Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser

Are they worth it?
It’s coming to that time of year (although it’s hot and sunny at the moment!) and was thinking of getting as a joint Xmas gift for DCs.
I spoke to someone at Hotel Chocolat but I still don’t really understand what they do (the velvetiser, not the shop assistant). Are they just a glorified milk frother that take up extra space and cost a lot more?
TIA

I have a Nespresso Aerocino - it’s great for frothing milk. DD tried to prove its as good as the Velvetiser for hot chocolate - it’s NOT!

If I had to choose between the two gadgets ….. Velvetiser all the way.

JammieMaggie · 21/09/2024 14:42

I make hot chocolate using my NutriBullet.

FateFellShortThisTime · 21/09/2024 14:47

I use mine almost daily when I make a coffee. I use it to heat and froth the milk and syrup together and it makes an amazing cup!

Me and the kids also use it for hot chocolate in the autumn/winter but I do find the sachets expensive so we usually use a good hot chocolate powder or sometimes we use our favourite chocolate bars. A kinder hot chocolate in there is so good!

‘don't know if the quality has declined or if there is something wrong with my velvetiser (overheating the chocolate perhaps). So it's rarely used.’

Bought by Mars in January.

Seriously, when you’ve been stood there for 7 mins furiously wanking off a pan of milk with a frother, you’ll wish you’d bought the velvetiser 🤣

(if they use this in advertising, remember you heard it from me)

Oh sweet holy jeez🤣🤣🤣 I haven't spat out my hot chocolate, but I probably should have!

Fivebyfive2 · 21/09/2024 17:08

My brother has the velvetiser and loves it, uses it all the time!

I have the Salter hot chocolate maker, which is a bit cheaper. It seems to work really well and I use the hotel Chocolat sachets and whittard powder usually. I absolutely love it - in fact we've just come home from a long day walking and the thunder storms are setting in for the night so I've just made myself a mint one 😋

The mint one is lovely I like the chocolate orange one to

I considered it for about three seconds.

Then realised that DP and I like a big hot chocolate, we like it actually properly hot, and so using a pan on the hob, or microwaving milk and pouring it over proper chocolate flakes/grated or chopped chocolate, was the way forward.

So we blew a tenner on a little whizzy frother stick and bought some fancy chocolate and thats what we do.

If its for just one person who likes tiny luke warm hot chocolates... yeah.

I'm surprised how many say luke warm. I find it hot. Yes it doesn't give your mouth a 3rd degree burn if you like that kind of thing but it's designed to be the optimal drinking temperature and is ready to drink straight away

Frozenberries · 21/09/2024 17:17

I love mine. I prefer the cadburys hot chocolate than the expensive velvitiser ones so tend to use that. When I used to use the pan it always had a skin of milk on the top which I hated. The velvitiser makes it smooth and frothy. I use it all the time in the winter.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 21/09/2024 17:17

Much nicer and cheaper to make your own in a pain, using a hand whisk if you like a bit of froth. Good quality cocoa powder makes it delicious, and it's properly hot too.

I gave one to DS and his family for Christmas we went to visit about 6 months later and they hadn't even opened it. He said they had a milk frother and they didn't need to velvetiser

How rude I hope you took it back they could of at least tried it they ain't cheap

Popadomorbread · 21/09/2024 17:25

Get a hot milk frother from Asda instead. £15 and works just as well.

Iamthemoom · 21/09/2024 17:27

DH uses his (gift from me) every single night and loves it. But he doesn't use their sachets but makes a healthier version of hot chocolate with the raw ingredients (he's a health freak and it's his one and only treat pretty much!)
It works really well and makes lovely smooth hot chocolate but I don't ever feel like it's quite hot enough. I'm looking at getting a milk frother instead.
I think whether it's worth it depends how often you would use it. I do use it to froth milk for lattes and cappuccinos too.

Do these actually make hot chocolate or does it just froth milk which you then add to hot chocolate

Katypp · 21/09/2024 17:33

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but m&s do boxes of 70% chocolate flakes, £5 for 250g (the same as HC) which are lovely. They also do a milk chocolate version but I haven't tried that yet

meiehwa · 21/09/2024 17:45

You can usually pick up cheap sachets on eBay

You put the milk and the chocolate in together and it blends them together

Frozenberries · 21/09/2024 17:48

I press it twice and then it plenty hot enough

I find that it is possible to drink the entire mug in one go because it's not hot enough - that isn't optimal drinking temperature IMO. It needs to be hot enough to allow you to sip at it. If I don't drink it all in one then it just gets cold.

I tend to microwave it briefly whilst I wipe wash the machine with water and a sponge.

Bjorkdidit · 21/09/2024 19:07

I agree @SoupDragon . Whether it's the Velvetiser or in coffee shops, it ruins the experience if you can't sip at it while relaxing.

I think I bought a HC hot chocolate in their cafe, asked for it to be extra hot and it was still barely lukewarm. So you have to neck it down or its undrinkable so a waste of money as its not the relaxing enjoyable experience you imagined.

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/09/2024 19:32

Yup, I want to sit with my hot choc, sip at it, read my book... not slurp it down in one, in a couple of minutes and then its all gone!

Aworldofmyown · 21/09/2024 19:36

Ww have one, the kids use it most. It does mean you can buy boxes of the chocolate as side gifts at Christmas or birthdays.
