Do Europeans hate the Brits?

1000 replies

Floofydawg · 24/09/2024 15:31

We're in Spain at the minute and have encountered some pretty hostile behaviour. Not so much from the Spanish, as we speak the language, but from other Europeans. We've been coming here many years and I've never before encountered such hostility. It got me thinking, do many Europeans dislike the Brits?

OP posts:
usernother · 25/09/2024 19:53

I've been to Spain 3 times this year and haven't encountered any rudeness from anyone.

CherryValley5 · 25/09/2024 19:44

Why are you so incredibly bitter over this?

It's called sarcasm as it's quite ridiculous a notion that is really about your feelings on the 'English as you perceive them to be!

HollyKnight · 25/09/2024 19:55

Somanypiessolittletime · 25/09/2024 19:49

Well it might be ignorant but it ISN'T a lack of respect, although if you're wanting to see it that way feel free. The truth is we just don't really come across Scottish notes hardly ever down south. We just don't. I'm 44 years old and I used to work in a shop in my teens for 3 or 4 years. I can honestly say that in London I've probably seen a Scottish note 2 or 3 times ever. That's just a fact.

Are English people "down south" really so stupid that they think they need to exchange their money if they want to visit another country in the UK? Of course it is disrespectful to treat Scottish money like it is foreign currency.

genesis92 · 25/09/2024 19:57

I’m sorry that my personal experiences offend you so much. Personally, I believe it is because us Scots and Irish are friendlier and chattier in general, people do tend to gravitate towards that. Tourists comment on it a lot and even my own English family members agree. Of course this is generalised and there are exceptions. Try being nicer maybe? 😬

Nicer? You're the one dominating this whole thread by being racist against the English. The chip on your shoulder sure is heavy

Somanypiessolittletime · 25/09/2024 20:04

Of course nobody thinks they have to change their money. But if they don't recognise what a Scottish note looks like then unsurprisingly they might be hesitant to accept it. Apparently Maundy Money is also legal tender across the whole of the UK but again if you've never seen it before you'd be unlikely to recognise it.
I'm bored of being told we're "stupid" and "hated" by xenophobic people who are apparently loved the world over for their superior friendliness and charm. Luckily the people from the other UK nations that I know IRL are a lot less hostile.

IVFmumoftwo · 25/09/2024 20:05

It is a bit much to accuse someone of being bitter but you are barking back to events from years and even centuries ago. In the same way not every Irish is chatty neither is every English reserved.

What a stupid question. No we are not. However it is the perogative of the businesses in England if they want to accept it or not.

moomoo1967 · 25/09/2024 20:08

Goldenbear · 25/09/2024 19:39

Yes that maybe so but if you were from a Celtic nation maybe your treatment would have been amazing, they may have even hugged you just for existing 🙄

I never said our experience wasn't amazing you only mentioned hostility

FailureAndSuicide · 25/09/2024 20:09

CherryValley5 · 24/09/2024 15:42

More specifically the English, I’m afraid. When they hear the accent and discover that our family is Irish we instantly get better, friendlier service in many restaurants, shops etc.

Your prejudice is really obvious here. Sad person. Don't the Europeans think you're the IRA? Not nice is it?

I’m talking about real life events in which millions died. On the other hand, the poster in question is getting their knickers in a twist as people are suggesting that she may not get quite as friendly a reception abroad as people from other parts of the UK. There’s a rather large difference.

Who said anything about having to exchange money? As others have said, the reality is that most people in England have never seen a Scottish bank note unless they've visited Scotland. Possibly not even there, given the increasing preponderance of credit cards. So shop assistants outside England are simply not familiar with Scottish notes and for that reason are reluctant to accept them. Nothing to do with a lack of respect.

And many of these shop assistants aren't English at all, if that matters to you.

I don't care if they are English or not. If they are in the business of selling they should know what money looks like. It is ignorant and disrespectful to only know about one area of the UK. And if they only want to sell to people in England, then there is a name for that too.

Well.. I hate to break this to you but considering I’m from NI, hold a British passport and have a Protestant background that would be a rather difficult assumption, even from the most uneducated.

Real life events from nearly two hundred years ago that no English individual alive is responsible for yet you hold grudges against. Funny how you aren't anti Scottish considering the shit show that was the Plantation of Ulster. Funny that.

Somanypiessolittletime · 25/09/2024 20:16

Ok @HollyKnight as I said Maundy Money is legal tender too. Do you know what that looks like to be ready to accept it? No? How ignorant and disrespectful of you.

HollyKnight · 25/09/2024 20:17

@Somanypiessolittletime I don't work in a shop.

What a massive overreaction! Why should a minimum wage employee know about a banknote they'll probably never see in their lives?

And you say you don't care if the hypothetical shop assistant is English or not, then you talk about 'only selling to people in England'? Huh?

I'm willing to bet that if I went into a shop in Dundee with an NI note, there's a good chance the shop assistant would be reluctant to accept it. Would you get all outraged about that too?

Why should a shop employee in the UK know what Scottish notes should look like? Really?

And English people wonder why many Scots don't like them.

Scotland and NI are fine with each other. There is plenty of back and forth there. They are not as insular about the rest of the UK

Treesinmygarden · 25/09/2024 20:25

IVFmumoftwo · 25/09/2024 18:18

I would say being cooler with someone because of where they come from is hostile even if very covert and fairly discreet although the examples don't sound discreet. It is very stupid anyway as many English people hate drinking holidays and want culture.

"Hostile" is a complete overreaction. Have you experienced "hostility"? If you have it may be nothing to do with your nationality?

Ive never had an issue with anywhere in Scotland accepting NI bank notes. It’s solely in England where they get a horrified look by shop assistants.. Maybe some basic education on legal tender wouldn’t go a miss - especially in large, UK wide chains?

Again, why are you talking about 'English people'? I thought you said you didn't care about whether this imaginary shop assistant is English or not? Make up your mind!

Would it be OK if a shop assistant in Swansea or Belfast refused your precious Scottish banknote?

If you are referring to me, I think like many others on this thread you are chatting rubbish and it is imagined and is confirmation bias. I've stated many times that people in continental Europe have assumed that I am Scandinavian even speaking to me in English to ask this as English is so commonly used to communicate a across the world, I do have fairly recent Scandinavian heritage so it is not a great shocker if they are assuming certain things about how the Scandinavian's look. So if I'm not getting quite as friendly reception abroad it has nothing to do with looking English as the times this has come up I'm never asked if English. Therefore, your hypothesis is wrong!

The Spanish were lovely when we went last October. Where did you go? We went to Seville and Grenada. Everyone was nice

I've been to Valencia, Madrid, Seville, Estepona and many other locations in Spain and the Spanish have always been lovely!

Some Scots hate the English for everything. They don't need an excuse. Nothing to do with the English. Looks like you are one of them.
