Ive got a nasty viral infection
I saw a gptonight at the hub as mysurgery was full. All thegp said was take antibiotics. He said i have a temperature and swollen glands. I told him i had nausea and aching joints. Hedid not suggest pai killers for the joints or anti nausea
I came home and my joi ts were so bad i could not sleep so i took some painkillers and the aching noints have gone and i can sleep. I dont understanf whd why he didnt suggest this. Why should i stay in pain. He also said my weight loss was due to my infection but if istill have weight loss after im better then it is serious. I dont think that comment was helpful

Why’s your post labelled with an antibiotic btw if your question is regarding the painkillers
isnt it obvious if you are ill in pain etc you take painkillers when required within the guidelines!
also 4lbs you seem fixated on isn’t a lot I went down to 6 stone when I had flu and I was really poorly
I can’t see what you Aibu is…

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 24/09/2024 16:06

What a waste of 2 appointments. Next time just Google self help tips. No wonder it's hard to see a GP.
Also that is bad practice re the antibiotics you don't give them in case it becomes something else.

llamali · 24/09/2024 16:13

I imagine the gp meant it was likely viral but could be bacterial so gave you antibiotics incase it was bacterial or maybe saw the beginnings of something bacterial. Who knows.

But you're ridiculous if you expect a gp to have to tell you to take painkillers when you are in pain. Most people go when they've tried that!

As for the weight loss they are right to ask you to come back. Unexplained weight loss can be serious.

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 14:40

Just to say the doctor asked if I had covid I said no because when I took a covid test before it was negative I've just taken another covid test in its positive

Oh ffs. You've taken covid to two doctors surgeries and at least one pharmacy

doodleschnoodle · 24/09/2024 16:19

Painkillers and OTC medication are first line of care stuff that doesn't require a GP. If you really didn't know that painkillers prevent pain(!), then a pharmacist could have assisted and given advice.

Stop wasting GP time with nonsense.

ChickpeaPie · 24/09/2024 16:43

This has to be wind up. Do people really go to the GP when they're feeling better?

llamali · 24/09/2024 16:45

How did you get to see a GP in person twice in two days with covid?

INeedAnotherName · 24/09/2024 16:52

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 02:40

And whenever I've been to see my own GP at my own practice they have always said to me take paracetamol for lowering a temperature and take painkillers for the aching joints but this GP didn't say anything like that and because I've never had a Dr not say this I thought it was odd

So you already know what to do for aching joints based on previous advice.

How old are you? Because you are coming across as .... well, I don't think Im allowed to say it.

And why are you weighing yourself if you are so ill? Do you have a an eating/anxiety disorder as well?

HotPotato123 · 24/09/2024 16:54

This is the most bizarre post.

WeeOrcadian · 24/09/2024 16:57

I'm so confused OP

Pain = painkillers (paracetamol,not ibuprofen, that's an anti-inflammatory)

Antibiotics for a viral infection though? I'm not convinced

Flute56 · 24/09/2024 21:55

It doesn't matter anymore I'm bowing out of this thread

My concern is that although it's only four pounds the longer this goes on the more weights I will lose so it will go down and down

4 pounds is nothing! If it’s viral you’ll get better, be able to eat and not lose more weight! Them not saying you can take pain relief isn’t a big deal, you took it and it worked… simple! What’s the issue?!

Balloonhearts · 24/09/2024 22:29

That's not how it works. A viral infection does not turn bacterial any more than a cat turns into a dog. Viruses and bacteria are two different species.

Speak to a different GP if your symptoms continue, this thread makes no sense. Obviously don't go there with covid but I wouldn't go back to the same doctor tbh, they shouldn't be prescribing preventative antibiotics with no reason, it's something high on the priorities at the moment to prevent antibiotic resistance.

As for painkillers, it's common sense to take them if you are in pain and feverish so he probably just assumed you already were.

bridgetreilly · 24/09/2024 22:31

This is all bonkers, OP. Take your meds, get an early night and hopefully you’ll be thinking clearly in the morning.

I can't believe you would take 3 medical professionals time for Covid.

First gives you antibiotics, you expected painkillers - take the bloody painkillers you don't need a doctor to tell you if it hurts take something. You know this.

You are then not happy with the antibiotics so seek a second appointment. To be told first is correct. But no you can't have anti-sickness.n

You them don't agree with no anti-sickness so see a Pharmacist (3rd professional) who agrees with all previous advice.

Why on earth are you wasting everyone's time including coming in here complaining?

nocoolnamesleft · 24/09/2024 22:44

So you've given Covid to two doctors and a pharmacist because you were opinion shopping? Just brilliant.

It is very difficult to get an appointment let alone decide who you will and will not see and I know at my surgery who the better doctors are and if I need an appointment and the better doctors are not available for a good few weeks what choice do I have

Since when have I ever said I was online shopping where did you get that from

OP posts:
nocoolnamesleft · 24/09/2024 22:55

Not online shopping. Opinion shopping. Because why else would you have gone to one HCP after another asking the same questions, especially as you were getting better anyway.

Opentooffers · 24/09/2024 23:22

You can actually develop a secondary bacterial infection after being ill from a virus, but it's bad policy to treat profilactically before there is evidence that it has happened. Until you get the infection, you don't know it's ever going to happen and most people don't need antibiotics.
Don't go to the GP with flu symptoms in future as there are vulnerable people there who could become very ill from covid or flu.
It seems you need to have specific instructions to follow and prefer not to have to think for yourself.

I used to think the warnings like “do not drink” on bleach and “contains nuts” on a bag of walnuts were unnecessary, now I’m actually seeing the point of them 😂.

What do you do if you have a headache OP? Do you need to go to the GP to be told to take painkillers?

I had a doctors appointment today for something very serious and I had to book it 3 weeks ago, I have a follow up emergency appointment on Friday that my GP told me she had to move heaven and earth for, I would love to know how you get such easy appointments!

@Flute56 panadol and ibuprofen are fine to take as needed, thats why you don't need a prescription for them. If you really need reassurance you could pop into a chemist and talk to the pharmacist, correctly masked if coughing or anything respiratory.
Please don't take the antibiotics, some doctors hand them out for everything and antibiotic resistance is a very serious and ever increasing issue. No new antibiotic classes have been discovered since 1987 and their is increasingly resistance to the front line strongest antibiotics, it does cost lives and will cost more and more. We all need to make sure we use antibiotics responsibly even when our GP doesn't. Unless you have a specific condition that makes any infection very dangerous propositions, in which case you'd have been given antivirals, you do not need a course of antibiotics just in case. No one with a normal immune system should be taking antibiotics just in case.

What choice do you have?! You didn’t need to go to the doctors in the first place and yet you went not once, but twice! And you really have the audacity to complain as to why there are no appointments for people who actually need seen? Contemplating over how difficult it is to ‘decide who you see’ when the rest of us are struggling to get seen whatsoever? I despair…
