To ask if you’ve ever become obsessed with a murder case?

I was watching a true crime podcast on YouTube and it finished and went to a random suggestion and it was a 2 minute video of a crime scene inside a subway from the 80s on an ordinary news channel.

I looked into the case and there’s nothing on it apart from a one column blurb in the newspaper at the time and the victims photo being sold on Amazon. It’s so weird .. and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Anyone else?

Luke Mitchell and Jodi Jones. Partly because v local to me

Jon Benet Ramsay

Chris Watts. You could tell Shannan was a wonderful mother. I could totally see her on here posting about his infidelity and trying to keep her marriage together.

The staircase one where he said an eagle did it.

I only lived in York for a year, but you're right, there was a lot of building work going on at the time, all over the city.
And l agree, the impression the police gave of her tainted the case (and l speak as ex police) - I suspect gave people a very skewed idea of the person she was. If it had been a man, that would either never have been mentioned, or only very briefly. It would never have impacted the investigation the way it did.
Also, her mother said that on the photo they used initially, her hair colour was wrong. I wonder who provided that photograph?
Purely my take on it, but l wonder if she was actually walking to work along Melrosegate - as you said there were at least two vehicles seen either stopping or stationary near her home around the time she'd be leaving for work which have never been traced. And she'd been picked up on the post office CCTV the afternoon before, so if she was, she never got that far, because she wasn't seen on the footage of the next morning when she disappeared..
I suspect either someone she knew offered her a lift, or she was snatched on the street near her house. I still think someone known to her was involved, though.

Yes,that photo

I knew people who knew people, who knew her who said that photo was wrong-her own mother said it was wrong but it took months to get the right photo out

It's never been said who provided that picture

If someone goes missing, you'd get an up to date one at least

I have a recent (ish) photo which shows me as long and dark haired but I'm now shorter haired and grey (I grew out the hair dye) but my partner would be telling the police about my change of appearance-they could easily find a cctv still of me

She would have had come out of her house, and turn right to walk down heworth road, past the shops/church,turn right up melrosegate, past the post office, past the shell garage,on Hull Road, past my parents street and onto the uni grounds

For some reason,I've seen documentaries that seem to think she went out of her front door and turned left-down heworth Road and either back round onto melrosegate or almost into town

That wouldn't have made sense either-thats miles out of her way

(I could be mistaken, but that's what the documentaries seem to think)

My father came out of his street, down melrosegate, past the post office, over the bridge/past the other church with the blue jesus statue and straight down the road,to the church,to which he turned off the other way to go to ds's flat

He didn't see her-he saw nobody at all on foot (he would have remembered as its unusual for a lone female to be walking at that time)

No cctv of her walking past the post office-i knew the postmaster,Gary, very well-nice chap but nothing on either side of the street but she was caught on it the day before, posting a letter

Why did it take 5/6 years to interview my ex and his colleagues?I mean he and the other men where in her street at around the time she left for work

Ditto the back alley

There is that one missing link to the jigsaw-she didn't make it much further than her front door-she either got a lift or was dragged away somewhere between her house and the church (which isn't far at all,a few minutes at best-ive walked it regularly)

But who?

I read that her best mate is now married to the man they think did it

They just can't prove it

Thistooshallpass24 · 17/09/2024 12:57

I'm sure the Lawrence family would be delighted by all the wonderful suggestions on here.

TheGreatIndoors · 17/09/2024 12:58

@AGirlInACountrySong pls tell us more about the black museum

TheGreatIndoors · 17/09/2024 12:59

I also can confirm the ch5 documentary on Luke Mitchell was crap and he is guilty as sin. Dalkeith is a pretty small town. We all know the police and lawyers who were involved.

Pinkchicken75 · 17/09/2024 13:01

yes - The Staircase ,the drama was good ,but his documentary was something else. still on Netflix i believe
Also Gill Dando
Madeleine Mcann

You're 100% right about the 'turning left' thing, that's a very long way round! I've never noticed that on any of the documentaries l've seen, l'll have to watch them again.

The most direct route, the one l drove, would be to turn right out as she came out of the house, past the Nags Head, past the church, and down onto Melrosegate.
I used to have some good chats with the guy in the post office, not about Claudia, (if it's the same one, the one l talked to had a motorbike?) because at the time l'd recently moved to York and l was selling a lot of stuff on ebay, so l was in there quite regularly, and he remarked on my accent, as l was clearly not local to the area.
I didn't know that about her friend's husband, though! Wow!

