To ask son to reduce water consumption

VestPantsandSocks · 22/09/2024 11:23

My adult son leaves the water running whilst shampooing his hair and soaping himself during his 20 minute shower.

AIBU to ask him to switch off the water at these times?

By the way navy showers are shorter still here, dd wets her hair in the sink, lathers up, then showers to rinse it and wash body, 90seconds she reckons. 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner of course and dry shampoo fir emergencies eg when the fresh water maker fails

My husband used to work on a boat. He takes about two minutes to shower and the water isn’t on all that time. He does have short hair though which does help.

Yes this. He's probably beating one out in there 🤣

Lovely.

BurningGubbins · 22/09/2024 14:21

Jesus Christ, is this going to be the new not-putting-the-heating-on? "35 seconds is more than enough for a shower, I can't stand anything longer. If I accidentally leave it on for 40 seconds I have to rub myself all over in silica packets to get rid of the waterlogging".
There are no prizes for World's Shortest Shower you know.

@WetBandits Do you think he's that brave when he knows mum is listening to see if he turns off the water to soap up and shampoo?

I'd suspect 20 mins showers are a cover for a locked door with some privacy too, adult son needs to move out..

was my first thought 🫢😅

If you're on a water meter it.makes sense to be more frugal with water use.

I lived in a metered property, with 3 teens who often sat in the shower and had a daily shower. Also ran a dishwasher and did lots of washing. Water bill was fine, and comparable to my now unmetered house where we use less water but I have an estimated bill. Now I am careful with heating, I’m not turning the shower off in between steps and waiting for it to heat back up each time.

GilbertLeslieChesterton · 22/09/2024 14:30

I tried the on off thing when DH was moaning about the water bill. It made no noticeable difference to the bill but a big difference to my enjoyment of the shower.

I'd turn the water off at the mains to make a point 🤷‍♀️ 20 minutes once in a blue moon is okay, but every time?

Genuinely would you?? What an absolutely shite thing to do.

How much are we talking here, what's the extra cost of a 20 minute shower over, say, a 10 minute shower?

Water which costs money to heat up and money to use if you're on a meter and a bathroom in use for 20 minutes

Not in reasonable at all to tell him he needs to take a shorter time, when he has his own house and pays his own bills he can do what he likes

The only point you'd be making is that you're a dick.

Why not - and I realise this is controversial - talk to him? Ask him to contribute a little extra if he wants a longer shower. Although I'm surprised it makes that much difference to the bill.

YellowphantGrey · 22/09/2024 14:41

What's the cost of a 20 minute shower compared to a 10 minute shower? Get him to cover the difference?

If you've always had the showers you want him to have eg get wet, water off, soap up and shampoo, water on rinse and off, and you do this, Dad does this and he did this, when did you notice he had stopped? Have you asked why he's stopped?

Or doesn't anyone else shower the way you want him too and you're annoyed because he's in the bathroom for 20 minutes?

Borninabarn32 · 22/09/2024 14:43

I would only be switching the water off while soaping myself if I was truly on the bones of my arse. I cannot imagine how miserable that is.

CantConfessWontConfess · 22/09/2024 14:43

Some people on here live such miserly lives!
I can easily take 20 minutes in the shower, my daughter is in there for about 40 minutes on a Sunday, it's part of her self care routine (probably about 20 minutes on a normal day) my son and husband probably take around 10 minutes but I'm not sure as I am not timing them.....
We also have days when we like a long hot bath🤷‍♀️
I genuinely cannot imagine timing my kids in the shower, it's one of life's pleasures especially if you have 'nice' soaps, shower gels and shampoos to use.

QuestionableMouse · 22/09/2024 14:46

mitogoshigg · 22/09/2024 13:30

5 minutes is plenty long enough to shower, that includes deep conditioning long hair and shaving (whilst deep conditioner works!) a normal shower is 3 minutes for me. If people want to soak in water for longer than 5 minutes, a bath makes sense

Really? Because I can't even get the shampoo rinsed from my hair in that length of time. And I'm not using too much shampoo.

ThatSong · 22/09/2024 14:49

I wouldn't, but then 20 minute showers are normal to me.

If you're bothered, then speak to him.

I don't know what you mean, dont you understand the cost and bathroom hogging elements?

Obviously if you stand outside when its raining to do your showering its only water but it's stupid not to recognise the other issues for indoor showers with heated water.

NotOnlyFedUpButAlso · 22/09/2024 15:03

Christ this has gone so typcally MN. Never, "I find that..." or "in my view.." but "5 minutes is plenty long enough". Says who? Twenty minute shower? What a delight, let ot go!

Workhardcryharder · 22/09/2024 15:06

WetBandits · 22/09/2024 11:35

I think there’s a reason he’s leaving the water on for that long, and it’s not to wash his hair. Envy

A ‘full’ shower for me takes ten minutes, and that’s including a hair wash (very long, thick hair!), full
body exfoliation and leg and armpit shave. The water goes off between each step! Normal shower (just washing my body) takes less than two minutes. My weekly wallow in the bath is the treat.

I would sooner die than stand cold and sodding wet in a shower whilst I lather up 😂 you must be pretty resilient!

soupfiend · 22/09/2024 15:07

GrazingGoat · 22/09/2024 11:25

Yes - ask him. Water is a finite expensive resource.

Well, water doesnt go anywhere as such, we still have the same amount of water on and in the earth and in the atmosphere right from when the earth was created/came about

But where its stored and what it does changes as according to climate, earth cycles and man's intervention

VestPantsandSocks · 22/09/2024 15:08

I did speak to him many times about this and he believes I AIBU, hence the post.

He is definitely not misbehaving in there as he has form for wasting water ie leaving the taps on to steam his suit.

I was ironing on the landing and all I could hear was the continuous running of water.

We have a excellent boiler so no delay in hot water coming through.
Bathroom is fully heated. Pressure is very high.

I personally switch off the taps as we were brought up to believe that water is a precious resource.

Not contributing to bills.
