Gisele Pelicot

Hi I didn't see a recent thread on this.

Is anyone following the trial in the Gisele Pelicot case.

Obviously the whole thing is awful.

Now the men who raped her are on the witness stand.

One thing that one of the men said really struck me.

He said (this isn't word for word, but it was along these lines) "I hope men in the future see a woman as a person, and not just something that is owned by her husband."

Is that how some men see us now, as just things owned by their husbands?

The whole case is disgusting.

Pelicot has been charged with murder? Where did you see this?

It is all over the press. He has denied it but was charged in 2022.

Charged with the 1991 murder of Sophie Narme, an estate agent. <a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230927215841/www.rtl.fr/actu/justice-faits-divers/meurtre-sophie-narme-une-enigme-de-32-ans-bientot-resolue-7900226486" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://web.archive.org/web/20230927215841/www.rtl.fr/actu/justice-faits-divers/meurtre-sophie-narme-une-enigme-de-32-ans-bientot-resolue-7900226486

He's also admitted to the attempted rape of Estella B (another estate agent) in Villeparisis in 1999, after they repeated the DNA test that they didn't follow up in 2010.

The method seems to have been the same in both cases, attacking while being shown a property.

Sorry, web link seems to have gone wrong. Trying again. <a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230927215841/www.rtl.fr/actu/justice-faits-divers/meurtre-sophie-narme-une-enigme-de-32-ans-bientot-resolue-7900226486" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://web.archive.org/web/20230927215841/www.rtl.fr/actu/justice-faits-divers/meurtre-sophie-narme-une-enigme-de-32-ans-bientot-resolue-7900226486

[Edit: no, looks fine in the preview, posts as gibberish. Can't seem to fix it.]

"Gisele had also visited her doctor regarding several gynecological issues, and the issues had been dismissed as age related."

Maybe the doctor was one of the rapists.

DancingLions · 24/09/2024 16:35

It's horrific but I am utterly in awe of her courage and dignity. I just cannot begin to imagine what she's been through and is still going through. She is so brave.

I hope that every single man who did this to her goes to prison for a long time. I'm only sorry her husband is of an age where he probably won't live long enough for the full sentence, but at least he will die in prison.

It just sickens me that so many men took part and the tiny amount that didn't (I think 3) didn't do a thing about it. It's frightening.

Yumyi · 24/09/2024 16:47

it beggars belief. Apart from the awful nature of the crime. I am completely astounded by the brazen nature of it all. The men allowed it to be videoed so did it not occur to them how easily they could be found guilty. I guess maybe they really didn’t think they were doing anything wrong? Seems like a very stupid thing to do they obviously thought they couldnt be found and arrested.

Saw that as well. What a piece of shit that female defence lawyer is Angry

Is she representative of French lawyers?
Or is it that no sensible lawyer would want to defend these men for fear of the hit to their reputation?

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 24/09/2024 17:35

France is a very catholic country and the catholic church does not exactly have a great track record on seeing women in a positive light.

Honeytutu · 24/09/2024 17:41

@BlackShuck3

I'm not sure if they have a taxi rank system in France as they do in the UK . If so then the barrister had no choice but to defend the defendant.

That is , the barrister can't pick and choose who to defend. They take the job that comes next .

BigBoysDontCry · 24/09/2024 17:47

If the TV show Spiral is accurate, in France it's generally the prosecution that is appointed taxi rank system and people can engage their own defenders if they want/have the funds. Any defender looking for work is also on a taxi rank and will be appointed if the accused person needs one and doesn't have their own.

What's a bit uncanny is a recent film release I just watched. I won't name it, but it's weirdly reflective of this scenario involving men and drugged non consensual sex.

Why not name it? It is a film based on the book Women Talking by Miriam Toews, a true story of a Mennonite community that she has fictionalised ("an imagined response to real events"):

Between 2005 and 2009, over a hundred girls and women in the colony woke up to discover that they had been raped in their sleep. These nighttime attacks were denied or dismissed by colony elders until finally it was revealed that a group of men from the colony were spraying an animal anaesthetic into their victims' houses to render them unconscious.

Women have no idea what some men are willing to do to them for their own gratification.

I thought it was maybe referring to Blink Twice which I saw someone (who was involved) saying was similar to events that happened in relation to a trial relating to a rapper...

Ok, so there are so many examples of men rendering women unconscious for fucking purposes that we can't pin down which one we are alluding to.

What a time to be alive.

Just watched it. Remarkable woman, just like her mother! And what good English too 😉 Have ordered her book to read.
