Not worshipping Starmer btw. There are plenty of things I would like to see him do that he hasn’t. BUT it’s still an improvement on the Tory pantomime.
(This is really just because I’m bored of the ‘sick of Labour?’ daily threads.)

They are all equally sleazy, grasping and dishonest.

ChristmasCookie123 · 24/09/2024 13:49

It's been two months.

No-one can assess just yet if they're better or worse.

hattie43 · 24/09/2024 13:51

So far it's no better at all , in fact more worrying .

genesis92 · 24/09/2024 13:53

Christ we've had over a decade of everyone constantly complaining about the Tories. Think people are going to have to get used to it I'm afraid, it's what happens when you're in power.

Welcome to the other side

Sartre · 24/09/2024 13:54

I don’t think they’re any different to the tories to be honest so people voting for the change they promised were totally duped, there is none. More of the nasty party bullshit. Taking money from pensioners (who paid tax for decades lest we forget) to keep them warm over winter - what the fuck. Also the fact they wouldn’t back down on the two child rule for benefits when the evidence shows it would drag millions of innocent children out of poverty.

Oh and let’s not forget Starmer’s donor suits and Rayner’s donor paid New York hotel… More of the same.

That's basically it.

Whoever is in power with our primary two-party system, they're two cheeks of the same arse and some people are going to be pissed off whatever is decided or implemented.

And pissed off by both parties lack of integrity.

Yep.

Anyone that had an expectation that there were different levels of ethics or integrity - nah.

Willyoujustbequiet · 24/09/2024 14:12

Goes without saying really.

It could never be worse than the tories.

I hope you're right. Time will tell.

ByMerryKoala · 24/09/2024 14:19

It's not ideal though, is it?

It's like asking a shop to exchange rotten fruit that they just sold you, only for them to replace it with something marginally less mouldy.

Better, but you're not pissing rainbows.

MrSeptember · 24/09/2024 14:30

Yes, I also can't get my head around this massive scrutiny and accusations when they're just a few months in. Bloody hell, they need time. And I speak as someone who really did think Starmers freebies were at a completely unnecessary and inappropriate level.

There was a piece by William Hague in The Times today. He was making the point that labour don't actually know how to govern and Starmer doesn't know how to "pull the levers" of power. And I really do think that's an important point. It's also really important that Starmer learn, and FAST. He needs a proper team around him, who are empowered to act and to drive things forward.

I used to work in banks and I have a number of large corporate clients now - the one thing they all have in common (the successul ones) is a surprisingly large and robust team around the top person (CEO etc) with titles like "strategy" "advisor" etc.... These people all largely have complete and direct access to the CEO and everything filters through them. But when they speak, they are speaking as the CEO's voice and everyone knows it.

CallYourselfAChef · 24/09/2024 12:00

I wouldn't say they are better in any way. Nor do I think they are "mediocre". They are damaging to the UK.

It comes down to this and @SunriseMonsters post on growth. Without that it won't be the 'mediocre/ boring' below that's the issue.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 24/09/2024 14:54

When people say 'but they've only been in power 3 months, give them time'. They were in opposition for years - it was clear after the Johnson era that they were the next government in waiting. Were they not preparing for government then? It can hardly have come as a shock. I was expecting some big announcements as soon as they came to power. With the exception of WFA and Rwanda, nothing stands out as 'big'. Yes, they got the train drivers back to work but it didn't take much thought to roll over and resolve that. The Blair government seemed to have more energy from the start.

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/09/2024 15:03

YANBU @Cluborange666.

Austerity
Brexit
Trusterfuck economics
Lying to the Queen
Lying to Parliament
The trans shitshow
Multiple, repeated law breaking

The last government was a chaotic clusterfuck that damaged every level of UK society. Labour would struggle topping that, however I'm hoping they're better than mediocre.

