Mum drinking at pick up

Cybertron · 20/09/2024 18:30

After school pick up at 3.15pm a lot of us take our kids to the local park. The kids play on the playground and we sit under benches by the trees. I chat to the mums that are there and have done for a couple of years but I am not close to any of them. Today one mum was chatting to me and she reeked of booze. She told me that she had filled her water bottle with white wine and laughed saying it was the only way to get through the day. She then continued to drink the wine. Her kids are under 10. Should I say or do something or is this ok?
AIBU: leave it she deserves to unwind
YABU: drinking like that with kids is not ok

Until now 😂

Yep, and it's TOO LATE!! 😂

Maybe when the grandkids come along. IF they ever do!😆

Miyagi99 · 20/09/2024 21:58

She’s probably drinking it out of a water bottle because it’s not very practical to take a whole bottle and crystal glass to the park.

Dhdidndnddn · 20/09/2024 21:55

Some people are minimising this. I guess these people haven’t had an alcoholic in their lives and for that I envy them.

This screams that she has an issue.

Might be able to brush it off now ‘oh she wasn’t harming anyone, she was pleasant, it was just the one.’

Yeah probably the first of many. Might be pleasant the time you saw her but not when she’s craving a drink the next day and having mood swings. Not when she’s acting an arse at 7 PM after her 8th drink of the day.

An alcoholic home is not a good home for a child despite whether the kids ‘seem’ happy.

Kids hide trauma and swigging wine from a water bottle and trying to make light of it as it it’s normal at 3 PM when picking your kids up is ALCOHOLIC BEHAVIOUR.

I think your past is clouding your judgement. All the op see was a grown adult have a drink on one occasion on a Friday afternoon she knows nothing else about her

Wrong. Lots of glass and lots of adults drinking is far better for children's play areas.

Dibbydoos · 20/09/2024 22:00

OMW, you all jumped from a mum with wine in her water bottle to alcoholic!

We all know if anyone has alcohol even the smallest amount and we don't, they stink of alcohol.

So being fair to the mum, she sounded OK and could reason, so not drunk. Her bottle might hold 3 glasses or so and not a full bottle.

Why does she have a prob? If she ricked up with a couple of cans of ready made gin and tonic or a can of larger that would be fine, right?
Who are you telling @Cybertron? Blooming talk to her, she sounds like she may need to offload!

@Tricho

I'm sorry to say that needing to put alcohol into a Stanley cup and drinking it whilst shopping with a baby is very much the EPITOME of a problem,

Jeez.

😂😂😂 jeez about the Stanley cups.

People saying she didn’t hide it - some alcoholics hide in plain sight and often make light and joke about their drinking in order to normalise it. It’s easier to drink in front of people and get a joke in about it so people don’t question it; than to secretly drink.

jessr1990 · 20/09/2024 22:04

I'd say that she knows it's not OK too, because if she thought it was OK to be drinking wine at school pick up she'd have bought it in the bottle or it's container, and not tried to hide it in a water bottle.

You should be able to anonymously raise a concern with school. Other people may also have raised concerns.

She was drinking in an unusual situation, out of an unusual implement and stunk of alcohol, , however I do agree it’s one snippet so I’m not saying I am 100% right and I respect your view.

Hiding wine in your water bottle for school pick up is hardly entry level alcoholism is it? Very unlikely to be the first time.

Where did it say she was hiding it? You’ve made that up.

Is her name Linda Carter?

It’s scary how many people are reading the op & completely changing it.

I personally don't think drinking in a park in the afternoon is unusual

I wouldn’t call a bottle an unusual implement (do you mean receptacle?) to drink liquids out of, or would you rather she was swigging from the wine bottle?!

StarDolphins · 20/09/2024 22:13

Coatsoff42 · 20/09/2024 21:44

Because I’m not hiding it. It’s in a glass, it’s clear what it is. It’s not in a mug, or a tea cup, or a flask or a waterbottle. It’s wine I’m not hiding it, there’s not a problem with it.

👏 you’re the better mum!

Possibly had the same amount but yours was in a wine glass.

RTOP for clarity on hiding.

🤣🤣🤣 That made me spit my vodka out I'm on my 2nd bottle but don't worry ladies I'm drinking out of a glass so that makes it ok 👌

ThorndonCream · 20/09/2024 19:34

I think once somebody has progressed to downing white wine from their water bottle, there is no question as to them not having a drinking problem. I just hope she doesn't drive in that state and her poor children are safe.

This.
I’m sure this isn’t the start of her drinking. She needs help.

Ceebs85 · 20/09/2024 22:17

The fact she was so open about it makes me feel it's not as sordid as it could be.

I think without any other cause for concern I wouldn't do anything with the information in terms of reporting anything. I'd deem that overkill at this stage. I would approach the person next week some time to say you've been worrying about it and check she's ok.

NerrSnerr · 20/09/2024 22:20

Surely most people realise that drinking wine from a water bottle at school pick up time MIGHT be indicative of an alcohol problem. It might not but those of us who have had relatives with alcohol problems have said it's exactly the kind of thing their relative would have done.

Some posters are posting excessively to try and prove that someone they haven't met isn't an alcoholic.

😂😂😂 This thread has made me laugh. I do think the lady’s behaviour is a bit hmmm but I do agree we don’t know the full circumstances. @Miyagi99 yes I think I meant receptacle 😂

Or some people are trying to prove that someone they haven't met is an alcoholic. The whole thread is bizarre. The OP has just made various judgements based on very little information about someone she doesnt even know well and some people are suggesting social services are immediately called. Madness.

Help? She needs rehab & pronto. She’s absolutely blind drunk, secretly drinking wine out of a 2ltr bottle and she had a bottle of Prosecco on the drive to the park.

So many people putting 2+ 2 together & getting 3072.

HeliotropePJs · 20/09/2024 22:28

At this point, I'd make a mental note and see if she behaves strangely or drunkenly when you see her from now on. I think it's fair to say that it's not ideal for a parent to reek of alcohol when taking their child to the park in the afternoon, but if it's actually a problem worth reporting, I'd expect there will be more evidence than this to go on.
