Do Europeans hate the Brits?

1000 replies

Floofydawg · 24/09/2024 15:31

We're in Spain at the minute and have encountered some pretty hostile behaviour. Not so much from the Spanish, as we speak the language, but from other Europeans. We've been coming here many years and I've never before encountered such hostility. It got me thinking, do many Europeans dislike the Brits?

Ive never had an issue with anywhere in Scotland accepting NI bank notes. It’s solely in England where they get a horrified look by shop assistants.. Maybe some basic education on legal tender wouldn’t go a miss - especially in large, UK wide chains?

I agree that some education on legal tender would not go 'a miss'.

Perhaps we could start with the fact that Scottish banknotes are not legal tender anywhere, including in Scotland.

Goldenbear · 25/09/2024 20:30

HollyKnight · 25/09/2024 20:24

Why should a shop employee in the UK know what Scottish notes should look like? Really?

And English people wonder why many Scots don't like them.

Scotland and NI are fine with each other. There is plenty of back and forth there. They are not as insular about the rest of the UK

Do they, I don't think many English people do.

Is it surprising if you have never seen a Scottish note you might be reluctant to accept just in case you get in trouble? It is a written warning in some cases if you accept wrong notes. You can't blame them.

Goldenbear · 25/09/2024 18:55

Yes many Irish posters 😆 still doesn't mean it is 'a thing'.

And you sneering that it's not "a thing", doesn't mean it's not??

Do you think that we're all lying? 🙄

HollyKnight · 25/09/2024 20:32

IcedPurple · 25/09/2024 20:26

Again, why are you talking about 'English people'? I thought you said you didn't care about whether this imaginary shop assistant is English or not? Make up your mind!

Would it be OK if a shop assistant in Swansea or Belfast refused your precious Scottish banknote?

You're the one who said about them not being English. I assumed you meant this shop was in England seeing as that was the topic of discussion.

People in NI and Scotland are aware of each other's money. I've no idea about Wales, but if they don't recognise Scottish notes then they need to educate themselves too.

If as the previous poster said they aren't legal tender I can see why they don't get accepted. Love how you have turned this into the English are stupid etc.

Yes, @Goldenbear half of this thread must be lying just to annoy you. That or we’ve all simply had common and valid experiences that you struggle to believe.

Goldenbear · 25/09/2024 20:30

Do they, I don't think many English people do.

It comes up every few months. Definitely every time there is a football match.

"Does Scotland really hate England?"

Then the thread fills with English people being shocked, butthurt and telling Scottish people they are wrong.

Just got back from Gran Canaria and experienced no hostility whatsoever from any other nationality staying in our hotel or out and about

NOBODY IS SAYING THERE IS HOSTILITY!! How many times does this need to be said?!!

I love how you are turning this into a competitive hatred of the UK nations thread. How delightful!

Would it be acceptable on this site to say that my attitude changes when I encounter an Irish accent and not in a good way? Didn't think so!

It wouldn’t bother me.

I think @CherryValley5 you did that with the first post on the thread after the OP! Poster asked if the Brits are hated in Europe. You said - only the English.

That me alone struggles to believe, what about the other posters of which there are many that are staying the same thing and are calling you out for your anti English sentiment? It is so far fetched and absurd, I don't agree with you - get over it!

Treesinmygarden · 25/09/2024 20:42

MeowToffee · 25/09/2024 19:36

Why are you telling me this? There is mythology all around the world, and a lot of it is much better known than Celtic mythology. Roman and Greek mythology, too. There is a certain romanticism around the Celts, though. Not really based in anything - people who say they like Celtic myths aren't actually talking about the Cu Chulainn sagas cause they have no clue.

Anyway, seems like people in this thread overwhelmingly share my experience: that Scottish and Irish are generally received with additional warmth by people around the continent (and the US). What I would argue with is that this has anything to do with anti-English sentiment. I've been together with my Scottish husband for 25 years. He has lived in continental Europe with me for 20 of those years. I've seen it happen time and again. And I don't get the same warm welcome he does, despite not being English. I think I'm one of the only ones here who has provided that perspective.

Well said!

Some English posters here have rushed to take offence where there is none!

Nobody is saying there is anti-English sentiments. They just seem to warm more to Irish or Scottish, don't know so much about Welsh!

Which as many, many posters followed up to agree with me on would be a correct statement. I’m not saying it is right or wrong, I simply gave my personal experience and they gave theirs. There’s a thread about this every few months on MN and it always goes the same way.

I suggest you stop being so rude?

Do you have anything useful to contribute or are you just on the attac?

Sorry but what is being said, it is so wooly a concept I'm trying to understand what you and others actually mean. Do so far the warmth for the Celts is evident due to the following;

  • hugs from European strangers
  • Irish number plates
  • the love of Guinness
  • something about myths being brought up in these interactions.

What are the signs of this affection again, have I missed anything?

Treesinmygarden · 25/09/2024 20:47

Somanypiessolittletime · 25/09/2024 19:49

Well it might be ignorant but it ISN'T a lack of respect, although if you're wanting to see it that way feel free. The truth is we just don't really come across Scottish notes hardly ever down south. We just don't. I'm 44 years old and I used to work in a shop in my teens for 3 or 4 years. I can honestly say that in London I've probably seen a Scottish note 2 or 3 times ever. That's just a fact.

That's probably because it's well known that England won't accept Scottish or N Irish notes, so we troop off to the bank to get English notes before we go!

Do you genuinely struggle to understand the concept that some nations are simply friendlier and better craic, for want of a better description, than others? It’s not about hugs from European strangers or other odd displays of affection, don’t be ridiculous.

Somanypiessolittletime · 25/09/2024 20:47

Did they though? I think most of the non-English posters have been climbing over themselves to say they've not seen any hostility against the English just some sort of "extra warmth" towards the Scots or Irish. Not you though. You said we were hated. I'd agree it seems likely that YOU hate the English, I'm not sure that most of Europe do. I certainly hope not and haven't ever got that impression when I've been in other European countries.

You are not saying if it is right or wrong, a bit of advice, you are kind of demonstrating that you absolutely think it is great!
