To wear nice trainers to low key wedding

Going to a friend's wedding in a few weeks. The couple are mid 50s/60ish. Ceremony at registry office followed by lunch in a local restaurant.
I cannot wear heels anymore due to weak ankles and dodgy feet. I have smartish flatform trainers which would go well with wide leg trousers and they would be mostly covered. Can't afford to buy new shoes. I do have some beautiful wedge heel brogues but they are quite high. WIBU to wear the flats?

Of course not. If it were my wedding I'd want you to be comfortable. Honestly no one will notice and you'll have a much better time if you can still walk at the end of the night!

cestlavielife · 15/09/2024 18:25

What's the worst that could happen if you wear clean trainers?
If anyone remarks on it just say it's for your dodgy ankles.

Tiegs · 15/09/2024 18:25

It's fine to wear trainers no one is looking at your feet as long your comfortable it doesn't matter

SherlockHolmess · 15/09/2024 18:29

Could you post a picture or link?

I have to say at my wedding there was no dress code and it was very relaxed (I wore flip flops!) but most people did get into the spirit of it and wore nice dresses etc with flat sandals or wedges.

There were a couple of adults in trainers and they did stand out and it looked a bit off. Kids wore them and it looked alright.

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 18:29

Thank you! I've got rid of a load of beautiful high heels this year because I'll never wear them again. I can def style my outfit around my decent chunky trainers 😊

Actually I've just remembered I also have them in gold 😊

The black ones are a different model and have a white stripe on the side

For me, trainers aren't appropriate for a wedding, even a relaxed one. It is up to you though an what you think will be acceptable at the wedding you're going to. I'd probably just wear something like an ankle boot in your case, comfy but smart. Sainsbury's/Tescos often do some that are really good value, or you may be able to get some second hand.

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 18:44

@HamSad tbh my feet will be under the table mostly at lunch so you're right hardly anyone will notice. Plus I'm pretty sure the bride and groom won't give two hoots about my footwear. The last wedding I went to was SIL about 5 years ago and I suffered all day in gorgeous but uncomfortable heels 🤣

Wear the gold! They’ll be fine.

CuppaWhiteTea · 15/09/2024 18:46

If I had dodgy ankles and no money for new shoes, and I was wearing wide-leg trousers, I would 100% wear those in gold to a low-key relaxed wedding.

dimples76 · 15/09/2024 18:46

I have been to a wedding wearing ugly trainers and a very long skirt when I was recovering from ankle surgery. As my podiatrist says your health needs to come first.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 15/09/2024 18:47

The choice isn't either heels or trainers. There are PLENTY of smart flat shoes / boots you can choose from. I think trainers are completely inappropriate tbh.

Alwaysanotherwine · 15/09/2024 18:47

i’d be more inclined to wear gold than black

the black seem more like street wear but if you can’t see them i wouldn’t worry

bit for me even low key wouldn’t mean trainers but you know your friend group 🙂

The OP has already said she can't afford to buy new shoes. I'm assuming these are the best option she has.

I think you'll be fine OP. We had a similar type of wedding and I couldn't tell you what a single one of my guests wore on their feet!

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 18:51

@ChildrenOfTheQuorn that is the choice I have in my shoe cupboard. As I said I can't afford to buy new and very hard to buy second hand as I'm in between sizes.

I do have some flat white boots which are similar to DMs so they are also an option.

@Alwaysanotherwine yes I agree the gold would be better than black for the reason you stated 😊

JengaNonConfirming · 15/09/2024 18:57

@Hillbilly I had a very low-key wedding about 18 months ago and I couldn't tell you what anyone wore on their feet and not did I care! The gold are lovely, wear them and be comfy 😄

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 18:57

Thank you to everyone who has said comfort over protocol! ❤️❤️❤️

Mine was quite a posh wedding, if someone had come in smart trainers I wouldn’t have cared!! I probably wouldn’t have even noticed to be honest!
But my Moro has always been wear what makes you comfortable…. I’d hate someone to be uncomfortable or in pain on my wedding day!!
My BIL wore sunglasses, everyone was moaning at him to take them off for the photos… (his eyes are sensitive to the light)… I told everyone just to let him be… the photos look fine with him in his sun glasses, it is who he is!

@Longma interestingly I went to the ballet just after Covid and was amazed to see a vast proportion of the women in trainers with their pretty summer dresses.

Do it! It's not the 1950s, so there's no place for rigid dress codes at parties anymore.

TortillasAndSalsa · 15/09/2024 19:15

Wear the trainers and be comfortable. I found a gorgeous pair of trainers that I wore for my wedding and everyone said what a good idea so I don't get sore feet lol
