Wearing mascara on your lower lashes?

I’ve tried it but my eyes are too watery and it looks a mess. But I absolutely love the look.

Does anyone do this? I rarely see this look.

I haven't done my bottom lashes since the 90s! I don't even use eyeliner on my lower lash line these days. I think both looks really dated.

SophiaSW1 · 14/09/2024 23:56

I have very long eyelashes so I only do the top ones. It would look stupid to do the bottom ones too

ThisZingyBlueFish · 15/09/2024 00:02

Ha, I read somewhere as a teen that red heads don't need to do their bottom lashes. So I stopped doing them and thought I was pretty great.
Until one day at work I served a red head who hadn't done her lower lashes and I couldn't stop looking (with my obviously unbalanced face) at how obviously unbalanced she looked!
Started with bottom lashes again the next morning and have never stopped.

I've always done both and never realised people didn't!

Same here!

SavageTomato · 15/09/2024 00:15

I was a goth and bloody loved all the makeup and dressing up. Bottom lashes mascara is quite a skill.

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 15/09/2024 00:46

I only do the top, I think bottom lash mascara is really outdated now.

Violetmoonbeam · 15/09/2024 00:48

The way I apply.

One coat on top using a zigzag motion. Leave to dry without blinking for a few seconds. Second coat, light upward strokes with less on the brush. Dry.

For lower lashes, I dip, then quickly scrape the mascara back into mascara bottle and wipe the wand on a clean lint free tissue to remove the excess and give my lower lashes a light touch with gentle downwards strokes. Provides definition without the spidering and clumping.

Always resist the urge to do more, it rarely goes well. Once you overdo it, there's no way back in my own experience.

I can't stand my lashes being clumpy.

But are you getting your makeup done for an occasion? Where you’d want your makeup more “dramatic” than your every day look?

(Not saying your makeup looked dramatic just more noticeably than your day to day)

Yes would be for an occasion, but just pointing out for all the commenters saying it's old fashioned that make up artists do bottom lashes too.

I think people are thinking bottom lashes =twiggy long and thick. But it's just a case of going over them lightly to tint and separate. If I use a good powder/mascara they never run.

hihihithere · 15/09/2024 00:54

I've always done both and they never smudge

Aren’t lash growing serums quite dangerous?

Not as long as you make sure they don’t contain prostaglandins, no.

@Illegally18 - LashLuxury for me. Comes from Canada (I’m so precious 😆), but arrives quickly and they do good offers. It works really well, with no adverse effects like some - including the UK market leader.

(No, I’ve no idea why I order an eyelash serum from Canada to UK really. Presumably I read about it or it was recommended, I forget now.)

I only wear it on my top lashes, just prefer it that way now!
When I was a teen I used to wear it on the bottom lashes.

This is me too.

JMSA · 15/09/2024 01:27

Always both. My natural lashes are super blonde, so it would look odd if not. It never smudges.

ImustLearn2Cook · 15/09/2024 01:32

Fashions come and go. I just do what looks good on me.

I find the comments of it’s dated and out of fashion odd tbh - as someone who doesn’t wear it.

As I said in an earlier comment it’s skill, technique, products, facial features.

What’s odder though is people not realising some people only do their top lashes.

I have only ever done my top lashes as mine are long and mascara would end up smudged under my eye if I did the bottom. Plus they’re very dark so it doesn’t add anything.

AbraAbraCadabra · 15/09/2024 02:11

I have only ever done top as my eyes look weird if it's on both top and bottom lashes.

AbraAbraCadabra · 15/09/2024 02:11

Ultravox · 14/09/2024 15:08

I only do the top. I’ve got quite pale skin and long dark lower lashes so it looks a bit overkill to do the bottom. They look like spider legs.

I am pale too so maybe that's why mine look weird.

QueenBitch666 · 15/09/2024 02:43

Both here. No smudging ever. Essence mascaras

Stirmish · 15/09/2024 02:50

I never apply mascara to my bottom lashes

pinkstripeycat · 15/09/2024 03:05

I’ve always done both. Don’t think I’ve seen anyone with just the top made up.

dhxxx · 15/09/2024 06:29

Never do lower lashes. I barely have any and it looks very strange

Whereas I'd say I can't recall anyone with mascara on lower lashes! So in essence, it does mascara even matter as no one notices either way 😂

FerryorTunnel · 15/09/2024 06:38

I read somewhere after 40 it is not advisable as it ages you more.

As I get older my makeup gets more and more subtle.

Light mascara on top lashes.

My DC and I all have very long lashes anyway.

I did singe all mine off once in a cooker accident but they grew back to their original length.

Choosetolivelife · 15/09/2024 11:06

😱gosh, I'm pleased your eyes were okay, nevermind the lashes!!

bringincrazyback · 15/09/2024 11:10

I have found my lower lashes can only take a light coating of mascara if I'm going on a Zoom call. They really seem to show up as spider legs or clumpy otherwise. 😄
