To think The Range has made a stupid decision

CDS Superstores has announced a major change to The Range stores' entry requirements. Dog owners will no longer need to leave their pets outside or at home as stores across the UK are now completely dog-friendly.“

What’s the point of this other than to make shopping in The Range a miserable experience? Am I the only one who thinks it’s disgusting to have filthy dogs running around soft furnishings and fragile displays, potentially pissing on things? I assume people with dog allergies are just irrelevant then. Navigating the shop is already a nightmare when it’s busy, who wants dogs who have been rolling around in God knows what to be taking up the aisles? Think it’ll be online orders only from now on… Hmm

"Dogs just squat when they're ready to pee, and short of carrying a pissing dog off that spot, there's not much to be done. You can't drag them by their collar if they don't want to stop weeing. If you have a solution, please share it to help dog walkers out".

Well exactly, and this is great example of why dogs are better suited to outdoor places, not shops. Arguably, its cruel to tether them and drag them around The Range because it suits the owner rather than letting them run free in a field.

I've already said I wouldn't take mine to the range. I was just intrigued as to how you expected someone to move a peeing dog. Mines medium size but when she's planted herself and doesn't want to move it's not easy to make her move. I imagine big dogs are virtually impossible.

ShinyPebble32 · 17/09/2024 07:16

Yes, you can drag them by their collar. You are the one in control.

Drag a weeing dog by their throat? Bit cruel isn't it?

FourChimneys · 17/09/2024 08:36

I am so fed up with everywhere being dominated by bloody dogs. Yes, I appreciate some people like them but honestly, they are animals, they do not need to be in every human environment. Leave your smelly mutt at home or in the car.

The comparison to children is ridiculous. Not once did my children shit on the floor of a shop or piss on the goods. Neither did they stick their filthy noses everywhere. All things I have seen dogs do in the past few months. Seeing a lurcher piss on a rack of nightdresses in M&S was disgusting. Even worse when the assistant I reported it to just shrugged and said it would dry 🤢

I will not use cafes or restaurants which allow dogs, we take our own food and drink with us when we are out or on holiday. It saves us an absolute fortune.

Fuck me, is there anywhere dogs can’t go now? My town is overrun with them… dogs in the pub, dogs in the pharmacy, dogs in Fenwicks, I’m surprised people don’t take them to church…

Solution: carry a couple of large bottles of water with you, to pour over the dog piss so to at least dilute the filth and foul stench.

You’re welcome.

Not one I need in particular, because she'll only go on grass. Won't even pee on our own patio, only the lawn and would prefer to be in the park or the woods.

I was just curious as to what peoples expectations of it were, given it's outside and not actually on their property and dogs should be walked.

Purplecatshopaholic · 17/09/2024 08:42

I have no issue with this - I love seeing dogs in shops. Would be unlikely to take my own as too many people stress them out.

It sounds like it was on their property - i.e. their wall/fence next to their gate.

Non dog owner here but I've no issue with this. I like seeing dogs in shops, cafés, etc.

Beekeepingmum · 17/09/2024 08:47

Always avoid dog friendly places. I dislike dogs and dog owners tend to be the most entitled obnoxious people around. I'll avoid the Range from now.

OminousBirdAWing · 17/09/2024 08:48

Yeah - that'll learn 'em 😂

bofski14 · 17/09/2024 08:49

As someone with dog allergies, every day it seems the world is closing and off to me. I have just had to cancel a holiday as the "allergy friendly" hotel I booked seems that only applied to the food. Dogs are free to eat in the restaurants and roam the corridors. I can't book a meal anywhere without checking if they allow dogs and the majority now do. It's becoming such an issue that I can't even go into some shops anymore. People flippantly say "Get an epipen" or "Take an antihistamine" but why should I have to inject myself or take medications that can make me drowsy because Fido wants to sniff bedding in The Range? I've been hospitalised before and on a ventilator from dog hair. I wish people would take this more seriously as they do other allergies.

😂😂😂😂😂

Someone may find comfort in bringing their dog somewhere like a funeral in church.

If you had a relative or friend with a severe dog allergy requiring an Epipen to treat an anaphylactic reaction you might see things differently. People should be able to walk safely round large shops without having to encounter a dog.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 17/09/2024 08:56

This policy is like giving the finger to people with pet allergies and those afraid of dogs.

Having been snapped at by a border collie for walking to my back gate, pinned up against a wall by a staffie and chased by a doberman whilst delivering milk and bitten by a mongrel whilst doing my job. All whilst the owners were insisting it won't hurt you. Plus many other incidents.

I'll giving The Range a wide birth from now on.

