Seeing Prisoners celebrating their release?

Horrible seeing prisoners on the news Celebrating their release. One cracked open a bottle, like you do when your celebrating.
Did the news need to show it?
Not nice for the victims to see this?

Why are there so many people in prison anyway?😮

They are out early. So they haven't done their full time.

I do t think I can necessarily blame them for being happy at being released early, or even for celebrating, but it’s pretty crass to show it on tv.

They are out early. So they haven't done their full time.

Doesn't mean they can't celebrate with their families

And some of those released today HAD done their time!

They are out early. So they haven't done their full time.

But this happens all the time. These people have been released after serving 40% of their sentence, previously it was 50%. I imagine the people who got released last week when the rule was still 50% celebrated as well. These people just happen to have been on tv.

But they haven’t done their time. That’s the point, they are being released early to free up space for others.

Well they kind of have. The way they are doing it is reducing the time served to be realeased on parole from 50% of sentence to 40% of sentence for all nonviolent criminals.

The government as a whole has blanket reduced the time.

No one’s done their full sentence since I don’t know when…it’s been around for decades that you do 50% the sentence in prison and 50% on licence /parole. A life sentence is really 17yrs for example.

So to go to 40% for nonviolent crimes…it’s a tiny tweak.

Edingril · 10/09/2024 23:49

They have served their time and are people in their own right they have a right to do what they want without people going 'you can't do that'

Their crimes are a separate thing

Who says it was a harsh sentence, bet the viictim didnt?

There wasn't a victim as such. The woman had been brought up in care. Her and her sister had been victims of sexual assault at one placement. She had a baby die of complex disabilities. Her sister committed suicide because of the lack of support. The woman had always worked full time, but she was vulnerable and was love bombed by a drug dealer who then kept drugs in her flat. He did a runner, she honestly didn't know were he was etc but the court decided she did. The ironic thing was that he was later charged over drugs and violent assaults, yet got a less of a sentence than her. He's in and out of prison, yet his sentences still don't match the one she got.

RosannaSpider · 11/09/2024 03:37

They have a right to celebrate. The news reports things to annoy others and cause them depression/anxiety or to fight amongst eachother.
Stop watching the news if you're so easily influenced and triggered

stripybobblehat · 10/09/2024 22:30

It isn't really their fault they are on TV though. I blame the media

You blame the media for covering a news story?! I’ve heard it all now. Do you not think the press should be there to see thousands of prisoners released early and to get their opinion on the situation?

AGirlInACountrySong · 11/09/2024 21:37

I don't think they give an opinion? Just show us what they see

OlivePoet · 11/09/2024 21:42

haven't seen ex-prisoners celebrating on the news (weird thing to film really), but can't say I blame them for doing so. But maybe you think if someone's been to prison they should be ashamed of themselves forever?

Unlike social housing tenants eh?

@JenniferBooth what has a thread from APRIL got to do with this?

OlivePoet · 11/09/2024 22:02

JenniferBooth · 11/09/2024 21:59

Eh?? Maybe I'm being dense but I'm not sure what that thread has to do with my post?

Alwaysanotherwine · 11/09/2024 22:09

there aren’t enough prison places

most prisoners get out mid sentence so really isn’t not much difference

i’ve worked prisons 25 years - a few months isn’t going to make a difference

there’s also eligibility criteria - not all are eligible

better to use the space for those who need prison - i’d rather they release some than avoid sending others altogether

Alapotin · 11/09/2024 22:10

It wasn't a good look

AGirlInACountrySong · 11/09/2024 22:11

It happens daily, regardless of any early release scheme!

'Wasn't a good look' for whom?

Alapotin · 11/09/2024 22:13

I'm surprised sir Keir wasn't there celebrating with them

No I blame them for going out to the prisons and showing what happens on release day. If you hadn't been told someone had been released and wham they're on the TV you'd be shocked as hell

Because there is more respect for prisoners on here than there is for social housing tenants. And im not the only one who has noticed it

What?? Where did I say anything about people in social housing??

Or do you mean in general? Your thread had nothing to do with social housing...

girlfriend44 · 10/09/2024 22:31

They are out early. So they haven't done their full time.

They will have been assessed and deemed as being ready to be in the community again. You don't know what their crimes are and therefore don't know if there has been a specific "victim" per se.

If there are, then I imagine it would be just as jarring for any victims if it happens today, as if they get out early for good behaviour on another day, or if they get out on the day they're meant to get out.

What I'm interested in, is what work is done with them in prison to help them understand the impact of their crime and how they got to that point in their life, and what's in place when they get out to help make sure they don't reoffend. Their celebration of being out of prison and back with people who care about them is less interesting to me.

I agree with @stripybobblehat you'd like to think that any direct victims would have been made aware of the plans for release ahead of the broadcast. Unfortunately it doesn't always work that way even in other days with other releases.
