2024 20:51

CherryValley5 · 25/09/2024 20:47

Do you genuinely struggle to understand the concept that some nations are simply friendlier and better craic, for want of a better description, than others? It’s not about hugs from European strangers or other odd displays of affection, don’t be ridiculous.

Edited

I think you don't appreciate the diversity of the English so your pre-conceptions are really dated. Do you not think heritage influences they way many English people behave. In Northern Ireland isn't it something like 97 % identify as white British and it is not much lower for Scotland so maybe you are projecting your ideas on to the English population that includes a huge population and is significantly more diverse.

Got to say, you don't come across as someone who's particularly friendly or a good craic.

I’m very friendly and good craic to people who aren’t blatantly ignorant.

I think the OP saying people were being hostile to her is rudeness ........ 🙄. I didn't encounter any hostility either if that makes you feel better ....... sighs.

Your prejudice is really obvious here. Sad person. Don't the Europeans think you're the IRA? Not nice is it?

Wow, just wow! That's a whole new low blow!

I'm from a similar background to Cherryvalley5, so a person would have to be spectacularly stupid to think that...

angeldelite · 25/09/2024 20:59

As an Asian person on holiday, it’s always the Brits (don’t know if they’re English, Scottish, Irish or Welsh) and Germans staring at the brown people on the beach, Spaniards are blasé.

Well bully for you - I guess England didn't suffer the way NI did in the Troubles.

I think we're doing just fucking amazing compared to when I was younger!

Sweeping generalisations galore there. It was the British aristocrats and royalty that caused the family yet it is always the English fault?

Pelicanbriefcase · 25/09/2024 21:02

Pearlgemspark · 24/09/2024 15:56

That's ridiculous.

People speak English in lots of different countries. My Australian friend speaks English. No one ever thinks that he is British.

It’s not ridiculous, it’s completely true and I’ve been experiencing it firsthand my entire life! You’ll have plenty Irish here will tell you the same.

Boatsandcoats · 25/09/2024 21:03

We chose not to go to Spain (We chose Turkey instead) on holiday this summer because of all the anti British demonstrations. It has been made very clear that the British are not welcome and have been actually told to leave because they arennot welcome. It's always worth doing a little research before going on holiday @Floofydawg

Who said anything about having to exchange money? As others have said, the reality is that most people in England have never seen a Scottish bank note unless they've visited Scotland. Possibly not even there, given the increasing preponderance of credit cards. So shop assistants outside England are simply not familiar with Scottish notes and for that reason are reluctant to accept them. Nothing to do with a lack of respect.

And many of these shop assistants aren't English at all, if that matters to you.

Well NI shops manage to accept Scottish bank notes and vice versa?

Kiuyni · 25/09/2024 21:05

Is this thread just lots of Irish, Scottish and Welsh people saying that Europeans hate the English?

I live in France and the French near me couldn't distinguish between the accents and really don't care or understand the difference.

No it's Irish, Scottish and Welsh people saying they get greeted warmly in Europe and English people thinking that means they are hated.

97%?
Was that a typo?

In 2021 42.8% of people in Northern Ireland identified as British (alone or with other national identities).

I agree that some education on legal tender would not go 'a miss'.

Perhaps we could start with the fact that Scottish banknotes are not legal tender anywhere, including in Scotland.

Eh???

HollyKnight · 25/09/2024 21:10

Treesinmygarden · 25/09/2024 21:08

Eh???

Ignore it. She doesn't know the difference between legal currency and legal tender.

Cheques and credit cards are also not legal tender, but they are still acceptable ways to buy things.

OhMaria2 · 25/09/2024 21:10

I've been treated nicely by everyone that I've met everywhere I've been in Europe.

Oh well, English people are not hated, they are excellent tourists and spend a lot of money here. Americans...that's another story
