Seeing Prisoners celebrating their release?

Horrible seeing prisoners on the news Celebrating their release. One cracked open a bottle, like you do when your celebrating.
Did the news need to show it?
Not nice for the victims to see this?

Why are there so many people in prison anyway?😮

@JenniferBooth

There's no hierarchy of 'respect'

MartinCrieffsLemon · 11/09/2024 23:24

I know people who work in the prison service. Every day there are families with champagne waiting for prison releases.

The TV were just reporting because it's the "Big release day" to make space for rioters

They aren't "free" so much as they still have to report in etc. The moment they break the conditions they are back in

Some crimes won't have "victims" in the sense of someone beaten up or robbed.

Rare but some people will genuinely be innocent as well

It's not great but it's the reporters who are the problem

jcyclops · 11/09/2024 23:27

I hate that right at the end of any trial with a sentence less than "life" the judges lie to the court when they say "go to prison for 5 years" when the truth is they are only going to prison for 2 years.

A "life sentence" is something like "life with a minimum term of 12 years". Other sentences should be similar such as "5 years with a minimum term of 3 years".

Bruisername · 10/09/2024 21:19

There was a guy interviewed who said he had nowhere to go and would probably end up on a bench and drinking again so he expected to end up inside again.

How about you talk about the full interview where he said that there isn’t any support and the system has set him up to fail. He’s been released from prison early just to free up a bed space. He has no job, no plans other than meeting with his probation officer and nowhere to stay. This is why so many inmates reoffend

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 11/09/2024 23:31

@Newsenmum if you’re interested in the interview, you can watch it here

FawnFrenchieMum · 10/09/2024 22:13

But they haven’t done their time. That’s the point, they are being released early to free up space for others.

And what’s the reason that they’re being let out on early release? It’s because prisons are overcrowded and the government don’t know what to do. Are the inmates that are being released meant to leave the prison saying that they want to go back in and finish their sentence? Be real. It’s on the government that they’re being released early in the first place, not the inmates.

Some of you really don’t expect people to celebrate after leaving prison? Wow

DogInATent · 11/09/2024 23:36

Alapotin · 11/09/2024 22:10

It wasn't a good look

I'm sure the news editor of Gee-Beebies would disagree, it's the perfect visual for the POV they'd like to put across.

girlfriend44 · 10/09/2024 22:29

On the TV spare a thought for the victims.

Do you know what a victimless crime is? Not every crime committed has one individual victim. Trespassing, illegal gambling, recreational drug possession are just a few things that come to mind…

Moier · 11/09/2024 23:47

Thank Goodness my ex got life and won't ever be released.
Planned attempted murder.
Left me seriously disabled and in a coma.
I hope those that are released can turn their life around.
But loads prefer to stay in.. because the other option is sleeping on the streets.
I knew an homeless guy who would commit robbery at the beginning of every winter .. so he wouldn't freeze .

Do they actually say 'go to prison for 5 years' though?

Or

I sentence you to a five year custodial sentence

Halloumiheaven · 11/09/2024 23:59

I agree with you OP, it's in poor taste to do it publicly.

For some reason this 'perpetrator sympathising/victimising ' seems the new cool hard left wing thing.

All very well until you or your families or communities are the victims of their crimes. Then I should imagine it's a very lonely and isolating place to be. All whilst the hard left are wetting their knickers to provide 'understanding' on how we've 'failed' these 'disadvantaged and underprivileged individuals'

AGirlInACountrySong · 12/09/2024 00:02

It's not 'publicly' they are on crown property still as they leave the gatehouse!!

It's the journalists and long lens who are filming it for YOU to froth over

I never said whether celebrating was right or wrong. I was replying to the person that said they have done their time, leave them alone.

I totally get that it’s between letting these low level criminals out a little early or stop trials for other crimes. Scary times all round.

Brefugee · 12/09/2024 12:35

TBH if i were let out of prison early i'd be cracking open the champagne too. What do you expect them to say "oh not me, guv, i've still got a 4 stretch to complete"?

Brefugee · 12/09/2024 12:47

i just watched that clip. That poor man. He is resigned to his life being a load of shit. What will happen now? either he'll get "lucky" and get recalled to a rat infested prison, or he'll spend winter on a park bench.

GrouachMacbeth · 12/09/2024 12:49

Click bait or fuel for the outrage bus.

