To wear nice trainers to low key wedding

Going to a friend's wedding in a few weeks. The couple are mid 50s/60ish. Ceremony at registry office followed by lunch in a local restaurant.
I cannot wear heels anymore due to weak ankles and dodgy feet. I have smartish flatform trainers which would go well with wide leg trousers and they would be mostly covered. Can't afford to buy new shoes. I do have some beautiful wedge heel brogues but they are quite high. WIBU to wear the flats?

Gold trainers would be fine, maybe you could jazz them up with some funky laces?

Itsallsostressful · 15/09/2024 19:50

I'd say defo wear the gold ones !!! Defo wouldn't be wearing ballet pumps !

PashaMinaMio · 15/09/2024 19:50

I’m of a generation which would prefer guests not to wear trainers but your gold ones will probably look ok so long as your trousers are a complimentary length.

For example, not too short showing ankle flesh and certainly not so long that they concertina around your ankles and drag on the ground at the heel.

Check out the look in advance, in a full length mirror.

Alternatively I could wear my 19yr olds denim boots which she bought from eBay and wore to her double denim themed birthday party 🤣 except they are 3 sizes too small 😫

@HaveYouSeenRain I'm sure there are but as I mentioned in the OP I cannot afford to buy new shoes.

@PashaMinaMio I have a pair of beautiful Hobbs wide leg trousers and they sit perfectly with the trainers length wise.

I have great jewellery, bag and coat so after all the wonderful responses I'll go with the gold shoes.

I would be delighted if you wore trainers to my wedding. Think people generally look far better in clean well cut clothing suited to their shape and style than folk squeezing themselves into generic 'wedding outfits' with painful looking heeled shoes that they can't walk in

niadainud · 15/09/2024 20:10

I've seen people at weddings dressed for going to the beach (flip flops, etc.) and someone at a funeral recently dressed for going on a hike (fleece and hiking boots). I will admit to rolling my eyes and wondering why they couldn't step outside their comfort zone for one day and wear something a little more appropriate to the occasion. Ditto women who make a point of never wearing make up, even to their own wedding, like it's some sort of virtue.

Why would someone who doesn’t wear makeup, wear it for their wedding?

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 15/09/2024 20:14

I think unobtrusive trainers maybe but those huge chunky white soles are awful. I hate that look with a maxi dress in summer (with obligatory denim jacket of course) and think they're very very inelegant. Sorry.

I don't normally wear a lacy white dress with a train and a veil, but I would if I were getting married.

Surely there are all sorts of things people might do, or wear, for a particular special occasion that they wouldn't normally do/wear.

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 20:21

@AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe not going to be worn with summer dress and denim jacket. Worn with smart wide leg trousers that practically cover the shoes 😊

@niadainud my best friend wore a beautiful cream satin dress with cream platform DMs for her own wedding earlier this year. She looked amazing. No lacy dress or veil required 🤣

Oh I know, it's just that even the maxi dress look, which they're most commonly worn with, isn't great. To a wedding, definite no for me.

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 15/09/2024 20:24

It does really depend on the wedding. My daughter’s wedding - she, the bridesmaid and several of the guests wore trainers and all looked great. Her cousin’s wedding the following year - similar. I was seriously considering a gold pair for another cousin’s wedding (other side of the family) this year but lost my nerve. Good job too as all the women were in high heels. I was already pushing it by not wearing makeup (I don’t) when everyone else was heavily had up but the trainers would definitely have been a faux pas.

TianasBayou · 15/09/2024 20:30

You will look cool. I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Nat6999 · 15/09/2024 20:31

I went to ds wedding in nice box fresh trainers, like you I can't walk in heels.

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 20:33

@alongtimeagoandfaraway those weddings sound great! The marrying couple are quite eclectic in style. She loves vintage 50s style and he's a suit and trainers kinda guy. We're all in our late 50s and I know my style too. I love to dress up for occasions that warrant it and have some lovely pieces of clothing and def think I can style it out with trainers 😊

At our wedding, the most glamorous guest was wearing wellies.

Nat6999 · 15/09/2024 20:35

As soon as I got to my reception when I got married I put my trainers on as my feet were killing me, nobody could see them under my dress.

I'm sure she looked fantastic. I should also imagine that she doesn't typically go around wearing a cream satin dress and cream platform DMs!

StormingNorman · 15/09/2024 20:56

The gold will be lovely!

I’m more puzzled by brides who make themselves look completely different to normal for their wedding 🤷‍♀️.

Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 21:13

@niadainud the cream satin dress not so much but the platform DMs are a regular feature 😊

OP posts:
Hillbilly · 15/09/2024 21:16

@mambojambodothetango I love that and if I were ever to marry again it would be on a campsite with absolutely no dress code 😊
