To wish there would be a crackdown on the Deliveroo cyclists riding like maniacs without any consequences

But to be certain there never will be

(As an aside, many of them are completely undocumented in the UK so using them is only marginally safer than hitchhiking imo)

Obviously not a problem limited specifically to Deliveroo, they're just a big example of the sector

OP posts:

Because anyone who drives/cycles dangerously is an illegal immigrant from an anonymous criminal underclass. Hmm Don't you dare try and dress this up with faux concern about road safety and delivery driver welfare - we see you OP and know exactly what you're up to. Were you out rioting a few weeks ago?

No one is claiming this.

There are plenty of middle and upper class twats who cycle dangerously.

They don't tend to be Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber delivery moped and bycicle riding pests.

And OP has clearly not been rioting because prisons won't let the inmates use SM.

Editing to add that I would be very happy to see a crackdown on every single person cycling dangerously, delivery person or anyone else being a dangerous twat while out on a bicycle.

I’m loathe to make this comment as thus far was only reporting what I’ve seen as dangerous ‘driving’ and the impact it’s having in my area. It’s not just 1 or 2 its 10’s of them. I don’t want to ‘immigration bash’.

However, if the view is many of these drivers are illegal immigrants - why drive like a lunatic and risk being pulled over?! They all have smart phones (used whilst driving) so this is not a lack of access to information issue.

I don’t order takeaway and the whole thing is just so weird to me. I get people want a Friday night takeout (whatever day/cuisine), however McDonalds Deliveroo is one of the most depressing things to enter the 21st century in my view.

Have you ever seen a cyclist pulled over for bad cycling?

No.

This is why they don't care. Because they know they won't be pulled over.

Isn't the problem that asylum seekers can't legally work leaving them for years in limbo waiting for their claim to be accepted or refused (if economic migrants). So this is one of few ways to earn money. If the immigration backlog was sorted then immigrants would either be able to get normal jobs or or would be sent back. The backlog has created a pool of people wanting an unofficial job and Deliveroo etc a demand for people to work unofficially for minimal pay. Plus the development of ebikes gives you unlicensed powered transport.
Regulating ebikes and delivery jobs would be a start.

That isn't the problem really as once legally able to work, many immigrants still cannot speak English well enough to have a 'normal' job let alone have qualifications or recognised skills for many job roles. We are letting these people down massively by allowing them to stay and not doing more to teach them English quickly and get them on their feet. Once given the right to remain, as I understand it, they then have to leave the home office supported accommodation and often become homeless which is another barrier to work.

I see dangerous white middle class cyclists all the time. Probably more than any other type of cyclist to be honest.

Last night I had driven down a hill at rush hour and was waiting to turn right at a busy four way junction. A not-Deliveroo cyclist coming from the opposite direction decided to go through an amber light straight on, up a hill so very slowly, leaving me and the car in front of me in the middle of the junction unable to turn and leaving herself vulnerable to being hit by oncoming traffic. She didn't care, she just laughed.

A couple of weeks ago I was hit in the arm by the handlebars of a child cycling on the pavement as they flew past me down a hill. The parent saw but didn't care.

I live near a park and encounter cyclists (usually male) treating the paths like race tracks, sometimes 2 abreast so you have to jump off the path and onto the grass.

I've encountered a row of cyclists stopped in the middle of a 60mph road, having a drink and a chat, just over the peak of a blind summit which scared the life out of me.

Cycling is great and I admire anyone who chooses to leave their car at home and get on their bike instead. I don't mind being stuck behind a cyclist and always give them plenty of room rather than driving up their arse like some people did to me when I was a cyclist. I just wish they would all follow the highway code for everyone's safety, regardless of who they are and where they came from.

I wish everyone would do that, whether on four wheels, two wheels or two legs.

I was nearly run down by someone on a mobility scooter yesterday as well. He pulled off without looking behind him on the pavement to see if I (or anyone else) was coming. My mum told me about someone in her town who caused an elderly lady serious injury. I don't know if there's any process for removing a mobility scooter from a dangerous "driver" though.

you also get car drivers who park on blind summits as well.

In fact I was thinking about this this morning when I was out for a walk. There is something very wrong with our driving test. It produces people who can technically drive a car. But it doesn't seem to teach anything about sensible, common sense driving. For example, not parking on blind summits. But the two examples I saw this morning were people in a queue blocking adjacent side roads (please let people in and out of the road they live in!), and people turning right out of a petrol station when there's a roundabout to the left (and there's actually a no right turn sign as well).

GenAvocadoOnToast · 12/09/2024 09:44

I experience this pretty much every day as my flat is on a busy road that's often backed up with traffic because of the lights. So many drivers don't bother to leave a gap for me when it would make no difference to their journey time at all. Another one is zip merging. I've had a few experiences recently where the other lane won't let the merging traffic in. I've ended up having to stand my ground and force my way in which is quite stressful, the last thing I want on my commute is an altercation with a selfish twat.

I don't think it's only a common sense thing, I think a lot of people know what they're doing and don't care. I've found these things more of a problem in recent years.

It's rare enough to see a driver pulled over. And that's not for lack of candidates!

Until you provide me with good stats that these biking deliveroo riders are more dangerous than cars, I think there are way more important things to get worried about than people trying to scrape a living together during a cost of living crisis.

Not if the riders are a danger to themselves too. The ones I see are dressed head to toe in black, wear black hoodies with black scarves around their faces, making them just about invisible as they wander all over the roads at night without a care in the world.

They ride on pavements, and in pedestrianised areas. They are a menace where I live, and they are dangerous as they are not pedalling.... the bikes have small motors. They are very fast. They should be on the road, with number plate etc.
No stats on that.. how would you gather that data?

There will be stats if people are being hurt or killed by them. There will be crime statistics.

Andoutcomethewolves · 12/09/2024 21:45

Yeah they're a menace. Bristol city centre is largely pedestrianised and I hate to see the packs of delivery cyclists zipping around kids/elderly people/people with prams and buggies etc - I was nearly hit yesterday by some dick (one of a group of five or six all speeding down the paved high street together) doing a high speed wheelie (I assume his Deliveroo box was empty!).

We're also a trial area for e-scooters so we have those too - both on the road (with no road sense - seen so many near misses!) and taking up the pavement, expecting people to leap out of their way. If anything I find these more scary - although there are rules they're often not followed and they seem to be the transport of choice for kids or people clearly under the influence of something, usually with two to a scooter. At least with Deliveroo etc al you know they're at least 18 and at work so (hopefully!) sober!

This! I don't care if they're delivering food or not, e-bikes are a complete menace and a new urban blight. I hate people powering down the pavement on them and the clumps of hideous limebikes everywhere.

So you deliberately only listen to the last half of anything people say. You sound like my DH 😂. I tell him that’s why we constantly have misunderstandings too!

😂I think it is strange that you won't accept the reality until people start dying because of these irresponsible riders. I would much prefer to prevent deaths than wait for them to happen to prove a point on an internet thread.
