I just think it’s gross… we don’t do that as adults!!!

Er, flannels, dusters, old towel for car windscreen, teatowels, hand towels, those microfiber cloths for wiping down kitchen and everywhere else.

All washable and reusable in my house.

Actually, you can buy washable toilet wipes for adults. I used washable wipes for my kids when they were babies. Just for wee not poo. Wasn’t gross I promise you.

MagdaLenor · 15/09/2024 20:43

I'm just wondering how much stuff these people throw away? Everything that gets a bodily fluid on it?

Zanatdy · 15/09/2024 20:43

I used them for my kids when they were babies. And cloth nappies, nothing wrong with using them.

User2123 · 15/09/2024 20:46

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. Do you throw away baby clothes if they have a poonami? Or if a potty training toddler has a poo accident? We have used reusable wipes with all of our DC, and cloth nappies. They go in the washing machine on a normal 40 degree wash and come out smelling clean and fresh.

If anything is disgusting it's disposable nappies and wipes. They are terrible for the environment, those nappies will still be sitting in landfill long after the baby has grown up and died of old age.

It really didn’t feel like extra work. Use wipes, put in washing machine with other washing, take them out, put in box ready for the next use. Didn’t even dry them etc.

bakewellbride · 15/09/2024 20:48

No I don't think it's gross at all. I used cloth nappies and wipes for both my children. It was an absolute breeze and all very hygienic.

The bamboo ones we have for hands and faces are amazing. So soft and lovely, have stood the test of time. My eldest is now 6 and uses them occasionally!

Sadly team reusable is the minority and attitudes should be changing really. If it was normalised in society people wouldn't be so weird about it.

How on earth is washing items in hot water, with a detergent, unhygienic?!

I refer you to the long, long, thread on washing tea towels with underwear!

Oh dear lord, I don't think I can face that!

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 15/09/2024 20:49

Reusable nappies, wipes, makeup remover cloths and sanitary towels. We still use flannels in the shower too.

In our case DH stuck the wash on at 5 a.m. on his way to work and I'd stick it on the line/drier depending on weather when I'd had breakfast.

Bignanna · 15/09/2024 20:49

justasking111 · 15/09/2024 20:11

Can you still get napisan?

I still buy Milton's for cleaning out the fridge.

Yes you can!

I’m with you OP. And funny how many of these planet saving ideas end up generating more work for women. I’ve not yet seen the idea that has men washing shitty cloths.

Why is it assumed it's the woman doing the washing?

We use reusable wipes. And nappies. My husband usually puts them on to wash and hangs them out.
'Normal' wipes are shit. Bad for the environment and bad at cleaning babies bums! I've yet to meet someone who's used reusable wipes and gone back to plastic ones. They are much much better.

JG24 · 15/09/2024 20:51

Can someone let me know how they wash the baby's reusable wipes. Do they go into a bucket of water then into the washing machine
If there is lots of poo on them do you try and get that off first somehow or just hope the bucket of water does the trick
Also how do you clean the bucket? Sorry if I sound clueless! I am!

We should be though OP, it's much better for the planet. We just want convenience all the time now, fuck the planet, we'll all be long gone when it burns.......that seems to be the attitude people have.
I use reusable sanitary towels and they are so much comfier than the throw aways made from really soft material, the chemicals in the throwaway ones aren't great for you either apparently. Obviously not great when you're on the go but I work from home so it suits me.

Ponderingwindow · 15/09/2024 20:55

We had a spray hose hooked up to our toilet water line so we could rinse off any particularly bad ones.

we used a dry pail

had enough nappies and wipes to wash every 2-3 days. Just used the sanitary cycle.

Sun eliminates stains

bakewellbride · 15/09/2024 20:58

@JG24

The nappies and wipes went in a lidded bucket that had a mesh bag inside but nothing else, no water or anything.

Once bucket got full, lift mesh bag out and chuck in machine. So you don't even need to touch any wipes or anything.

Quick spray of bucket with cleaning spray then wipe with special nappy bucket cleaning cloth. Add cloth to washing machine. Put fresh clean mesh bag in bucket so the bucket is good to go again.

Wash at 40 degrees with powder.

The above literally took me 3 mins.

And I never recall any actual poo being on the wipes so that was never really an issue.

The poo went in either a disposable liner which got binned or a fleece liner- in which case I just tipped the poo down the toilet. Very occasionally binned a cloth nappy if it was very pooey and I didn't feel it could be salvaged.

That is what I did. Into a bucket and then wash when there was a load. There were nappies in there too though.

Then I would either soak in water with a bit of tea tree oil (I didn't even use Napisan) or sometimes just dry into the bucket.

I just cut up some old Terry clothes and flannels to use as the wipes. I would also make up a chamomile tea and soak the wipes in this. I don't even know now why I used chamomile as I don't remember many bum rashes at all. My DC are 25 and 22 now, so it was a while back.

I still have the nappies which have come in handy for all sorts. They were Bambino Mio and I remember getting a subsidy from the council to buy them.

They have most certainly paid for themselves over and over.

You know there's no law.against men putting them in a washing machine and turning it.on, don't you?

ghostyslovesheets · 15/09/2024 21:05

I know it's shocking OP but I use napkins to wipe my face after eating, cotton pads for face cleaning and period pants and they ALL go in the wash together - no one has died yet - because washing things makes them clean - who knew

suburburban · 15/09/2024 21:08

I remember my dd using these on dgd. Think she had a box for them and a dirty bag

Cazziebo · 15/09/2024 21:09

DD1 is now 34 and I still use her nappies for cleaning, dusting, face cloths etc! They are invincible.

When my DCs were young, I didn't have a car and it was impossible to carry disposables (not vacuum packed in the early 90s) home with a pram and groceries. I'm not sure wet wipes were widely available then.

Neither DC caught anything terrible from the lack of wet wipes.

Never needed a bucket to sit with them in myself - stuff went down the toilet, flush whilst holding very tightly onto the end for a rinse, straight into washing machine already loaded with powder, machine went on by the evening with babygros, vests, flannels, teatowels/floorcloths and a bathtowel or two that had residual emollient or other Psoriasis treatments on them to make up the load. Open up the machine in the morning to hang up, whole cycle started again. Switch out the towels for bedlinen every other day (3 beds, one set on Tuesday, one Thursday, one Saturday)

Forgot to say OP I not only use reusable nappies... I bought them all... SECONDHAND 😁😬.
Saved hundreds

EllyGi · 15/09/2024 21:36

Ew. No. This is where I draw the line 🤣 would never use reusable wipes absolutely unhygienic and gross.
