To think it’s unprofessional to deliver stuff with a lit cigarette in your mouth?

πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I know this is proper pearl clutching.

Just taken in a parcel and the driver had a lit cigarette in his mouth. I must have had thousands of deliveries over the years and that’s never happened.

it’s unprofessional right?

Was it a delivery from Evri??

I've had this before - I've also complained about it before because the guy WAS smoking in the van, to such an extent that my parcel stank, I had to take it outside to open and leave the packaging outside.

It's not a bomb πŸ™„ so dramatic!

No, it's not professional but it wouldn't really bother me, he was dropping me something off I'd say thanks and close the door.

Birdscratch · 14/09/2024 17:54

It doesn’t bother me at all.

Rummly · 14/09/2024 17:57

Smoking while delivering a baby? Bad.

Smoking while delivering some old crap from Amazon? Not bad.

LunaNorth · 14/09/2024 17:59

Aw, my old ballet teacher in the early 80s used to teach us with a fag on…

<nostalgic>

BiscuitlyBoyle · 14/09/2024 18:00

Not ideal but I’d cut him some slack as it’s a bollocks job.

yousexybugger · 14/09/2024 18:01

I would care. The days of smoking at work are over and that is a really good thing for public health. 'in the workplace' in my opinion means carrying customers' goods or on their property as well as in the van. He could vape discreetly or use nicotine gum or patches rather than walking around with a lit fag.

Berlinlover · 14/09/2024 18:03

Just because several PP look down on what this man does for a living doesn’t excuse him smoking on the job. Who knows, maybe he enjoys what he does.

LibertyStars · 14/09/2024 18:04

I’m sure he’s not supposed to be smoking while at work but honestly, do you really care? It’s a shit job. Why make someone’s already hard life worse?

Ohfuckrucksack · 14/09/2024 18:05

In terms of things smelling of smoke.

Many of the plastic delivery bags smell like smoke - have a sniff on the inside.

They're like that when they're new - used to use them when I sold stuff on ebay and it was definitely a thing.

I may have complained to someone once about stuff smelling of smoke - and then found out I was wrong and it was the bag.

SinnerBoy · 14/09/2024 18:05

I did Amazon deliveries during lockdown and not smoking on the property of recipients was mentioned during induction. If they complained, it meant a disciplinary.

That said, I wouldn't complain...

Belle82 · 14/09/2024 18:05

Totally out of order. Someone did this to me, it was a delivery of a nursery room item and I had to call the company, through the box it still stunk of smoke. Turned out she was smoking in the van too πŸ˜”

This. Why is everyone slagging off his job?

DearGoldFish · 14/09/2024 18:09

sure

could enjoy his job

but in all likelihood

he can’t fu*king stand it

This. Why is everyone slagging off his job?

People aren’t slagging off his job. They are saying it is a hard job, and it is- stressful and difficult, and in practice often with no breaks (drivers have to have breaks by law but in practice they are generally given more deliveries than can be done in the time allowed, so the breaks don’t happen).

LauritaEvita · 14/09/2024 18:15

Wouldn’t bother me and this would be quite normal in some countries. When I first moved to Spain, the cashiers in the bank would all be having a smoke while they served you! πŸ˜‚
I don’t think it’s unprofessional of the driver who will have to deal with all sorts- people opening the door with mad, barely legal dogs, people smoking weed, touching dirty doorbells etc.

user47 · 14/09/2024 18:19

FFS leave him alone - you got your parcel what harm was done? MN really does show how many petty minded busybodies there are.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 14/09/2024 18:25

A delivery driver quickly dashing up with a fag in his mouth, dropping the parcel before quickly moving away wouldn't upset me. These drivers don't get much by way of breaks I don't think, and I'd rather he smoked on the hoof than taking a full cigarette break on the pavement outside my house I suppose.

I saw a man smoking a pipe today. Not relevant to this conversation, but it's such a rare sight these days I thought I'd mention it πŸ™ƒ

CurlewKate · 14/09/2024 16:36

It's a shit job. You got your stuff. Leave him alone. And I hate smoking.

yep.

Get over yourself, OP. It's a crap job with huge pressure. You'll live.

Exactly πŸ‘πŸ½

Quiol · 14/09/2024 18:29

It's not professional, but neither are the companies, for some of the delivery companies, its terrible wages as its gig economy with no breaks etc, so shoving food in on the go or smoking because they don't have time to stop and have a break.

Noshowlomo · 14/09/2024 18:31

I had a delivery of a subway about a year ago (car in garage, would have driven myself otherwise) and the bag and packaging stank of cigarettes. It all went in the bin as seemed so dirty. It’s food ffs!

TinyYellow · 14/09/2024 18:33

They’re not paid enough to worry about professionalism. As long as your front door isn’t inside a block of flats, I can’t see the problem.

loadypoady · 14/09/2024 18:38

We had a replacement postie on our round recently and they knocked at the door as the item wouldn’t go through the letter box. They were smoking I was shocked and slightly disgusted.

BubblePerm · 14/09/2024 18:41

Minimum wage = minimum effort.
The government has subsidised exploitation via Amazon and the like by allowing them to operate like this: workers have to have a fag on the go, because there's no breaks and hassle if you do take a break. Some poor delivery driver was exposed in the press for having a shit down a side alley because his working conditions were so bad. No one wants to shit in the street.
The workers are routinely propped up by universal credit while Amazon and the like get away with tax dodges and wage theft.
Let the poor fucker have a fag in peace.

yousexybugger · 14/09/2024 18:41

It's not right when delivery drivers' pay and conditions aren't fair but that doesn't make it right for them to smoke at work.
