A man told me how I should have reverse parked. I told him to floss and use a stain resistant toothpaste.

I had to use DH truck today - which I rarely drive. I then has a tricky reverse park in a busy town. A man watched the whole thing with his arms cross, chuckling and came over and offered a lot of critique and unsolicited advice.
WIBU to offer him critique and unsolicited advice in return?

Yeah yeah, I know I was rude but fuck me, he was a twat of the highest order.

I may have used the phrase "Is it FREE ADVICE DAY? GREAT?"

That was neither as clever or funny as you think.
He was a Dick, you could have made your point AND been a bit more classy

Why though? He gave unsolicited advice and op gave him back unsolicited advice - if he could take it, he shouldn’t be giving it out.

asking him not to do it, probably get you nowhere
next time he might stop and think

tarheelbaby · 08/09/2024 20:59

Priceless! I am crying with laughter.

Well done for not retiring passively. When did it become the recipient's burden to absorb insults?

If he's going to give you an unsolicited opinion, you are completed within your rights to give him one. You're still smarting from his unkind assessment. Maybe he's rethinking his dental hygiene (or ... knowing Brit men, probably not, ugh.)

And 'yeah, thanks, Grandad' would have been an equally good answer but an insult to the many excellent Grandads everywhere.

GrumpyOldCrone · 08/09/2024 21:05

The thing that annoys me is unsolicited advice from men while I’m manoeuvring into a parking space. I’m actually quite good at parking and I don’t need any help. I never look like I’m struggling so there’s no need to offer advice, and I’d prefer not to be distracted by random men standing too close to my car making hand gestures. Arseholes.

theduchessofspork · 08/09/2024 21:05

quite right.

He’s lucky you didn’t run over his foot

tulippa · 08/09/2024 21:06

I was reversing into a space once when a man appeared out of nowhere and started flapping his arms around in an unwanted/unneeded attempt to guide me in. I told him to fuck off which is most unlike me.

I've also had a man congratulate me after I reversed into a space in Tesco car park as "women can't usually do that". Hmm

RosesAndHellebores · 08/09/2024 21:09

Oh I feel your pain. Earlier this summer when reverse parking a chap stood in front of me doing the hand movements and shouting out "down right with the wheel" or whatever, which I always find very confusing.

Once I had parked perfectly, I thanked him.profusely for his help and added with a smile, "I find my rear view cameras so helpful for parking".

Beansandneedles · 08/09/2024 21:09

Love this! It's nice when the right words come at the right time isn't it.

I remember when I was about 7 months pregnant a total stranger said 'You're very big, aren't you!' to which I responded 'you're very rude, aren't you!' DH wanted the ground to open up and swallow us but I'm still rather proud of that one. In all credit to her we ended the chat by concluding if it isn't okay to talk about another person's weight when they're not pregnant then doing it when they're full of hormones is probably a double no. She laughed, I laughed. All was well.

InSpainTheRain · 08/09/2024 21:10

I think what you said was funny, I might use it myself if the opportunity arises. He sounds a twat who was trying to sap your confidence, so well done for putting him in his place.

What would you suggest?

Anyway, the OP doesn’t have to be ‘classy’ just cos she’s a ladyyyy, she reacted in the moment as anyone would and that is fine.

Also, there is nothing less classy than the word classy, FYI

I was once told off for a man for parking outside my own house. He slowed down his car and berated me through the window.

He picked the wrong day. I followed him home and asked him what his bloody problem was. Twat.

He may not have been stropping. He may have been running to get his floss

You’re a better woman than me OP.

My last comeback in this sort of situation was at least I didn’t come out in my slippers.

You bastard ...<coughs and splutters>

Your post needs a health warning

Nearly choked on my coffee. 😂

BlackShuck3 · 08/09/2024 21:12

LEGEND✌🏻😎

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 08/09/2024 21:13

It was a low blow, OP, but to be honest anything (within reason) that contributes to a world where men don't feel like they can say anything they like in public to women they have never met about their driving is all right with me.

stickygotstuck · 08/09/2024 21:14

Well done OP.

To the PP who complain of OP's 'classiness' or lack thereof - she is not in any obligation to be 'classy' at any moment in time. Let alone after being patronised by a complete twat.

AdoraBell · 08/09/2024 21:17

YANBU and having read your title to DH is currently laughing at the idiotic bloke.

VaddaABeetch · 08/09/2024 21:17

Thank you random man with a half curtesy is always the proper response

SerafinasGoose · 08/09/2024 21:18

MintyNew · 08/09/2024 20:48

You stopped to his level which I think makes you sound worse off op. You went very personal which isn't nice.

Women are not required always to be 'nice'.

Men could of course leave us the hell alone to go about our day in peace. Now that really would be nice. Pity they seem incapable.

Branleuse · 08/09/2024 21:18

Fuck classy! That's brilliant 😁

I am thinking about it and feeling mildly ashamed. He was just such a knob but I should have been "Yeah, thanks Grandad"

No, that's worse. You can retaliate with being an "ist". In this case ageist. That would have be cheap & easy, and wouldn't have showered you in glory.

StMarieforme · 08/09/2024 21:20

I had a lovely man (about 20 years older than me, I was 50) come up after I'd parallel parked straight in and say I'd parked so well he'd like to take me for coffee!! I said "oh no, I always park like that, but thank you!" And walked off bemused lol!

GrazingSheep · 08/09/2024 21:22

Priceless! I am crying with laughter.

Really?

I'm 64. I want to be you when I finally grow up.

You've given me my first genuine smile of the day.
