To ask for help with stopping flatulence

Never had a problem with wind until recently. Have been to the doctor's and they have done the bowel cancer test (clear) but haven't made any suggestions about how to manage it. It's not too much of a problem during the day, but first thing in the morning is bad. I am going away next week and sharing a room, so am paranoid that I will fart in my sleep. Had anyone else had this and successfully managed it? My diet hasn't changed, I don't drink fizzy drinks, I do a reasonable amount of exercise. The only thing that has changed in my life is starting the menopause.

@suki1964 respectfully that’s not normal and is perhaps something you could seek help with

At my age its the least of my worries :)

I was just pointing out that some people do struggle with bodily noises around strangers. I had to share a room with a complete stranger on a weekend break years ago, I got over my fear of public loos that weekend as it was the lesser of two evils ( it was short lived, I still dont use communal loos )

PercyPigInAWig · 23/09/2024 01:24

@suki1964 if I had to drive home for a poo I'd get no work done some days! (IBS)

@CalloftheWind do they still sell Pepto Bismol? Have't seen it in ages but it works quite well. But yes as others say if you want to avoid farting avoid beans and roasted vegetables, onions, garlic.

BoreOffAboutYerChickensEmma · 23/09/2024 01:33

Own it. Stick a kazoo in your butt cheeks and get musical. Confidence in farting is an art, but very freeing! 💨💨

LifeZ · 23/09/2024 01:39

Menopause. White bread unrelated, infact I eat minimal what products and may have none far several weeks at a time. The issue seems to come in waves of a week to ten days then stops for a bit, only to return with a vengeance . I think it's the remnants of the cycle tailing off.

If you like herbal tea try equal amounts of the following dried or fresh herbs:

Mint
Fennel seed
Caraway seed
Chamomile

Add to 200ml boiling water up to 4 times a day and strain or use a bag

These are all anti spasmodic herbs so help to dispel wind quietly and prevent flare ups. They all work individually as well so if you don't like chamomile or fennel you can leave those out but they are very good together.

Add 200ml of boiling water and allow to steep for a few minutes, then sip.Works in minutes and lasts for hours.

You what? If you fart in your sleep (like everyone does) usually the other person is asleep to. And if they heard, well, what would you think if you head someone fart in their sleep?

is this some kind of fart/ poo troll

I probably am overthinking it, but I am going to be sharing with a colleague, not a friend, so feel more self-conscious. With a friend I wouldn't be so bothered.

I already have a reputation of being a bit eccentric at work - I could imagine Miriam Margoyles doing this, and I think maybe I should embrace it.

Don't eat foods that fight! Look up food combining, aka the Hay Diet.

SeaToSki · 23/09/2024 02:23

Magnesium supplement before bed..100% rda. It helps your gut movements work more efficiently and as a side effect you will sleep better and not get restless legs/leg cramps. Most people are deficient without really knowing.

Then add a good probiotic in the morning to balance the good and bad bacteria in your gut, if you over populate the good kind (by taking a probiotic) they will out crowd the bad kind (fart producing)

Mumofstanley · 23/09/2024 02:26

Take a good quality pro biotic. This was me a while ago. Within three days of taking it I was back to normal.

Ozanj · 23/09/2024 02:49

Pevic floor weakness. Speak to a women’s physio and in the meantime start doing planks

ReadingSoManyThreads · 23/09/2024 03:04

I started getting very bad flatulence which was extremely unusual for me. Turned out to be gallstones. I did the Andrea Moritz liver and gallbladder cleanses to get them out naturally.

I'm also finding dairy is making me particularly windy too as I'm getting older. I've switched to lacto-free milk, but still have normal yoghurt, cheese etc. but at least the lacto-free milk helps as I have quite a lot of milk.

Rainbowqueeen · 23/09/2024 05:09

Peppermint tea helps. I find one cup a day makes the world of difference

Carpedimum · 22/09/2024 21:33

Go Keto, you’ll never fart again.

You'll never shit again either

TwigletsAndRadishes · 23/09/2024 05:29

cuckooooooo · 23/09/2024 05:21

You'll never shit again either

I find the opposite. My bowel movements are never more swift and efficient and my digestive system runs like a well oiled machine when I am low carbing. No acid reflux, either.

ArcticBells · 23/09/2024 05:38

To those who blame the menopause, I had terrible wind problems that have completely disappeared with starting the menopause!

Ifyoureadthisyousmellofpoo · 23/09/2024 05:41

Intermittent fasting helps. The menopause can cause it.

ivykaty44 · 23/09/2024 05:46

this is why people should have to sleep in the same room as colleagues

ivykaty44 · 23/09/2024 05:47

Then they’d understand the trepidation of farting with people from work

Missingpate · 23/09/2024 06:33

For people advocating good probiotics, can you please say a bit more? Where do you get them from and what are they? How do you know what’s a good one? I keep hearing this but it’s all a mystery to me at present and don’t know where to start

DuffRose · 23/09/2024 07:15

Another one here to ask please share where you get your good probiotics from

Vettrianofan · 23/09/2024 07:21

Fart if you need to in public, it's a normal bodily function. People who react childish are the ones who have a problem not you!

Rainbowqueeen · 23/09/2024 05:09

I agree with this. Such an easy natural remedy. We have loads of peppermint tea bags in our house not just for that reason but it's a bonus.

Fescue · 23/09/2024 07:26

If the room has a bunk bed, sleep on top.

also try avoiding mushrooms and any sort of dried fruit with added sulphur. 🍄🍑