The Idaho 4 killings have really been baffling to me

Definitely.

Like I’m sure the police tried to shrug it off as not a huge case until it gained huge traction online. Also I’m sure a housemate that survived came out of their room and saw the murderer with the knife and just ran back to their room and didn’t do anything until the morning .. like fair enough reaction but surely their phone would be in that room so why not call 911?

And they torn the house down before the trial when the jurors would have actually gone to view it. Such a crazy and sad case.

Yes, the Idaho killings were very odd. Has the accused man had his trial yet and been sentenced? I haven't been following it since it happened.

I may have got the wrong impression about the route but if they where right,it was miles out of the way
Straight up melrosegate would have been the way I would have gone (I'm lazy so will always walk the direct route)
Yes-thats the postmaster, lovely fella, had lots of chats myself with him about motorbikes as my father is a biker
I read somewhere that her mate had married the main suspect and had it confirmed through friends
The nags used to be a lovely pub (not Drank in there for many years-i was 16/17 when I did and am cough a few years and a few kids older now)
I remember them having barking, large dogs on the roof
It just doesn't make sense-if she'd walked past my father,he would have seen her,but he turned off just before he got to her street-she didn't walk up melrosegate-or not far up that street
She knew who killed her-she would have kicked off if she'd not known who's car she was dragged into
It's a built up area-someone would have heard screams-i have where I live and I live in a quiet area

Getitwright · 17/09/2024 13:36

I grew up in the midst of one. The Yorkshire Ripper. I was a young teenager, grew up during his active years. All my age group were wary, we never went anywhere alone, parents were constantly on alert, and don’t forget this was well before mobile phones to help keep you safe, and police misogyny was rife. He was finally caught seven miles from my home. The sigh of relief was huge.

Noah Donohoe in Belfast.

I’ve been obsessed with loads of murder cases. The most recent one is the Watts murders, because I also have two little girls, who were born within a few years of Bella and CeCe. (My older one was born after Bella but before CeCe, and my younger one was born in 2018 and would have been one grade ahead of Nico in school.) My daughters even like the same TV shows; there are pictures of the Watts girls wearing clothes with Sofia the First and My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. I’m also obsessed with the case because it’s so bizarre how Chris Watts seems to have been so passive his whole life until he killed his family.

katseyes7 · 17/09/2024 13:38

It is indeed a built up area, and it would've been quiet at that time of the morning, there are bits with no housing (is there a park or green space on one or both sides part way down the main road?) but I imagine any sound (particularly shouting or screaming) would have carried to the houses because it'd be so quiet with very little traffic noise?
By the way l've sent you a private message, if you haven't seen it, l hope you don't mind, but l'm finding it very interesting.... certainly food for thought.

There is a lot of green areas-tang hall park/the green that tang hall school uses for pe (it's at the start of melrosegate),the church grounds-its very built up
Sound carries-i live behind a school and can hear the kids-even if they are at the other side-I live a mile or so away from a train station and a park
I can hear both late at night/early morning when it's quiet

Thank you for your message-ill read it now

The Black Museum had a "visiting exhibition" at The Museum of London a few years ago and Dh & I were invited to the opening. (We're not police). It was fascinating and even though I've read about classic and modern true crime for a long time most of the exhibits were very disturbing.

They will be the green spaces/park l'm thinking of, it was a long time ago, 2012-2013, as l said, l only lived in York for a year, and l was always in the car along that road, so l wasn't entirely sure.
I remember driving home from work one night after a 9pm finish, it was late November and one particular bit seemed very dark, and a kid on a bike, dressed completely in dark clothing with no lights on the bike shot across the road in front of me. Scared the life out of me, thank goodness l had good brakes and good reflexes!

Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman

Yes I always feel their deaths are overshadowed by OJ Simpson which is upsetting. Especially Ron Goldman. Similarly with Reeva Steenkamp and Pistorius

A case I think about a lot is Melanie McGuire convicted of killing her husband and discussed in the Direct Appeal podcast.

*Getitwright *I remember the Yorkshire Ripper case very well, l'm from the North East (North of Newcastle) but my best friend is a Yorkshire lass, and when we went out for the evening where she lived her parents were very strict about us staying in groups, not letting anyone go home on their own, and dads or brothers meeting us to go home.
It was very scary at the time, we were young and felt very vulnerable.
