To wear nice trainers to low key wedding

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 18:23

Going to a friend's wedding in a few weeks. The couple are mid 50s/60ish. Ceremony at registry office followed by lunch in a local restaurant.
I cannot wear heels anymore due to weak ankles and dodgy feet. I have smartish flatform trainers which would go well with wide leg trousers and they would be mostly covered. Can't afford to buy new shoes. I do have some beautiful wedge heel brogues but they are quite high. WIBU to wear the flats?

In my book, the gold ones are very smart! You'll look lovely and no-one will be looking or judging. Have a lovely time!

NeedToChangeName · 15/09/2024 19:19

I wouldn't think trainers are suitable for a wedding, but you seem to have made up your mind already, so I'm not sure why you started this thread TBH

MouseofCommons · 15/09/2024 19:22

Yanbu. Be comfortable and modern. I realised recently I only own trainers (work in an office).

RightAngIe · 15/09/2024 19:23

They look fine. Id rather have a friend feeling comfortable at my wedding then worry about what they are wearing on their feet.

angellinaballerina7 · 15/09/2024 19:24

Any chance of changing into flats after the ceremony? If you’ve got some extra accessories, maybe add those if not.

Arrivapercy · 15/09/2024 19:25

Omg even if there were trainers you could describe as "smartish" those aren't.

You absolutely cannot wear those. Do you have nothing else at all flat? Can you stretch to purchasing some very cheap ballet pump type things? Those would look smarter than the type of thing you posted a picture of

Arrivapercy · 15/09/2024 19:26

Platform trainers are the opposite of "very smart"

SwedishEdith · 15/09/2024 19:26

The gold ones are fine.

NerrSnerr · 15/09/2024 19:26

I genuinely didn't care what anyone wore to my wedding. It was fairly traditional in a hotel but I'd rather have a friend comfortable in a tracksuit than uncomfortable in a dress etc. I had friends who had small kids coming- I told them that if they had bridesmaids/ page boy outfits from other weddings that still fit they can wear those or just normal clothes and anything in between.

I wanted my wedding guests to look like themselves in photos. It's the people I want to remember, not the outfit.

Is it just your opinion that the OP cannot wear them or is there a law somewhere.

They'd have been fine and my wedding and I think most people I know. They're just shoes. You invite the guest for the person they are (I assume) so don't know why some shiny trainers would take away from that.

Parker231 · 15/09/2024 19:32

White trainers are my go to footwear now - weddings, theatre, the races, office, holidays - can’t imagine not wearing them almost every day now. Friends and family are similar.

OP - they are totally suitable for a wedding - enjoy yourself!

Boxoo · 15/09/2024 19:33

I got married a couple of years ago and it was a moderately posh venue. I still wouldn't have cared if someone wore trainers. To be honest someone might have I don't think I would have noticed!

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 19:35

@NeedToChangeName I haven't decided that's why I posted. As I said I have high wedges but they are not good for my feet any more

@Arrivapercy ballet flats are the worst shoes for my flat feet 🤣

Wear them! I’m going to a black tie wedding in a couple of weeks and am going to be in trainers with my evening dress as I’m post op on crutches and can’t manage anything else on my feet!

I refreshingly pleased that I really couldn’t give a shit.

Hufflemuff · 15/09/2024 19:37

I love the gold ones. I think they will look great. Just dress it up with a nice top and some jewelry and do nice makeup.

Heels are on there way out anyway. The young-uns are all in flats on a night out... don't ask me why I know that, its too much of an embarrassing story hahaha.

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 19:38

@Arrivapercy I didn't say they were "very smart" just "smartish" 🤔

Indianajet · 15/09/2024 19:39

Of course you can wear them - I can only wear trainers these days due to problems with my joints. I wear them with trousers or dresses to any and all occasions.

Berlinlover · 15/09/2024 19:39

If I ruled the world trainers and flats would be the only footwear in existence.

nokidshere · 15/09/2024 19:43

There were a couple of adults in trainers and they did stand out and it looked a bit off.

You wore flip flops but thought trainers 'were a bit off'? How bizarre can you get?

OP wear whatever you like on your feet.

friendlycat · 15/09/2024 19:43

The gold ones are fabulous. Yes wear them.

HaddawayAndShite · 15/09/2024 19:44

Ballet flats are absolutely terrible for your feet, and fuck ugly too. I can't believe anyone would suggest wearing them over trainers blergh. Wear the trainers, life is too short to put yourself in physical pain for a stupid wedding. I worse crocs at mine 😂 as did my bridesmaids and half the guests. It was a fantastic day and not marred in the slightest bit people's fashion choices.

girlofsandwich · 15/09/2024 19:44

I think anyone reasonable would be happy for their guests to be comfortable! It certainly would be the last thing on my mind if it was my wedding, or if I was a fellow guest. Going to a wedding can be such an expense as it is, it would be ridiculous to spend money on new shoes you'll likely wear once, when nobody else will care. The trainers would be lovely with a summer dress, enjoy!

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 15/09/2024 18:47

The choice isn't either heels or trainers. There are PLENTY of smart flat shoes / boots you can choose from. I think trainers are completely inappropriate tbh.

Agree

samanthablues · 15/09/2024 19:47

i bought some new very smart flats on vinted for 5 pounds, it’s another option if you think trainers will gather too much attention?

girlofsandwich · 15/09/2024 19:48

I forgot to say, every wedding I've been at has ended up with bride, bridesmaids and guests in trainers or flip flops by the end of the night so I wouldn't give it a second though 😂
