To think it’s unprofessional to deliver stuff with a lit cigarette in your mouth?

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I know this is proper pearl clutching.

Just taken in a parcel and the driver had a lit cigarette in his mouth. I must have had thousands of deliveries over the years and that’s never happened.

it’s unprofessional right?

Smoking while delivering a baby? Bad.

Smoking while delivering some old crap from Amazon? Not bad.

Good grief.

Hyacinth Bucket would be less judgemental.

Gemmy96 · 14/09/2024 19:37

Pay minimum wage, get minimum effort is all I can say.

Overcover · 14/09/2024 19:39

You probably need to pay more than a few pence per delivery to expect "professional"

Upupandaway10 · 14/09/2024 19:43

That is poor service

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 14/09/2024 19:43

@itsalwaysthesame dramatic to not want my hallway to smell of cigarette smoke? Right.

Hateam · 14/09/2024 19:45

Unless he was delivering a baby, I couldn't give a shit.

crostini · 14/09/2024 20:47

Yeah we had this with one delivery guy, everytime with a cig in mouth, packages always stank and he just chained smoked.
I'm a part time smoker so I'm not the smoking police but I would never walk up to anyone's doorstep with a cig!
He was such a friendly guy though so I don't worry about it, but yeah it's not great

bluegreygreen · 14/09/2024 21:02

People aren't necessarily slagging off his job - just pointing out it's not a profession, so expecting him to be professional is unrealistic.

RandomUsernameHere · 14/09/2024 21:40

Wouldn't bother me, being exposed to cigarette smoke for 5 seconds is no big deal.

Alli88 · 14/09/2024 21:46

Oh for goodness sake leave the guy alone. You've obviously got little to bother you πŸ™„πŸ™„

Jazzabel · 14/09/2024 22:02

Unless he deliberately blew the smoke straight into my face I wouldn’t care.

Side note. I used to be a smoker many many years ago, and back then to blow smoke into someone’s face meant β€œkiss me now, fuck me later!” This obviously adds noting to your post, but I’ve just remembered it!

Icanttakethisanymore · 14/09/2024 22:04

I’d be surprised but honestly, I’d leave him to it.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 14/09/2024 16:59

Was it a delivery from Evri??

I've had this before - I've also complained about it before because the guy WAS smoking in the van, to such an extent that my parcel stank, I had to take it outside to open and leave the packaging outside.

Hilarious! My Evri delivery guy also smokes! Must be the same guy or just Evri specific!

25soexcited · 14/09/2024 22:11

Crikey cannot believe you are so worked up about someone earning shit money, doing a thankless job …privileged much?

TheDogsMother · 14/09/2024 22:12

It's a slog of a job and I'm guessing he can't smoke in his van so I couldn't get worked up about this.

saraclara · 14/09/2024 22:25

I would be surprised but I wouldn't care at all. As for the claim that the smoke gets through the packaging...! Seriously, some posters on this thread should train as human sniffer dogs. The poster who had to open their parcel outside and leave the packaging there... 🀣

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 14/09/2024 22:31

How 'professional' do you really expect someone to be when all they're doing is plonking a package on your step or in your hands? It's hardly a job requiring a great deal of etiquette. I mean... I'm very anti-smoking, but I fail to see how that would affect me tbh.

Mikunia · 14/09/2024 22:33

I wouldn't want someone smoking on my property, and especially not at my open front door making my house smell. It's totally unprofessional. I don't care if he can't smoke in his van, in fact I'm glad he can't because smoking is vile. I'm glad my local delivery drivers don't do this as I would say something.

Great. Make someone lose their job. Presumably someone who can't get much else. Because being a delivery driver is an awful job that no-one would choose of they had options.

Like another poster, I hate smoking and smoke, but for goodness sake, it's not cyanide, and nor does it make your whole house smell (or even your hallway, for more than a few seconds).

Exactly.

What he did is inconsiderate and could be considered rude - and we should be able to expect basic consideration and manners from everyone, and yes it's unprofessional, however that's a moot point seeing as delivery drivers aren't generally considered professionals, until they step out of line that is.

Not educated, trained, paid, regarded or respected as a professional, yet expected to behave as one.

Funnily enough we had one do this this week.
DD collected the parcel from the driver and it set off her asthma as she got a face full of smoke when she opened the door. The parcel smelt of smoke and within 5 minutes I could also smell it in the lounge.
I bloody hate smoking, both my dad and DH's died of smoking related diseases so we avoid it whenever possible - that arsehole delivery driver basically blew a carcinogen into my house.

Why would they lose their job if I ask them directly not to smoke on my property? I would just ask the driver not to do it.

But yes, the smell does linger. I'm very sensitive to smells so I would be able to smell it for a long time.

It's not a profession, but you need some nous to do it and are expected to behave professionally. The subbie I worked for stated no smoking in the vans, but half of the drivers left for the Amazon depot with a tab hanging out of their mouths.

Definitely no smoking at the Amazon yard, however.

Auburngal · 15/09/2024 07:09

Of course its unprofessional. As many employers enforce a no smoking policy in their vehicles as the drivers don't necessary drive the same vehicle each time. Plus had couriers delivering parcels to me driving a rented van as rental company logo on van. Very high chance that there's no smoking allowed in the hire fleet. DF hired a van to help move a few things for me and were several no smoking allowed stickers in the cab and in the back.