Kitkat1523 · 17/09/2024 08:56

Doesn’t bother me one way or the other…..I don’t take my dog shopping unless I go to Cheshire oaks outlet where dogs can go in the shops except Marksies and next

Definitelyrandom · 17/09/2024 08:57

I don’t have a burning desire to take the dog shopping (though it would be handy to be able to take him into the newsagents). But we recently took ours into a number of churches on Heritage Open Days. He was welcomed in all and clearly gave a great deal of pleasure to a lot of people who were making a fuss of him. Mind you, he is very calm, the right height to be stroked easily and house (any building) trained. We were told in one church that a dog regularly came to their Sunday service (presumably with its owner!).

Elphame · 17/09/2024 08:57

I don’t enjoy shopping with my dogs and generally leave them at home if I plan a trip.

It is however handy if I’m out and about to be able to pop in somewhere to pick up a few bits and pieces. I’ve actually stopped using our nearest PO as they’ve moved into the local co op which means I can’t combine dripping off a parcel with the morning walk anymore.

It sounds like it was on their property - i.e. their wall/fence next to their gate.

She said two feet from her front gate, after talking about the vast expanse of pavement. I read that as on the pavement but near the gate.

Allfur · 17/09/2024 08:59

I doubt the range will be over run with dogs

thinkingndrinking · 17/09/2024 09:00

I despair at the 'bring your dog everywhere' culture.

I have a family member with ASD who is terrified of dogs. She used to be able to go about her life and avoid/manage flashpoints quite easily. Now almost all local cafes and increasingly more shops are dog friendly it's an absolute nightmare.

I HATE dogs in shops and eateries. Dirty hairy smelly animals - leave them outside or in your own (stinky) house.

Elphame · 17/09/2024 09:01

notafanofmarmite · 17/09/2024 08:31

It was a bit of a culture shock to me when I moved to the UK from the States and saw dogs allowed in restaurants. Only assistance dogs are allowed in such places in the USA. Otherwise it is a Health Board violation. I don’t myself have problems with dogs in pubs when the seating is outdoors, or in a pet store, etc, or if there is outdoor dining. Otherwise I am not keen….I like dogs fine, but my attitude may just be what I was used to where I came from.

I found myself having to ask my neighbours politely not to let their dog run around in my garden, and they were really offended….their view was I should fence off my driveway and have more fences (my garden is already fenced) to accommodate their dog. That’s when I knew I was in an alternative universe.

I saw plenty of dogs in supermarkets when in the US which was an equal culture shock.

HRHelpNeededPlease · 17/09/2024 09:03

It's perfectly normal to see dogs in all sorts of shops and department stores these days. I don't really see the need myself, apart from service dogs, but people do seem to like the option to do it. It doesn't offend me, but I don't see why you'd chose to do it if you didn't absolutely have to.

I guess the shops take a view on the risk that a dog will wee or foul inside the shop, or knock things over. They obviously feel it's a risk worth taking to bring extra trade in.

Personally I'd never take my dog around a big shop, she'd be a bundle of nerves. She's only familiar with our house, my car, or fields and parks! The odd occasion we've taken her into a pub or café she's not been entirely comfortable and has found it hard to lie down or relax, so a busy shop would be a nightmare. We needed to go into Oxford city centre once, when we were on holiday in the Cotswolds and we couldn't leave her for hours in the accommodation. She hated it, was completely over-stimulated, nervous of all the buses and the noise and crowds and it was stressful for all of us.

I've seen plenty of people with very relaxed dogs who seem to take it all in their stride though.

listsandbudgets · 17/09/2024 09:06

My dog if she could understand it would think this is brilliant news.... new smells, furniture to curl up on, new people to meet, lots of shelves to investigate... and maybe even some new dog toys to run about with. I have a feeling she'd also like Ikea...

I on the other hand would be a nervous wreck. She's got as much chance of going to the Range under my supervision as she has the moon

I saw someone with a dog in Next recently... what was that about!!

I do take her to pubs and pet shops but only the ones that actively encourage dogs and believe me some of them do but for the most part she's happier romping in the park or the woods or having a swim in the river followed by a bone and a long sleep.... she's a dog FFS retail therapy isn't her thing that said she does seem to show an insane urge to go into the butchers every time we pass it!!

kluesme · 17/09/2024 00:00

The amount of times I have found a dog poo on the floor in pets at home proves to me no other shops should allow dogs in

that's probably because there is a vet in there and the dog is stressed? It will happen in vets practices as well, I imagine. It's not the same as other shops.

I've never seen a poo or a wee in any shop, including PAH.

cuckooooooo · 17/09/2024 09:10

@notafanofmarmite it's ridiculous isn't it. Really wish we were more like the us in this respect
