To ask when Timmy Mallett became such a style icon for middle aged women?

Or Dennis Taylor for that matter.

I'm talking about the ludicrously OTT spectacle frames that seem to be de rigueur for women these days.

Men don't seem to be encouraged to hide their gasp aging face behind overly large spectacle frames. Why are women being conned into it? It looks daft!

Philippa Perry is another one that wears them. To me it goes with middle aged women dying a streak of their hair pink or purple. My sister has just got some very large red glasses, she's worn glasses most of her life so I've seen her in many styles all of which have suited her, but I'm not keen on this latest pair. They all seem somehow to also look so cheap and plasticky, even though many are actually quite expensive.

CraftyOP · 23/09/2024 22:34

I don't know when you last bought glasses but I have to go out of my way to find plain ones, usually after someone puts some crazy glasses on me and tells me I look amazing. I can see why some people just give up! It's hard buying glasses. Also quite dependent on fashion and depending on face shape there can be hardly any choice.

Bookishnerd · 23/09/2024 22:36

Gorgonemilezola · 23/09/2024 22:00

Yup - a couple of people at work have them and I can't listen to what they're saying because I'm so distracted by the ridiculous specs. Fashion victims? Dunno, but they look a bit silly.

You can’t listen to people at work because you get distracted by their glasses?

NuffSaidSam · 23/09/2024 22:30

If the big glasses catch on any more we will all look the same. Perhaps go for really small ones instead? Or a monocle? You don't see those anymore.

I know someone who wears pince -nez sometimes…

cavepainter · 23/09/2024 22:38

It's depressing enough to have to wear reading glasses, fortunately they are cheap as chips on amazon so why not have fun with different frames? Also- they are more comfortable than wire John Lennon type frames and don't catch in your hair.

WTAFisthisnonsense · 23/09/2024 22:39

The oh so obvious dig at older women. Well aren't you a peach OP.

msbevvy · 23/09/2024 22:39

Magpiecomplex · 23/09/2024 22:04

You need a decent size frame to fit in enough varifocal to make them worthwhile. My frames have been getting steadily bigger since needing varifocals because it's really useful to actually be able to see.

Same here. Bigger frames make it a lot easier. I even had to return one pair of varifocals because they weren't working for me and had to change them for a larger frame.

Saveusernsme · 23/09/2024 22:41

I love mine! I bought a pack of 5 from Amazon for leaving around the house but they slowly started to come out and about with me. I love wearing them on Teams calls - think Melanie Griffith in Working Girl rather than Mr Mallet.

Scentedjasmin · 23/09/2024 22:42

Talking of Timmy Mallet, he did an excellent take down of Gregg Wallace a while back. It still makes me chuckle.

My mum wore massive glasses back in the 80s with the arms that kind of bent upwards at an angle from the bottom of the frame.
We used to call them her portholes.
They almost swallowed her entire face, especially as she had a massive perm too which made her hair look like an exploding thatched roof with a pair of eyes peering out of the windows below.

Katielovesteatime · 23/09/2024 22:55

PuttingOnTheKitsch · 23/09/2024 21:53

Exactly.

Those who think I'm being mean, it's far meaner to think that women have to hide their faces behind a massive pair of glasses as soon as they hit 40.

What a bizarre thing to say! Wearing glasses isn’t ‘hiding’ their face?! Glasses are literally made of glass, you can see through them, how does that hide anything? More likely women need glasses and want something bold because that’s they’re style? And … genuinely like them? I don’t wear glasses but I know of the general look you mean and I think it looks really cool! I’ve often been envious that I don’t need glasses because I’d love a bright, bold pair. I think it’s lovely. Why do you have to be so mean and try to make other women feel small and stupid just because they like different things to you? So spiteful.

fivechairs · 23/09/2024 22:56

When you wear glasses full time they become part of your outfit. I wear glasses as I don't like putting contact lenses in. I have 6 pairs in different styles and colours so I can change them to go with my outfits. It's no difference to wearing jewellery or clothes, different people have different preferences and also, wear different styles to suit their mood.
I can only assume that you're one of those people who judges people on their looks generally, not just glasses. That's a shame for you.

Crispynoodle · 23/09/2024 22:24

While I wouldn't wear the silly glasses I can put my hand up to yellow and patent hot pink DMs, dungarees and a lot of different coloured shoes...

omg I need hot pink DMs in my life right now

SuePreemly · 23/09/2024 23:02

Who pissed on your chips OP? Folk can wear what they like, leave em to it.

Really enjoyed that thank you!

Lynda sometimes pops in for a minute or 2 to tell me to get my shit together
finally I bang the brian blessed gong to signal to Lynda that I still exist
😆

I like the glasses Ella Engstrom from Swedish Death Cleaning wears. A strong look but she rocks it.

This isn't it at all.

They're in fashion, is all. It's not about hiding your face.

purloapple · 23/09/2024 23:44

I love seeing women find their style. Think I'll find myself some fun glasses.

Have you ever reflected on why others' style upsets you so much, OP? Do you normally lack confidence?

DillDanding · 23/09/2024 23:45

Suzanna Reid has started wearing glasses like the old guy in ‘Up’ wears.

Knittwit · 23/09/2024 23:48

How miserable a post is this? Some women want to bring a bit of joy to their outfits. It’s nice to wear happy clothes. Try it. Sounds like you need it.

spikeandbuffy · 24/09/2024 00:00

Bigger glasses look better on me. I always went for smaller ones but tried a bigger pair and they look loads better
Browns/bronzes suit me better too as I'm really pale
Wouldn't say they're ridiculous though

Soonenough · 24/09/2024 00:00

I have a pair of these style. Just because I have always worn glasses and these are just a new style I haven't had. Plus I tend to wear black a lot . But in the Specsavers Buy One Get One Half Price offer I also got another more conservative pair for when I am in that mood . It's fun to change accessories just like earrings.

PuttingOnTheKitsch · 24/09/2024 00:44

I was absolutely expecting to be told, IBU, or to mind my own business. Fair enough.

But the number of people who are doing weird cod psychology on me because I don't like a fashion trend is really quite amusing.

Fair enough you might not like the fashion but your op accuses women who do like them of being conned into hiding their face in the ludicrous glasses! It goes beyond just saying you don't like the fashion, it being purposely mean and bitch to people who like to wear them. Many posters have called you out on it. That's not 'cod psychology' it's just calling out bitchiness.
