To ask if you’ve ever become obsessed with a murder case?

I was watching a true crime podcast on YouTube and it finished and went to a random suggestion and it was a 2 minute video of a crime scene inside a subway from the 80s on an ordinary news channel.

I looked into the case and there’s nothing on it apart from a one column blurb in the newspaper at the time and the victims photo being sold on Amazon. It’s so weird .. and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Anyone else?

The murder of Jon Benette, the little pageant girl who was found dead in the family home on Christmas Day. I because obsessed with the story when I was in year 7, I'm still listening to podcasts and watch documentaries on it at 32!

I'm expecting there will be someone along shortly to say how ghoulish and disgusting we are for being interested in true crime. And I do get the sentiment- it can seem like interest equals enjoyment but that doesn't mean anyone is pleased these horrible things happen. The only people to focus criticism on are the perpetrators, not those who want to understand what happened and never, ever the victims.

Some of these cases are fascinating but that doesn't equal happy they happened. It's natural to be curious but obviously stop short at upsetting friends and family.

The Missy Bevers case, Andrew Gosden and Jon-Benet are tragedies and desperate for answers for the families. I live quite local to a case mentioned and there is some local knowledge and rumours that I guess is similar to so many of these cases.

The Delphi one I am so glad to know they have the suspect but as a pp says how did he get away with it so long and why did he do it. Is he connected to other stuff, must be.

@Marinade lovely Nora Quorin, bless her. I think I have blocked her out. My son went missing the same day I heard about her, we were also abroad on holiday. He was found safe but it terrified me and I became a bit obsessed with her but eventually forced myself to not read anything else about her. I cannot imagine how her parents cope.

The murder of Hae Min Lee and the subsequent conviction, wrongful conviction decision and reinstating of the conviction of her boyfriend at the time, Adnan Syed.

It was the topic of the first Serial series which I listened to at work and then I followed it up with a bunch of other podcast episode and series’ about it.

It’s still going on now, he was cleared in 2022 when wrongful conviction was decided then the conviction reinstated in 2023 because the victim’s brother was not given significant notice of the hearing. He’s still out of prison but a new hearing is being scheduled to decide if he the conviction is or isn’t sound so could go back to prison yet.

Not obsessed but quite interested by the Fred and Rose West murders. Especially how they got away with it despite dropping clues left right and centre. Basically they were seen as incredibly stupid people and were left to carry on, because nobody believed they were capable of what they did.

Ana Kriegel, brutally murdered by a kid. Horrific case.

Generally speaking I would say the casual reader assumes they got lost and died of exposure but plenty of people knew where they were going (taxi driver, people who saw them set off). With the clean, dry backpack being found, the cleanly severed foot and the night photos - plus the photos potentially showing they reached the summit, went a little way then went back to the summit, I don't buy it.

I am aware of the photos but I must admit that I don't understand the implications of the photos showing they reached the summit and went back? I seem to recall that a theory was that they used the flash to take the night time photos to be able to see. Could they have gone back to the summit to feel that they had better protection / sighting of anyone coming up? The fear they must have experienced it is shocking.

And it is one of those cases where the seeminly non nefarious sequence of events just unfortunately added up to something horrific. They were meant to start teaching at a school or something which was not ready? Do you think that this was orchestrated?

I hope I am not being insensitive.

I've watched the Netflix documentary way too many times and I don't really know why? I think because of all the social media she posted it feels so "real" for want of a better word.

The way he lies on camera on the afternoon of the murder, pretending he wants his daughters back when he smothered them and pushed them into an oil tank hours before. Absolute monster of a man.

Her Facebook is still open with all the videos and photos, she documented so much.

It was thanks to her best friend calling the police so early and the neighbour having a camera that proved she never left the house in her car.

Whats absolutely chilling is the advert that plays when the police, Chris and his neighbour are watching the footage, it shows a foetus, then an explosion and a skull sinking in oil.

Oh gosh how horrific for you, this must bring back awful memories. I am so glad your son was found but it must make the sadness of Nora more profound in a way as she did not have a happy ending.

