Are you glad you voted Labour ?

Noangelbuthavingfun · 16/09/2024 18:14

Sir Keir is firmly in his new seat and appears to be making waves... winter fuel, VAT on private school fees, UEFA watchdog type scenario, budgets... increase in CGT, 20% increase for Jr doctors, immigration learnings from Italy to pay other countries to take Immigrants and that's only what I briefly followed.
So my question is - are you still glad you voted Labour, or that they are in Power if you didn't? And what if you are not happy anymore - why ?
I'm on the fence so trying to be objective ;-)

I voted green but am glad Labour got in.

I agree with all they have done so far. Especially VAT on fees and winter fuel.

What did people think would happen?

urbanbuddha · 16/09/2024 22:32

@BellaBlythe

I’ve never filled it in myself so I can’t be specific.

Pension Credit have a phone line - 0800 99 1234 - I’d start there.

Then if you need more help

Age UK has a helpline

or make an appointment with your local Citizens Advice who should be able to help.

I didn’t vote Labour but my family did & a fair few of my friends. Most are saying they regret it.

I will say, my local MP is beyond awful, just stonewalls everyone & just ignores everyone’s questions!

MellersSmellers · 16/09/2024 22:36

Yes
Most of the things you mention haven't happened yet so are speculation at this stage.

I think people thought that Labour would be honest and carry out their promises. Not lie, grift and take the piss with their outrageous hypocrisy.

Madameblanc · 16/09/2024 22:40

Voted lib dem but still very pleased to have Labour. The only fly in the ointment for me is the VAT on school fees, which I completely disagree with, but that aside, on the whole, I think the country will be in a better place.

Are you in Clacton?

MarvellousMable · 16/09/2024 23:10

I’m really looking forward to the budget on 30th October, when they allegedly go after their supporters ‘with the broadest shoulders’, I.e. their billionaire donors (who since July have been doing share class switches in the offshore funds they are invested in avoid the Labour’s CGT raid 😂).

But it won’t be the billionaires who are hit - the Government can’t touch the offshore ones of the ilk of Sir & Lady Green who could pull their dividends and interest payments out of the UK tax free to Monaco. Unless they bring in a US and Spanish style tax system on dividends, interest and capital gains. But they won’t as it will penalise Labour’s pay masters.

Similarly Comrade Tony with his huge BTL portfolio wrapped up in a corporation. He’s protected. They’ll be going after the little landlord (pleb) who has kept the rent the same since 2013 but owns it in his or her own name. Then people complain rents are rocketing. You can thank George Osborne for that one - Schedule 24 Finance Act 2015…

Elyalbert · 16/09/2024 23:12

Yes. I don’t agree with everything they’ve done/look like they’re going to do, but we couldn’t go on as we were. The Conservatives had to go. I feel like we have a sensible, adult government again and it’s been a breath of fresh air frankly.

What year did your LL increase your rent?

Give it a rest. Show me where the imaginary black hole is and I’ll apologise.

Anyway! I’m having a great time. My parents are vastly wealthy. They don’t give a toss if they get the WFA or not. There’s also no inheritance tax on farmland so I don’t have to worry about paying that later down the line. Clever people hide their money well. I can afford the increase in VAT on school fees and I live in a nice rural area where illegals don’t exist.

They can do what they like. It just doesn’t affect me or my family.

Meanwhile the poor squeezed middle continues to be bled dry while the poor pensioners that live just above the pension credit threshold will really miss that £200.

At least the wife looks good in all her free clothes hey.

Hopefully they will take action to stop the greedy selfish people from hiding their money so that they pay their fair share of tax.

Sadly, you can't legislate to make people decent human beings, but you can at least try to close some of the loopholes.

Yes.
The Tories were far, far worse.
They made the mess that Labour have to clean up.

Agree.

Yeah, as a dyed in the wool Tory I’m looking forward to some significant housing reform that puts an end to small BTL landlords and introduces proper regulation for larger professional landlords.

No sensible person thinks we can go on with the rented housing market as it is. Or the leasehold system. If Labour can reform these, then good.

(Not that the Labour mouldy ant farmer landlord is any great advertisement for Labour housing practice in action.)

Pension Credits. I have no knowledge of this benefit, because no one in family of that age. So please help me. It seems many who are eligible do not apply.
It is reported that to apply the form has 240 questions that need to be answered.
Is this correct and what other help would they get? It seems hard work!

People can apply by a phone call, they don't need to do an online application. There probably are 240 questions on the form but many of them , for many people will be for example if you tick no then skip to question 10 or whatever. So for example it asks things like does anyone else live with you - if that's a no then skip six questions, but if you have five other people in the household then you are going to need to put those five people .
I have helped quite a few people to make applications and rarely has anyone needed to answer 240 questions ! they need details of bank accounts and savings accounts as it's a means tested benefit. Many claims will be very straightforward, some need more information. If you had just your state pension, lived alone and no savings it would be a very straightforward claim. Start adding in partners, or wanting to claim sdp elements or carers elements for each other and both have private pensions and numerous small savings accounts then of course the claim is going to be more complex.
People often don't claim because they don't want their bank accounts scrutinized !
And if it is a complex application and older people really can't cope with it , the DWP will even send round a home visiting representative to do the claim for them. This is why I don't understand the media harping on about how difficult it is for people to make a pension credit claim.

TootieeFruitiee · 16/09/2024 23:30

Yea I’m happy I voted Labour. I think it will take 10 years to repair the mess left by the conservatives

LaurieFairyCake · 16/09/2024 18:26

Yes, fantastic start - keep going

Given the amount people in the Uk buy from Amazon can we start taxing them properly please

Taking a winter fuel payment away from elderly people is a 'fantastic start'?!?

Wow, this country really is fucked...

MarvellousMable · 16/09/2024 23:37

urbanbuddha · 16/09/2024 23:24

Earlier this year.

Sorry about what Tory George did to cause ‘tenant tax’ and for the increase in interest rates which have only increased this tax. Then add on rocketing insurance costs plus selective licensing. Plus general inflation on all costs related to repairs, maintenance and upgrades. EPC upgrade requirements add further (but appreciate are much needed).

Can we just go back to 1997 when there was none of this nonsense and rents were reasonable?!

As soon as any Government get involved in any of this stuff, they screw it up for the most vulnerable.

Labour said that cutting winter fuel allowance would kill 4000 pensioners about a year ago. I really hope, given they've done away with it, they got their figures wrong and they were lying just to stick one to the Tories.

Cutting the winter fuel allowance will KILL 4000 pensioners a year. But it seems they're going ahead with it anyway...

Why would you want a larger corporate landlord to be in control of any repairs that a tenant might need?

I have the misfortune of having a Labour run council as my landlord and they are an utter shower of uselessness.
