Do Europeans hate the Brits?

1000 replies

Floofydawg · 24/09/2024 15:31

We're in Spain at the minute and have encountered some pretty hostile behaviour. Not so much from the Spanish, as we speak the language, but from other Europeans. We've been coming here many years and I've never before encountered such hostility. It got me thinking, do many Europeans dislike the Brits?

People judge very much on looks before anything else so if you have to make the point that you are Scottish or Welsh they obviously just think you look British, maybe they are making a song and dance over it as they think they have offended you say then go into overkill with the flattery, "oh the Braveheart, oh the kilts" etc."

Sorry you are obviously British but evidently don't want to be seen to be.

It is funny it wouldn't occur to me to go along with the, 'oh your Danish', have distant family but no I'm British, does it matter!

Ah, my apologies! I feel a bit silly now, haha. This thread is moving so fast that I lost track of who's posting. Now that I know it's a joke, I love it! :-)

😁, my married surname is Irish so get asked if Scandinavian but I'll wave around my bankcard hoping for elevated service now on the back of this thread 😆

Roseshavethorns · 25/09/2024 09:32

I'm Scottish. I do find that attitudes change when, if I'm asked if I'm English, I say that I'm from Scotland.
I have never been treated negatively if people think I am English but definitely am treated better when they find out I am Scottish. Whether that's because the Scots are popular in general or because many people have Scottish ancestry I couldn't say.

How are you treated better? If you’d said English they may have treated you the same way. How were they treating you when they didn’t know?

😆Or you could attach Irish number plates to your car and everyone will instantly recognise them and will adore you and want to cuddle you. 😆

I'm English and I've had similar interactions abroad more times than I could possibly count.

"Hello, where are you from, are you English?"

"Yes, I live in Manchester."

"Ah, fantastic, Man Utd! I saw them play once! I've never been to Manchester but I have a cousin who lives in Liverpool. How are you finding [name of resort]? We have better weather than the north of England, don't we, haha!"

Absolutely astonishing that you seem to think this kind of thing only happens to Irish or Scottish people.

I think it’s bc it’s the lazy trope of everyone hates the English bc of fucking history that nobody alive has had anything to do with - MOVE ON FFS!

The classic “I’ll support any football team BUT England hahahahaha!!!” is even featured in tv and film 🙄

Have you seen the behaviour of England fans? At away matches they’re a national embarrassment! Dignity and respect goes out the window. I wouldn’t want to be in any way associated with supporting that.

goodluckbinbin · 25/09/2024 13:12

Lots of English posters here demonstrating beautifully why they may not be anyone’s favourite nation!

Disturbia81 · 25/09/2024 13:12

Yes it's because of the football fans and all the rough ones who go on holidays, it's awful thinking some will assume we all behave like that.
So many English football fans are neanderthals when they get together, it's fucking embarrassing.

Slidesclipsandbobbins · 25/09/2024 13:12

Oops sorry @Goldenbear, missed that too. I've little idea of who posted what at this stage.

I agree that some England fans behave awfully, but England is hardly the only country in the world with loutish football fans.

You do realise that there are many badly behaved fans from many countries and since when did a football team represent the values of the whole country!

I have seen the behaviour of England fans and read accounts of other fans who have brought shame upon their home countries- Russian fans are meant to even worse for example. But tarring all English tourists with the same brush as these dickheads is like blaming whole countries for the policies of their governments. Are ALL Russians cunts bc their leader and football fans are?

It’s classic bigoted behaviour to form prejudice against the whole country’s population based on one small element of it

English fans used to have a very well deserved reputation for violence, and although incidents still happen, it's much less bad than it used to be. The English authorities have really cracked down on bad behaviour at football stadia, but the same cannot be said for several other European countries. Blatant racism is still tolerated among football fans in parts of Eastern Europe for example.

Well, I’m not the one tarring said English tourists so what would I know..! Personally I wouldn’t get offended over people of different nationalities not wanting to support my football team (in fact I don’t have one as I really couldn’t care less!) but you do you.

SiobhanSharpe · 25/09/2024 13:23

We've only experienced this once, sort of. Quite a few years ago DH was in Arromanches, Normandy, with his now-late DF who had taken part in the D-day landings. In a bookshop he asked for a specific book on the landings is his (basic) French, and the owners/assistants were very offhand indeed and brought him a copy in German.
He was quite taken aback. When he said no, he was English, not German their attitude changed entirely, they became friendly and welcoming, almost apologetic.

So perhaps it's not just the Brits who can get short shrift in Europe.

Theoriginalmrscillianmurphy · 25/09/2024 13:26

@Pearlgemspark not a nasty post at all, it's true. I'm also from Ireland and we are welcomed everywhere.

Op, my sister has a pub in Tenerife, English are a nightmare.

That's really interesting to hear, and my mum had a very similar experience. She lived in France for a while as a young woman, at a time when memories of the German occupation were still pretty raw and not massively long in the past. Her appearance led French people to think that she might be German, and they were considerably friendlier and less hostile to her on learning that she was actually English.

England and the English is a very culturally diverse country, the population of London is almost double the size of the whole of the ROI, it is a bit of nonsense to use these hackenyed stereotypes of the arrogant English when many of us have diverse heritages, I am English although I'd always say British but have Scandinavian family heritage that came here in the last century and my DH is of a certain ethnicity but has an Irish surname, he's never been to Ireland.

Many posters are just finding it quite bizarre the conclusions drawn about minor, inane interactions on holiday and are casting doubt on it being about you being Irish, Scottish or Welsh or from Jersey etc.

Theoriginalmrscillianmurphy · 25/09/2024 13:27

@Sunraysunday you what 🤣🤣
