Vaping outside

Yesterday I went out to a local village with my husband and child and we were walking down the high street (i was vaping) and a woman with a pram barges past and says "excuse me can I get past - I don't want your vape in my face". I completely get people don't like vaping, fair enough but I had no idea she was even behind me! So was she rude or am I overreacting?

It smell gross and she’s NBU to not want herself or her baby to be breathing in god knows what.

5128gap · 22/09/2024 18:22

She was rude but people feel very strongly about vaping especially near their DC, and she was likely very annoyed with you. Its better manners on your part to vape only when you're sure you not near others. So not walking down the street, but stopping and finding a quiet spot. You should really use the same courtesy you would for smoking, because many people worry about it just as much.

Soitis83 · 22/09/2024 18:22

I vape and I check for people around me a lot, and if there is anyone behind me or near enough to me I won't vape. Like I hate when people's smoke for cigarettes gets wafted in my face, so I'm aware people may be the same with vape too. Maybe she was just having a bad day and reacted to it badly who knows. But just be more aware of your surroundings in future I guess.

CrouchingTigerHiddenChocolate · 22/09/2024 18:24

You were rude by wandering about vaping rather than standing out the way somewhere.

She was rude in response to your rudeness.

mycatsbestfriend · 22/09/2024 18:25

Yeah it wasn't your fault

LollySox · 22/09/2024 18:27

That's the thing I get that people don't want my vape near them fair enough but I just had no idea she was there. Personally if I were in her position I would have just said "excuse me can I get past?" And left it at that. Also it's not one of these giant vapes that gives off a huge cloud.

you weren't in the wrong for vaping outside. she wasn't in the wrong for not wanting to passively vape by walking behind you (especially with a baby), I don't like walking behind vapers and smokers. barging isn't nice, but it can be a struggle to speed up enough to overtake, I guess even more so with a pram.

Ted22 · 22/09/2024 18:29

As someone who has vaped and smoked at various points in my life, yeah its rude and invasive to the people around you, so you kind of have to suck it up if people react badly. Or ensure you don’t do it near others.

I personally have never and would never vape or smoke next to my child, so maybe she was judging you for that, and for having it near her baby too.

I also wonder if you were walking three abreast on the pavement which is frustrating for pram users.

Ablondiebutagoody · 22/09/2024 18:30

Presumably she's fine with sucking in the traffic fumes or with other people breathing hers when she drives by

Precipice · 22/09/2024 18:32

She was right.

You say it doesn't give off a 'huge cloud'. Even where vapes don't give off a big puff of smoke, they can definitely be smelt. I've encountered people smoking them at crossings before and even when you can't see anything, you can definitely smell it. It's awful.

Hekett · 22/09/2024 18:32

She was rude (and precious). You were outside for gods sake 😂

LollySox · 22/09/2024 18:33

Not 3 a breast getting in the way ( I have terrible anxiety about imposing or inconveniencing anyone) plenty of room. I just thought it was a rude way to go about it

OP posts:
mushpush · 22/09/2024 18:34

Meh, not the most polite way to say it - but if you're going to be doing something in public that impacts other people (e.g having to breathe in vape / smoke) then I think it's fair enough if they want to comment on it. There's nicer ways to do it though!

LemonPeonies · 22/09/2024 18:35

Well you can't very well vape inside can you? 🤣 she sounds deranged.

You might as well fart walking down the street, both pretty gross

Mickey79 · 22/09/2024 18:39

Yes she was rude and best ignored.

mycatsbestfriend · 22/09/2024 18:40

And when you think about it everyone's always breathing in other peoples breath anyway. The vape just flavours it to make it noticeable. I realised this during covid

Bulkypeepants · 22/09/2024 18:41

Vaping is the most tragic past time. Looks common and smells revolting. No one wants to breathe in your insipid exhalations. YABU.

PonyPatter44 · 22/09/2024 18:44

I think you were both rude - although you were just thoughtless and she was sanctimonious and stupid.

BarbaraHoward · 22/09/2024 18:44

SINBU to overtake so she's not walking in your vaping (I would too tbh regardless of the pram), but SIBU to be so rude about it. You were doing something perfectly legal outdoors.

cheeeesey · 22/09/2024 18:46

Ugh, is it fruity? Gross. I'm with her. Check behind you before you start puffing on it

BananaSplitSandwich · 22/09/2024 18:46

It’s a disgusting habit and I hate it when the smoke gets in my face. You should do it in your own home and not around other people, that includes your own child!!

AboutVattime · 22/09/2024 18:48

I smoke. Yes I know it's gross .

However I will never forget one thing my mother said to me when I was about 17.

'Smoking is bad enough but please promise me you will NEVER smoke and walk. It's common. '

I never have. I can't even smoke standing up !

I chose to partake of the revolting habit but no one else needs to be inflicted with it . I have given up for 5 years.. at 3 pregnancies.. 2 x 7 years and yet back on it again.. I smoke outside in my garden and at designated spots . So pub gardens in the smoking area. I work on the basis that if it doesn't say you can - then don't . rather than vice versa .

BarbaraHoward · 22/09/2024 18:52

Common. 😂

Honestly sometimes these threads are enough to make this asthmatic want to take up smoking.
