Ive got a nasty viral infection
I saw a gptonight at the hub as mysurgery was full. All thegp said was take antibiotics. He said i have a temperature and swollen glands. I told him i had nausea and aching joints. Hedid not suggest pai killers for the joints or anti nausea
I came home and my joi ts were so bad i could not sleep so i took some painkillers and the aching noints have gone and i can sleep. I dont understanf whd why he didnt suggest this. Why should i stay in pain. He also said my weight loss was due to my infection but if istill have weight loss after im better then it is serious. I dont think that comment was helpful

Why have you been given antibiotics if it is viral? Did the GP specifically say this or are you assuming?

As for the pain relief, I don’t think that most adults need to be told to take some simple paracetamol/ibuprofen when ill or in pain. You just naturally do it. Anti-nausea medication can be easily bought over the counter at the pharmacy.

Was going to say the same

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 02:19

Yes the doctor actually told me it was viral and said that these antibiotics will help and as for the loss of weights I don't think he should have told me that if it continues it's serious

Antibiotics do not work on viral infections

Weight loss - See your GP for more tests

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 02:21

I've got swollen glands and attempt temperature

OP posts:
Flute56 · 24/09/2024 02:22

I do not need to see my GP for more tests for weight loss because the weight losses due to this viral infection because I'm not eating properly and obviously when you don't eat you lose weight because you're not eating the right amount of calories

OP posts:
DryBiscuit · 24/09/2024 02:24

Ok - So the point of your post is?

Yes. As you have an infection of some sort. Very normal symptoms.

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 02:26

The point of my post is I thought the doctor should say take painkillers and give me some anti nausea

How much weight have you lost?

No, I’d say most doctors would expect you to exercise some common sense and know to take them yourself if I’m perfectly honest. Go and see a pharmacist tomorrow to ask about getting some anti-emetics (for the nausea)

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 02:28

CherryValley5 · 24/09/2024 02:26

How much weight have you lost?

4 pounds

4 pounds

So really very, very little. You’re probably just dehydrated and have lost water weight. Why are you so concerned by such a tiny amount, OP?

DryBiscuit · 24/09/2024 02:31

You are ill, so why are you worrying about weighing yourself?

Drink lots, Rest, take painkillers and the antibiotics (but they wont work if it is viral)

DryBiscuit · 24/09/2024 02:33

Why do you need a doctor to tell you to take painkillers if you are in pain?

Paracetamol (painkiller) will also lower your temperature

My concern is that although it's only four pounds the longer this goes on the more weights I will lose so it will go down and down

Lots of people lose weight when they are ill and not eating

Just keep drinking, you will be ok

What was you hoping for? A hospital referral? To be fed thru a tube into your stomach?

Because whenever I go to see my dentist and have treatments he always says to me take painkillers if you're in any discomfort so I just thought the doctor would say the same

Ok - Well he didnt

Im guessing because he thinks adults would take a painkiller if they were in pain

Do you feel you have to wait for a doctor to say it is ok to take them?

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 02:40

And whenever I've been to see my own GP at my own practice they have always said to me take paracetamol for lowering a temperature and take painkillers for the aching joints but this GP didn't say anything like that and because I've never had a Dr not say this I thought it was odd

Ok - Now what?

Why do you need someone to tell you something that you already know then? Again, most doctors would expect some common sense to be used.

If it’s viral your body will clear things up on its own in a few days. If it’s bacterial, the antibiotics will do the job. Keep drinking lots of fluids with electrolytes and eating what you can. As an ordinarily healthy person there is no need to be worried about losing a minuscule amount of weight, with obvious cause.

Josette77 · 24/09/2024 03:14

4 pounds is not enough to be noticeable. Are you underweight?

I think as an adult you figure it out. You also could have asked in the appointment.
