Ive got a nasty viral infection
I saw a gptonight at the hub as mysurgery was full. All thegp said was take antibiotics. He said i have a temperature and swollen glands. I told him i had nausea and aching joints. Hedid not suggest pai killers for the joints or anti nausea
I came home and my joi ts were so bad i could not sleep so i took some painkillers and the aching noints have gone and i can sleep. I dont understanf whd why he didnt suggest this. Why should i stay in pain. He also said my weight loss was due to my infection but if istill have weight loss after im better then it is serious. I dont think that comment was helpful

As adults we have to take some responsibility for our own health. That includes taking a paracetamol when not well.

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 02:26

The point of my post is I thought the doctor should say take painkillers and give me some anti nausea

Sadly, many GPs fail to tell you to beath in and out on a regular basis...
Sometimes, we just have to rake the risk ourselves in terms of stuff such as breathing, taking analgesia when in pain, etc.
It's a bastard, particularly given we've paid for their training and everything.

NQOCDarling · 24/09/2024 04:14

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 02:21

I've got swollen glands and attempt temperature

Attempt temperature?
Also, if it is viral and you have been given antibiotics, you should be suing him for negligent use of NHS money because GPs know, as do many orfinary people, that they not work on viral infections.
The clue is even in their name.
Sorry you are feeling ill, but this is a srange thread..

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 04:02

No im not underweight.

Well what is the issue? You know that you will get your appetite back when you start to feel better.
Reading this thread makes me feel as if I am having my teeth pulled by a dentist without anaesthetic...
But I will take a painkiller...

Zanatdy · 24/09/2024 05:27

He should have suggested paracetamol but guess he assumed you were doing that. 4 pounds when you’re not eating properly as you’re unwell is really nothing to worry about. There’s a reason for the weight loss. I lost 20lbs when I had a major pancreas surgery as I couldn’t eat properly for months. No-one was overly concerned because it was clear I was losing weight due to not eating enough calories. Once fully recovered I gradually gained it back and sure you will with these few pounds.

This post can't be real. Even when my dc were little and in pain they knew to ask for calpol- they didn't need to be told!

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 12:31

I went to my own Gp this morning as i was unsure about the hub doctor last night.. i was checked over again and between 9pm last night and this morning my temperature is normal and i no longer have swollen glands. What was confirmed to me is that my i fectuon is viral and the reason why i have got antibiotics is to prevent the infection going from viral to bacterial so i have to take them. Also the gp this morni g could not prescribe anti sickness as the anti sickness medication makes you very drowsy so i asked the pharmacy if there is any non drowsy anti nausea and she daid no

Sorry, that is untrue clinically
A viral infection will not lead to a bacterial infection
You are misunderstanding all of this

Unless you’re operating heavy machinery or looking after small children then the drowsiness shouldn’t be a big issue, if you even experience it whatsoever. I’ve taken most types of anti nausea pills and have never had any drowsiness from them. Stugeron for example is commonly given to children for travel sickness. Everyone reacts differently.

In case anyone’s still wondering why it’s hard to get a GP appointment for things that actually warrant one….

I am not misunderstanding anything the doctor this morning told me that it is a viral infection so I said to her if it's viral why have I got these antibiotics and she said the doctor gave them to you as it becaution just top it going into bacterial infection and after I left the surgery I went to the pharmacy at my local Boots and ask the pharmacy and a pharmacist said yes it can sometimes lead in to bacterial so you should take these to stop it going from viral to bacterial

OP posts:
Flute56 · 24/09/2024 14:29

If a medically trained doctor tells me the antibiotics are to stop my viral turning into bacterial then because the doctor is qualified then I have to believe what she says so in other words I have not misunderstood anything because I did query this with her and I said why have I got these antibiotics and she told me why and she said if you take these your viral infection will not turn into bacterial

Have you heard of antibiotic resistance @Flute56 ? What have they prescribed you?

The title of the thread may be a clue.. 😬

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 14:39

Clarithromycin and i just found this online.

Yes, viral infections can lead to secondary bacterial infections. This can happen when mucus buildup from a viral infection lingers for a long time.

MissEloiseBridgerton · 24/09/2024 14:39

No wonder the NHS is fucked.

The out of hours GP will have given you antibiotics just in case. He has no way of knowing if it's bacterial or viral without proper lab tests which aren't available at night. It's common in out of hours areas because patients expect something so they get antibiotics. Why they have your clarithromycin, I'll never know.

You could have easily treated yourself at home. There's also not a huge amount of anti nausea medication you can buy OTC. They're mostly prescription only or licensed for travel or migraine nausea only.

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 14:40

Just to say the doctor asked if I had covid I said no because when I took a covid test before it was negative I've just taken another covid test in its positive

OP posts:
CherryValley5 · 24/09/2024 14:42

Why did you feel the need to go to the doctor for a minor illness?

MissEloiseBridgerton · 24/09/2024 14:42

So now you've spread COVID to 2 doctors and have unnecessary antibiotics 👍🏻

UpUpUpU · 24/09/2024 14:46

I meant dose. Prophylactic antibiotics are dosed differently to treatment ones

SallyWD · 24/09/2024 14:58

I wouldn't expect a doctor to tell me to take painkillers. I'm an adult, I know that if I'm in pain I should take painkillers. I know I can get them at many shops for a fraction of the price of a prescription.
However, it's weird that he told you to take antibiotics for a viral infection. I think he must have meant it started as a viral infection and became a bacterial infection. I often have throat and chest infections that start viral and become bacterial.

ghostyslovesheets · 24/09/2024 15:06

Blimey!

if I had a cold I’d rest and take pain killers like most adults

not sure 2 gp slots are needed

my next appointment at my GP is 2 weeks today despite being in chronic pain for 10 days - but I at least know how to manage it

MidLifeXrisis · 24/09/2024 15:13

You are an adult. You shouldn't have to be told that if you are in pain then take painkillers?

DryBiscuit · 24/09/2024 15:15

So not only have you wasted an appoitment today , you have spread covid around a GP surgery and a out of hours hub!

Wittyapple · 24/09/2024 15:30

Next time you're ill with a flu or cold, stay at home and get rest.

If you need painkillers then take them, you shouldnt have to be told to take them and to stay hydrated.

You've wasted a GP appointment, been prescribed something you don't need that isn't going to help, and then came on here to moan about the doctor.