Her case is so so sad. Her innocence and reliance on her parents, the fact they were on the first night of their holiday - they all add such heart breaking elements.

Claudia Lawrence case baffles me. So sad her dad died without knowing what happened to his daughter.

Have you listened to the podcast series on Claudia Lawrence, it’s fascinating I wonder what happened to her

TheTwirlyPoos · 16/09/2024 21:14

Not an unsolved case but Star Hobson. I first read about the court case when I was sat in hospital with a broken arm and I became absolutely obsessed. Read the court transcripts every day. For months I thought of her every day. It's less now but still frequently. The horror of it all.

Oh sorry, no I mean the initial theory was that they got to the end of the trail at the summit, went down the mountain on the other side and got lost down there/fell on a monkey bridge. However I read an analysis of the photos that convincingly showed they went a short distance past the summit then back to the top and then set off home from there (on the easy trail they already walked). So they shouldn't have got lost.

I don't think they took those photos. And it's a bit convenient how many potential "witnesses" are now dead.

I basically think this book is correct! (Not my book, I promise).

iamtheblcksheep · 16/09/2024 21:15

What happened to Claudia Lawrence?
Is Lucy Letby innocent?
Who broke in and murdered Jonbenet Ramsay?
Is Billy Joe Jenkins adoptive dad guilty?
Where the hell are Maddie and Ben Needham?
Did Lizzie Borden murder her dad and get away with murder?

They all live in my head rent free.

Summerx · 16/09/2024 21:15

Caylee and Casey Anthony

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 16/09/2024 21:17

Chris Watts is a monster but his mother is grim too. In interviews she still puts the blame on Shannan. Apparently she sued for the life insurance policy that he had for Shannan and the two girls through his work. So so sick.

dreamer24 · 16/09/2024 21:17

I went down a rabbit hole reading about the horrific murder of Shannan Watts and her precious babies. That had left a mark on me no other story has. Truly unimaginably heartbreaking 💔

Amdone123 · 16/09/2024 21:20

Chris Watts for me, too. Scares me that up until the murders, he was a pretty average dad. No red flags, really.
Also, Chris Coleman - same league - though in his mind, he had something to 'lose ' - his job, working for a nut job.
So scary to think they live amongst us.
Jonbenet - because had the police done their job, we'd have answers.

raspberriez · 16/09/2024 21:24

Yes, only the unsolved ones though. I do listen to podcasts now and then. Same with missing person cases that remain a mystery. I’m intrigued by the ones that are particularly frustrating (Claudia Lawrence, Andrew Gosden, jonbenet and many more) because I can’t understand how they’ve ended up unsolved.

Marinade · 16/09/2024 21:24

Oh wow I did not realise that the photos had been analysed to support the theory that they had set off back on their original trail after reaching the summit. That does look very very suspicous. I will definitely read this book thank you.

Yes I got really obsessed with Tyrell Peterson case, oh it was so awful. I just couldn't stop thinking about this poor boy.
Don't look it up if things around children being murdered will really upset you. I know these things will but this is a really bad one

The disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh. No one will ever know I don’t think..

Or who ‘Mr Kipper’ really was.

Suzy Lamplugh knew Steve Wright, the serial killer who preyed on women in Ipswich. They worked together on QE2. I have wondered before why we haven't heard much about this link. Just seems odd that Suzy happened to have two different deranged murderers in her life.

Asha degree baffles me 😔

Big breakthrough in this case happening at the moment with DNA evidence

Amdone123 · 16/09/2024 21:26

Star Hobson, too. I read at the time that her family members thought she ' seemed depressed '.
I can not ascertain that - she was a bloody baby.
I'd be right on the case if any of my nieces or nephews ' seemed depressed '.
Heartbreaking x

As a child, the kidnapping and death of Lesley Whittle really affected me. I was 9 or 10.
I’d hear it on the news at teatime and didn’t realise how much it was scaring me. I’d wake up in the night and sit up in bed, put my light on and read one of my famous five books til it got light. This went on for months.

The killings that I can’t get out of my head in recent years are the Delphi murders.
Just gone over the thread and see others have mentioned this too.