Noname99 · 24/09/2024 15:04

When the Tories were in power there was at least one thread daily on how shit they were (& mostly rightly so) but now Labour are in charge and so the threads are about the shit things they do, it’s suddenly ‘not fair.’

When the Tories were in power, there were regular stories in the press exposing their MPs misdeeds but now Labour are in power they are the subject of the stories - it’s not fair.

It’s what happens when you are in power - the scrutiny turns to that party. All the whining is about how it’s not fair is utterly ridiculous and frankly what irritates non cult labour supporters.

It is the utter inability to hold your party to account and constant “it’s not fair” that drives normal people away from the cult Labour Party.

Those people who voted Tory had to own that decision…..the good and the bad …. for the time they were power. I don’t remember a single “it’s not fair” whinging post.

Now Labour is in power, Labour voters have to own that decision …the good and the bad and stop bloody whinging / deflecting or frankly deluding themselves.

Starmer has taken more money off donors for freebies than any party leader ever. The biggest donor was given free access pass to 10 Downing Street.

WFA is a vital sum of money for many more pensioners. Starmer/Labour commissioned a study when they thought the Tories were going to means test it that ‘proved’ thousands of pensioners would die. Either it was a lie then or it’s true now? Which one. MN is the only place with millionaire pensioners. Vast amounts of pensioners who are £3 above the pension credit limit will loose it and will be horribly effected.

JUST OWN IT. Stop moaning and whinging and making excuses. That’s the facts. It’s not ‘not fair’
Welcome to being in power.

spuddy4 · 24/09/2024 15:23

So is mediocre the standard we should aim for? Sad that this is deemed as acceptable by so many people.

Pandasandtigers · 24/09/2024 15:25

Sorry, but one shit show doesn’t excuse another.

He is doing shit, they all are just out for themselves.

Labour would have to go some distance to be worse than the previous Tory government, but they haven't even had their first budget yet - there's plenty of time for them to get that bad.

Tattletwat · 24/09/2024 15:35

Nope they are utter shit and that's just a few months on.

Starmer comes across as a very arrogant man who can't admit when he is wrong And gets angry when challenged.

Meadowfinch · 24/09/2024 15:36

You're setting the bar too low. Labour has a massive majority, they can get things done. However, if we have a bad winter and thousands of pensioners die of cold because they have lost the WFA, that will be directly at Starmer/Rayner's door.

The last ten weeks have seen a lot of self congratulating and treating themselves to all the trappings - new clothes, freebie holidays etc.

That crap needs to stop. Either they want the job - which they knew would not be easy - or they need to get out of the way and let someone else do it.

I'm not impressed so far.I'll give them until the spring before writing them off as equally corrupt and crap as the last lot.

Alectoishome · 24/09/2024 16:58

CookieClutter · 24/09/2024 12:02

I don't like starmer and a lot of his cabinet but I do feel that there is a fundamental difference between the current tories (and the tories of the last 15 years) and labour. I believe that most people in the labour party go into politics because they want to make a difference and make people's life better. I think they mean well. Whereas with the tories I'm convinced that they are amoral chancers who are just in it for money, power and prestige.

So yes, I definitely agree.

How incredibly naive to think that self-serving, useless politicians only join the Tory Party. So innocent and simplistic, to the point of being childlike.

Fescue · 24/09/2024 17:31

Any new government needs time to adapt and get started. What I will say is there seems to have been a complete cliff edge in terms of PR before and then after the election. It is like they made the old team redundant on election day and are doing a DIY job.

LlynTegid · 24/09/2024 17:32

I agree a lot better than the previous one, even though not what I had expected and poor in strategy/communication.

nOasistickets · 24/09/2024 17:42

I mean, i am not a labour supporter, i absolutely hate them - but even I think it's a bit early to judge them! 😂 - give them a chance! Tell you what scares me a bit though - the union guy saying that now labour are in power - HE is going to seize control of the UK economy, KS doesn't scare me as much as that guy does....
