To ask son to reduce water consumption

VestPantsandSocks · 22/09/2024 11:23

My adult son leaves the water running whilst shampooing his hair and soaping himself during his 20 minute shower.

AIBU to ask him to switch off the water at these times?

I did speak to him many times about this and he believes I AIBU, hence the post.

He is definitely not misbehaving in there as he has form for wasting water ie leaving the taps on to steam his suit.

I was ironing on the landing and all I could hear was the continuous running of water.

We have a excellent boiler so no delay in hot water coming through.
Bathroom is fully heated. Pressure is very high.

I personally switch off the taps as we were brought up to believe that water is a precious resource.

Not contributing to bills.

Fyi - masturbating is not "misbehaving"

What an archaic attitude

soupfiend · 22/09/2024 18:03

The easy solution to this is that he pays some money towards the bills, thats reasonable and fair.

SunsetSkylane · 22/09/2024 18:06

Can anyone say what the saving would be if he had five minute showers instead?

Dying to know if all this angst would save a decent amount or, like, 20 quid a year.

Well since we’re going down the navy example you could do what they used to do. Everyone got a bucket of water at the beginning of the day. You used it for everything; washing, drinking, laundry, etc. When you ran out that was that.

Pfft you kardashians with your 2 min showers.

soupfiend · 22/09/2024 18:07

Probably pennies, more if its an electric shower they can ramp up the cost but on a normal combi boiler and tap arrangement, very little I would have thought

MerryTraveller · 22/09/2024 18:12

Yikes! Maybe it's living abroad combined with boarding school, but this sounds incredibly wasteful. Wasting resources is a massive turn off (excuse the pun), I'm surprised the younger generation don't know this? My parents would have (not literally) murdered me if I'd left the shower running while I was in it.

soupfiend · 22/09/2024 18:14

How is it a waste, its serving a purpose?

Why is there freezing cold air in your own home?

The air is room temperature, but it feels cold if you've been under a lovely hot shower? Because you're wet... It's science

Do you not have to stand there with cold water running when you switch it back on, until it heats up?

That sounds horrible!

Also in Scotland though where it's not metered but still don't think I'd do this. I'd cry 😂

That's what mine is like. I never turn it off I'd have to step out and wait to get it hot again, maybe my house is cold, I'm in Wales.

UrbanFan · 22/09/2024 18:24

If he pays towards the bills he can run the tap as long as he likes, otherwise leave him alone. How do you know what he is doing in the shower anyway?

lazyarse123 · 22/09/2024 18:27

10 minutes is plenty long enough. I would not turn it off between soaking and shampooing, who can be arsed with that nonsense? But he definitely should be contributing.

@UrbanFan OP said that he doesn’t contribute financially. That’s why I suggested showing him the utility bills - my teenagers were shocked at what utilities cost!

Explain how "Navy" showers work. Turn on shower and get wet. Turn off shower and soap yourself all over. Turn on shower and rinse. Job done😁

Oh god no! I couldn't stand there in the cold shampooing/conditioning & then go through the palaver of getting the temp right, it goes from scalding to arctic in nano seconds!

Shorter showers is the only answer

The difference.

soupfiend · 22/09/2024 18:53

BurningGubbins · 22/09/2024 18:40

Right, I googled it.

According to Ideal Home a gas heated 20 min shower costs about 70p. (It was the first result).

Well someone asked about the difference in cost. I felt the difference would be pennies

So if its 70p for 20mins, then its 35p for 10 mins

Therefore saving £2.45 per week if he cut down to 10 min showers.

Charge him a fiver a week for his showers then for taking 20 min showers.

FasterMichelin · 22/09/2024 18:56

I've never heard of anyone who stands in the shower lathering with the shower off. I mean, it's a matter of 60 secs.

Pick your battles, this one is definitely not worth it.

SunsetSkylane · 22/09/2024 19:00

You'd be saving less than £2.50 a week?

Fucking hell just let him have the shower.

I suppose an electric shower would be more expensive.

2catsandhappy · 22/09/2024 19:13

Can you tell him @VestPantsandSocks that you are going to transfer the bill to his name? Show him some past bills and see if that focuses his mind.

But it's less than a tenner a month; bit of an overreaction I think.
