Not worshipping Starmer btw. There are plenty of things I would like to see him do that he hasn’t. BUT it’s still an improvement on the Tory pantomime.
(This is really just because I’m bored of the ‘sick of Labour?’ daily threads.)

When Labour does it, it's not Austerity™; it's the Short-term Pain™.

See, completely different :)

I mean, i am not a labour supporter, i absolutely hate them - but even I think it's a bit early to judge them! 😂 - give them a chance! Tell you what scares me a bit though - the union guy saying that now labour are in power - HE is going to seize control of the UK economy, KS doesn't scare me as much as that guy does....

Ummmm…. Why do you think he said that??? Do you think it’s a coincidence it coincides with Starmer lead govt?? Ffs 🤦‍♀️

AboutVattime · 24/09/2024 19:09

I think they are going to be amazing.

I listened to the speech. My faves are ;

Renters right bill
Workers rights bill
Nationalised RAILWAYS ❤️
Wind farm difficulties removed .
GB energy
National house building in EVERY community..

That'll do me for now xx

minipie · 24/09/2024 19:13

Tories set a very, very, VERY low bar.

OrwellianTimes · 24/09/2024 19:13

Lesser of two weevils for sure.

They’re appalling. It’s hilarious but I was prepared for these clowns. It’s the poor fools that voted for them that I feel sorry for.

I thought the same about the mouth breathers who voted the Tories in for over a decade. I didn't find it hilarious though; what's funny about foodbank Britain?

eurochick · 24/09/2024 19:38

I didn't vote for them but grudgingly thought they would be a change for the better at least in terms of sleaze if nothing else. I was wrong.

Noses in the trough, money for their train union mates, hammering the already hammered middle class. And I fear they have barely started.

OrangeTeabags · 24/09/2024 19:39

I constantly hear people around me moaning about Labour already.

They took over office in the summer -just before the recess - after years & years of Tory rule and yet people are annoyed they haven't sorted everything out in the space of a few weeks!

This will be their problem, they won't sort the shit show out quickly enough and voters have very short memories.

mugglewump · 24/09/2024 19:40

So , so much better because they are the grown ups in the room.

Terrribletwos · 24/09/2024 19:42

I think they may well be a lot,lot worse.

They are already calling themselves the party of law and order. That doesn't bode
well.

They are already talking absolute shit about how they are going to stop boats by breaking up the criminal gangs. How is this going to happen?

They are already talking about putting a stop to anti social behaviour but absolutely no discussion about the prolific drugs and drug culture which is at the root cause of why our cities and towns are decimated.

As opposed to being the party of sleaze and scandal who wasted public money and gave back handers to their mates during Covid.

I am still waiting to see Michelle Mone & her husband behind bars. Hope that's part of their law & order crack down

Sorry but in what ways exactly have they been “grown up?”

lavenderlou · 24/09/2024 19:59

Anything is better than the last few years of the Tories, with the possible exception of the BNP. I think they are trying to do unpopular things early in the hope they will be effective at improving the economy then the unpopular things will be forgotten by the time of the next election. I guess time will tell. The Tories managed to get re-elected with an increased majority after their austerity politics that actually made most people's lives worse. I'm sure Labour will be held to a higher standard though.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 24/09/2024 20:02

One can hope the Labour Government's performance improves very soon. They will know they are under scrutiny now and can't put another foot wrong as regards their claims about integrity. The conference hasn't been the warm fuzzy feeling of a newly installed Government enjoying the 'honeymoon' period of its first few months in power. It's time for action, not soundbites and blame.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/09/2024 20:31

Good grief - what exactly did you expect them to do in 11 weeks- of which 6 have been summer recess?? Extremely short term thinking.

I for one dont give a shit if Starmer and wife got some free clothes and tickets to gigs and football over a 5 year period, and declared it too- although he would be wise to not do it now in power given the press desire to leap on anything at all- they didn't seem quite so forthcoming with the Tory's. We've got Robert jenryck as a candidate who was actually rushing through planning for party donations . Johnson spent far more on decorating number 10 - public money too and ten times the amount of money on a comms room that appears to have been used very rarely indeed. I'm not exactly that sympathetic about the winter bonus thing either given on James o brien today it was stated one quarter of pensioner couples have assets over a million. A great many own houses outright. If it's that tight draw down £30k on equity release or take some out of pension pots etc. fail to see why loads of well off pensioners get it but my 26 year old son flat sharing in London who gets by but struggles but has a London based job doesn't. I would however maybe change the limit to £22k per household-meaning single pensioners who have only small private pensions (if any ) plus state pension still got it. My 85 year old 'comfortably off ' FIL 100% agrees with me too- He doesn't know a single really struggling pensioner and would prefer that the money went to those who were- and if you are on pension credit or getting housing benefit etc you will still get it.

It's like when a new MD comes in and 10 weeks later the city are baying for blood because she/he hasn't doubled profits and halved costs in 8 weeks.

I don't think people are annoyed about what they haven't done - pretty much everyone recognises that they can't manage a complete 180 degrees on the state of Britain in the time they've had.

It's what they have done that's sticking in a lot of craws.

I'd like to see the evidence for that. It doesn't represent the proportion of pensioners I know.

CockneyWheezer · 24/09/2024 20:37

100%. Any party that could elevate lying sleaze bags like Bojo, incompetent araeholes like Truss and superior twats like Rees-Mogg to leadership roles can fuck right off. I’ll take Labour warts and all any day of the week.

It's not ideal though, is it?

It's like asking a shop to exchange rotten fruit that they just sold you, only for them to replace it with something marginally less mouldy.

Better, but you're not pissing rainbows.

I kind of agree, but I think after 14 years of the Tories I'm so ground down that any kind of improvement will feel like a huge relief!

I don't think they've got off to a good start, to put it mildly, but I'm still optimistic that the country will be in a much better state in five years time.

Hateam · 24/09/2024 20:40

They're all a bunch of useless gobshites.

It's too early to say just how much of a bunch of useless gobshites this bunch of usless gobsites are so it's not possible to say which bunch of useless gobshites are the biggest bunch of useless gobshites

user1471453601 · 24/09/2024 20:52

I voted on 4th July for a government that would govern for five years. I'm not prepared to judge them on less than two months in government.

In a year, I might comment on their direction of travel, in two years I might have an opinion on their progress.

After less than two months in not prepared to judge.

I've worked, in a non political capacity , with government. It takes years to turn around a policy so that it's results can be seen by the public. Most junior ministers last two to three years, hardly time to make a dent in their department.

There are good arguments for and against lengthening the time government s can be in power without an election, I'm just not sure that five years is the optimum amount of time.