Ponoka7 · 10/09/2024 21:06

Well they are there because they were found guilty of what they were charged with. So you don't believe in rehabilitation and fresh starts? I know a woman who got a very harsh sentence, her getting out was a celebration.

SMH. Have you seen prison??? Rehabilitation and fresh starts don't begin in prison. And many of those males are beyond rehabilitation and fresh starts.
My daughter's abuser, her own father, is getting out early.
I have the report of his 'progress' on my desktop. The prisoner has shown lack of insight and no remorse. He has declined medical intervention and medication (to treat his mental health).
But fuck all that. He's baaaaack! Yay! Pour out a little liquor and give that man a tall glass. Hell, get him a table dance.
Don't all line up with the Thank Yous to our government all at once.

And please, don't start a 'well, what should we do to rehabilitate these men?' conversation with me. It'll end up being a bun fight using grenades. I haven't got the fight in me today. And yes, I know you're talking about a female prisoner because that's your lived experience. Mine's different so my perspective is different.

Click bait or fuel for the outrage bus.

It's shameful. It is exactly that. But honestly, people like me don't need any clickbait to be pissed off. I've been angry since I found out about the crimes against my DD. And here's a secret I'll share with everyone: There is no justice. That prison sentence didn't diminish my anger because there is sweet fuck all that can be done to undo the unending pain and harm my daughter has suffered. There really is no justice. It's all a charade. I reckon I'd be as angry if my daughter's abuser went to live among like-minded lepers. Prison walls don't heal the victim. They don't rehabilitate the criminal. It all comes back to just plain old terrible luck that this terrible person crossed my life path and wrecked it. And I don't know if I'll ever get over it. Prison or no prison. Full sentence or early release. It doesn't make an ounce of difference to my rage. I've spent his entire time in prison angry. I do wish he died in there. I think death would be the best solution for so many oxygen suckers on this planet. I don't feel an ounce of sympathy for the majority of them who have been in prison because they delivered harm to so many. It's rare that a nice guy just ends up in prison. It happens. But it's uncommon.

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 12/09/2024 13:02

I didn't see any TV coverage - we watch a lot less live TV than ever before.

Radio 4 did cover it though which I heard -one prison happy to be out determine not to go back and really hoping then could make changes and make up with family.

Another resigned almost that he'd likely be sleeping on a park bench that night - and worried he'd go back to alcohol and in again. Presenter than talked to someone official about lack of accommodation - who said yep been going on for years to point one prison hands out tents.

They also spoke to someone from probation service worried about their work loads and worry about lack of preparation work done that may need that reoffending rates are higher than normal.

Also spoke to a charity running scheme with low offending rates who said similar that reoffending rates may rise - and we need more of their work - and DV spokespeople worried about offenders being let out early and potential negative affects on victims.

So clearly it can be covered better than you are describing OP.

Oh yes, prison is well known for how amazing it is at rehabilitation, especially for totally rehabilitating them before they’ve served even half of their sentence!

I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with that, it’s an absolute disgrace. I was abused by my dad too, and for all the bleeding hearts crying over how little help there is for these men, guess how much help there is for the victims?

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 12/09/2024 13:13

Naunet Loving hugs to you. Be brave, be bold as you can possibly be, given the legacy of pain your own father has left you with. I hope you have risen way above it. You have all of my support and I'm rooting for you... even if I am just some middle aged weirdo on MN. 😆Hugs to you, my friend.
Yeah, I have zero time for the bleeding hearts. I'd love to see their response if we said, "Well, give that man a bed in your home. Welcome him over your threshold and feed him." You'd see their sympathy deflate in a nanosecond, I bet! They won't be the ones serving ex-cons at the soup kitchen.

Riapia · 12/09/2024 13:25

Don’t worry OP, many of those who have been released early will be back inside quite soon.

Oh god, you’ve just put a lump in my throat! Thank you, that’s such a kind thing to say. I hope you and your daughter are doing ok and getting all the support you need. She’s stronger than she knows and she can overcome this, it doesn’t define her, I hope she knows that and I’m sure having such a supportive mum there for her, will make all the difference for her. X

I just wanted to say I'm so sorry Flowers

I was the daughter in this situation and I know it probably doesn't help but I wish I had had a mother who was so protective, so angry, so determined, however futile, for justice, on her daughter's behalf. It may not feel like it, but it will make such a difference to her.
