To be furious with neighbours

I was recently away for the weekend and left my car parked at home.

Came back early this week and noticed mud loads of muck and grass outside their house (they dont own a car so that space is empty and mine is directly beside theirs) and mud all over their fence from what looks like brushing/spraying from cleaning the footpath and their garden.

The mud was sprayed all over my car bonnet and windscreen - it was absolutely filthy.

I came across my neighbour as she was leaving yesterday and asked her was she cleaning outside as it made a lot of mess and its made my car filthy.

She just laughed and said "sure the rain will wash it off, sorry".

In fact, the rain did not "wash it off" and I spent £15 having to get the car cleaned.

I am furious. If I did this I would at least offer to pay for the car wash and not laugh off spraying dirt on someone's car.

AIBU to be pissed at this?

I'd be fuming too. She could have put a note through the door and/or hired the mud off your car

Ellejay57 · 11/09/2024 20:21

*hosed

Edingril · 11/09/2024 20:23

Furious? you sound a calm and rational neighbour

MirrorMirror1247 · 11/09/2024 20:00

My neighbours/their landlords currently owe me nearly £3.5k in total. I'd be glad to have your neighbour problems!

Agreed. I currently share a garden with my neighbours because they refuse to fix their fucking fence! And he plays music with profanities blasting across the street at 8am on Sunday mornings when our neighbours the other side have very young kids. That's just the start! A bit of mud is nothing..

thursdaymurderclub · 11/09/2024 20:26

oh dear.. cars get dirty! it doesnt have to cost you £15 to clean in, you could simply get a bucket and soapy water and give it a wash yourself?

nosleepforme · 11/09/2024 20:26

Upsetting, annoying and a horrible reaction from her. But yeah no need to be furious

Respectisnotoptional · 11/09/2024 20:31

There’s a very appropriate saying for this.
’Don't make a mountain out of a molehill’
In the great scheme of things it’s like a tiny raindrop in an ocean (I made that one up 🤭)

If it were me-
On Christmas eve, call around with some mince pies but accidently step in dog poo just before going in and tramp it all over their carpet.
I probably wouldn't actually do it, but planning is half the fun.

😆

Libertysparkle · 11/09/2024 20:34

I would be annoyed as i love my car. But I'd wash it myself!

Wwyd2025 · 11/09/2024 20:35

Surely you could have washed it yourself?

It's not that big of a deal. Cars get dirty anyway!

DisabledDemon · 11/09/2024 20:36

Well, I’d be furious and no, I don’t think I would be overreacting, particularly in light of the flippant response. An ‘I’m so sorry, I didn’t realise’ would have gone a long way.

DogInATent · 11/09/2024 20:37

Have they got a lawn?
If they have, get a bag of frozen sausages... and a mallet...

lightsandtunnels · 11/09/2024 20:39

I think YABU.
They couldn't have avoided splashing your car if they were jet washing their drive which is right next to it. It's just one of those things.
It would have been generous if they had offered to clean your car but not necessary I don't think.

SinnerBoy · 11/09/2024 20:44

She should have washed the mud off, it dries on and is more difficult to clean off. She is lazy, selfish and disrespectful to have washed the mud off her drive and onto yours and your car.

I don't understand how the posters supporting her. If their neighbours threw mud and garden waste onto their drives and said, "Chill, it'll rain soon," they wouldn't be at all impressed.

HPFA · 11/09/2024 20:44

I'd be annoyed if this happened to me but I'm not sure why you had to have it professionally cleaned?

I did a mud clean on my car at the weekend after driving it through a muddy field It probably took about a half an hour - that was having to scrape off under the mudguards and not having a hose so making frequent trips with bucket and water.

If it had been bonnet and windscreen it would probably have taken five-ten minutes.

If I'd been your neighbour and noticed what had happened I would have cleaned it up at the time but certainly wouldn't have volunteered to pay for a car wash.

KvotheTheBloodless · 11/09/2024 20:48

Most people would be annoyed by that, ignore the nonsense posters saying it's fine, some folk just enjoy putting the boot in to strangers on the Internet.

It's weird that your neighbour didn't offer to clean it tbh. She sounds unpleasant.

Hoglet70 · 11/09/2024 20:52

I would be SO pissed off. It's the sort of thing my neighbours would do and not give a shit.

colourfulchinadolls · 11/09/2024 20:53

I'd be really pissed off too OP.

Not sure why you're getting such a pasting.

Headinthesand21 · 11/09/2024 20:54

Annoying and inconsiderate, yes. But furious is a bit OTT. You should have just got the hose or a bucket out and washed it off . You didn’t need to spend £15.

Tigertigertigertiger · 11/09/2024 20:55

Inconvenient.
Not worth getting upset

Flatulence · 11/09/2024 21:01

Unless the car was absolutely caked in literal shit and/or damaged then YABU to be 'furious' about mud on your car.
Yes, it's annoying. Yes, your neighbour should have offered to wash it off or offered you a tenner for the car wash. But in the grand scheme of things it's incredibly small fry. Assuming your neighbour is otherwise pleasant and accommodating I'd let this one pass; it's not worth falling out with otherwise decent neighbours over a bit of mud.

Sinisterdexter · 11/09/2024 21:02

I would have used the hose on the car with the water directed at their house windows.
And then laughed.

That's rude and inconsiderate, some people are just dicks. Don't let her wind you up.

eggandchip · 11/09/2024 21:09
