Can I just start this by saying I have had a very stressful week so tbh I am not feeling as capable of handling general stuff that life throws at you. I am also a dog lover and have my own dog, this isn’t a dog hating thread… but I was walking back from town with my primary aged autistic daughter who was wearing her green sunflower lanyard, (not that relevant but just adds to how selfish I feel this woman was). She was sitting on the only bench in a small park, my daughter wanted to sit on the bench as we always do but there was a woman shitting there taking up most of the bench on the phone with her young Labrador on a long lead. So I persuaded my daughter to sit on a wall a bit lower down. I did notice she had the dog on a long lead and didn’t seem to be paying much attention as she wasn’t looking what the dog was doing but when we sat down the dog was several meters away at the top of the park. The next thing I know something is on my back and it’s the dog. I grab hold the lead thinking she will call the dog and in attempt to pull it off, but she does nothing and the dog stays on my back so I get up, she doesn’t lock the lead or call the dogs name or even get up and come over. I realize she is doing nothing and the dog is not getting off. When I get up my jumper falls on the floor, a nice wool jumper, and the dog grabs it and plays with it. Still she dosen’t come over. I have to hold the end of the extended lead and I walk off with my daughter. As I get to leaving the park I heard her saying something about us on the phone making out it was our fault. So I shouted from the top of the park, as I am really pissed off “excuse me you should keep your dog on a shorter lead and she tells me ‘l’ll keep my dog on any lead length I like!’ I am stunned! That she has witness her dog jump all over me, grab my clothes and done nothing to stop it and then she then told me I shouldn’t have sat down, that I am self righteous and to fuck off. I am angry and shouting as a few metres away by this point at the top of the park. I keep saying all you had to do was apologise, and she tells me it’s all my fault for not noticing she had the dog, daring to sit down in a public park and that we probably sat there hoping she would move off the bench. I tell her I like dogs, but you need to keep your dog under control and I did her she is very selfish. Telling me he’s just a baby (at this point I said no he’s not he’s a dog!! Ffs) My daughter is very upset because I am shouting and I instantly regret loosing my temper and can’t stop crying once I get home as I feels like the straw that broke the camels back. After writing it out I don’t think I was unreasonable just wish I could have been calmer, I’m still stunned that anyone could be so selfish. So AIBU to have told her to keep her dog under control? The dog was not fully grown by the way but not a small puppy either.

Collapsible walking stick?

Wack the dog which you are entitled to do

Alifemadelessordinary · 20/09/2024 19:16

Of course YANBU OP! I'm so sorry you went through this.

I have two dogs which I love dearly, but the obsession with dogs being allowed in all public spaces is getting out of hand and the humanisation of dogs is just plain weird.

Aw OP she’s a twat and of course a normal person would have been mortified and apologised to you. Don’t beat yourself up and just try to forget about it.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 20/09/2024 18:21

Dog should be destroyed if it can’t keep its grubby twat paws off innocent bystanders. We should not tolerate this bullshit any more.

It stole a jumper. Calm down.

Reversetail · 20/09/2024 19:20

@Imfreetofeelgood yeah excellent typo on my behalf 😅😅

Admitting to carrying a dangerous weapon on a public forum? Very sensible - not! Do get a grip. If you feel that a lethal weapon is a good option then that says an awful lot about your mentality. Quite scary really. I’d much rather have a dog approach my child than someone like you!

I don't understand why people don't give dogs a kick in this kind of situation

Don’t try and do that as most people I know if you did that they’d be offended.

There’s a man NDN who lives the other end of the street and walks his standard female dachshund and a chocolate Labrador twice a day, if you are friendly with them he’s fine but he’s told me the dachshund is very friendly, she is! My DCat is probably scowling at me for daring to stroke her number one enemies, she sort of rehomed herself from her original house to mine (all legal and sorted) when they got a Schnauzer.

EasternStandard · 20/09/2024 19:24

yanbu this sounds awful

Ugh at that person

You should check out the law on carrying an offensive weapon and not give such reckless advice.

No, the dogs should be rehomed with decent, responsible owners. The irresponsible owners should be "destroyed".

@Spacebarn i mean the comment about the knife not yours!

It stole a jumper. Calm down.

It jumped on top of a person without her consent. If I did that I’d be charged with assault.

CleverLemonCat · 20/09/2024 19:30

Feel your pain. A few weeks ago I was merrily walking down the pavement when a small dog (on a hugely extended lead) wrapped itself around my legs. Literally round and round and round. The owner and her friend, old enough to know better imo, just tittered and thought it highly amusing. I wanted to launch said dog into the road, but had to settle for what my son describes as my 'angry face' and some choice language. That did stop the tittering. Sorry about your lovely wool jumper, and you were right to give her a bollocking.

LetsSeeHowFarWeveCome · 20/09/2024 19:31

I am so fed up of all the shitty dog owners out there. And there are many.

I'm sorry this happened to you, OP. She was completely in the wrong for failing to have control of her dog.

WappityWabbit · 20/09/2024 19:31

@FOJN

I don't live in the UK so your laws don't apply to me. 😊

Yes, if I'm in fear of my life from a human or a dog, I will react and attack them back.

CherryValley5 · 20/09/2024 19:31

Another day, any dog hating thread 🥱 Blame useless owners and the now overgrown, untrained + unsocialised lockdown puppies, not an innocent animal who doesn’t know any better.

OP, I am certain that in reality you knew the answer to your question before asking the entirety of MN and starting even more dog related froth.. Of course YANBU, the owner sounds ridiculous.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 20/09/2024 19:32

I’d suggest carrying an attack alarm but that would probably frighten your daughter.
And the extending lead owners do seem to be the dimmest as someone upthread said. I watched one walking through a crowded town, lucky it wasn’t hit as it went into the road as the owner couldn’t control the lead.

CherryValley5 · 20/09/2024 19:35

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 20/09/2024 19:28

It jumped on top of a person without her consent. If I did that I’d be charged with assault.

The key difference being that you’re (hopefully) not a playful dog.

I’m not saying that it is acceptable behaviour, but it’s not malicious or akin to assault. Purely down to a dog that hasn’t been trained and a useless owner who clearly can’t be bothered to do so.

Reversetail · 20/09/2024 19:35

@CherryValley5 thanks, as I said at the start ‘not a dog hating thread’ and I didn’t have an argument with the dog, I’m complaining about the abuse I got from its owner, it takes a lot to upset me about dogs, as I love them, and luckily as in this scenario I am not frightened of them.

I remember as an exhausted new mum I had finally pushed DD round the park enough for her to go to sleep, I sat on a bench in a very quiet spot.

I placed the pram at arm's length from me as any little noise would wake her up. Next thing a huge dog ran up to the pram going absolutely nuts barking at it.

Eventually a woman sauntered up and unapologetically told me "Hugo doesn't like black" (it was a black iCandy pram).

People!!!
