Is it unreasonable to have more than one overseas holiday a year in the current situation?

Recently retired, and one of the things I had been looking forward to is travelling. But a certain source (family, not going into it further, sorry) has hinted that more than one holiday abroad a year is 'just greedy' and everyone should take more breaks in the UK to help our economy, eco reasons etc.
I'm sorry but I want to go abroad. Just to Europe mainly, no long haul at all, nothing extravagant, self catering apartment/ultra-cheapo hotel. I just want to see beautiful buildings and historical places.
I love visiting in this country too, have been to nearly every county and all countries except N.Ireland. We had to holiday at home/on the cheap when kids were small, now we have some spare money due to bye-bye mortgage.
This person has had multiple trips to the US, Cyprus villas, lots of luxury but have got a bit born again about travel.
What to say? Yes, I expect to be hauled over the coals here for flying, but we hardly flew for 20 years.
Easy to say MYOB but family dynamics not so simple.
YABU - don't go too often
YANBU - travel

Travel and enjoy it
ignore the hypocritical judging

BrieHugger · 08/09/2024 20:20

Absolutely yes, do it, see the world. I don’t know how anyone can begrudge a retired person doing this!

Cynic17 · 08/09/2024 20:21

Do whatever you want, OP - it is nobody else's business.
Travel is one of the great joys of life. I'm convinced it's what we'll remember most fondly when we're on our deathbed!

bridgetreilly · 08/09/2024 20:21

If you can afford it, do it. They don’t get a say.

midgetastic · 08/09/2024 20:21

Ideally to protect the planet you should only fly once every couple of years, but for Europe it's so easy to train or drive

Melodysmum12 · 08/09/2024 20:22

It’s your life and there’s so much of the world to see! Do you!

AgnesX · 08/09/2024 20:23

If you are fit, have the money and the time and, I suppose, the familial freedom, go for it as often as you want.

Are you being harassed into child minding? Ignore the harassment.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 08/09/2024 20:23

I wonder whether this person thinks they’ll be inheriting from you? Or they want you around to help them when they need it?

Either way, it doesn’t matter what they think. Or anyone else, come to that. You’ve worked hard, you’ve earned your money, go and enjoy it!

HangingOnJustAbout · 08/09/2024 20:24

Agree with pp, driving or train to Europe (trains are so good over there) would give best of both worlds.

But really if you want to fly then fly. Unfortunately any of us changing our habits to help the planet has minimal impact, governments need to step in.

Sinuhe · 08/09/2024 20:24

Surely it's up to you and your finances.

But, it also depends on the holiday.

I visited 3 major European cities this since April and a few other places.... it feels like a lot and I am looking forward to spending the next few months at home.

MrsHamlet · 08/09/2024 20:24

My stepmother likes to tell me what I should do and where I should go.

It's absolutely nothing to do with her.

If you can afford it, do as you please.

gokartdillydilly · 08/09/2024 20:24

Yep. Travel travel travel. Ignore the jealousy

tarheelbaby · 08/09/2024 20:25

Do what you want to do! It's your time.

Brush off that born-again rellie. Remind them of their trips abroad. (Oh, Uncle XX, didn't you visit ... a few years ago?) If you're feeling cheeky, ask them what they enjoyed in Cyprus, .. Florida, ... wherever.d OR ask them where their next UK holiday will be so that you can swap notes?

BIossomtoes · 08/09/2024 20:25

Do it while you can.

AngelicInnocent · 08/09/2024 20:26

I've just reached the point of properly grown up DC. I'm really enjoying my 2 holidays a year now. When I retire, I intend to double that. Enjoy, you've worked and waited for it.

Araminta1003 · 08/09/2024 20:26

Get the train and then there are no eco reasons and it is great to travel by train through Europe anyway.

JustMarriedBecca · 08/09/2024 20:27

I'm all for travelling but I don't think you should fly. The world is really F**ed.

Get yourself a first class interrail ticket and really do it. Like three months type travel. There are inter-rail groups on Facebook and people travel for 6 months at a time when they are retired!

This ^^

We are on our only abroad trip this year. Last year we went on 2 the year before 3, next year we have 2 booked- no one else's business. I'd be well pi**ed off if someone tried to dictate my holidays. I work bloody hard for them!

1983Louise · 08/09/2024 20:29

Tell them to bugger off, enjoy this new chapter of your life..............

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 08/09/2024 20:29

Go and see the world :)

MrsTigerface · 08/09/2024 20:30

I feel like I could have written this. DH and I retired earlier this year and have spent our time since travelling (a mix of overseas and UK breaks). It’s what we always wanted to do, and we saved hard for it. I think you’ll find that some people saying these things are simply jealous of you. You go where you want, when you want. If you’re anything like us, you’ve saved for this and looked forward to it for years. Don’t let anyone derail your retirement plans. We are simply not acknowledging the naysayers, and going our own sweet way. Enjoy x

CharlieDickens · 08/09/2024 20:31

It's your retirement, so really up to you.

kitsuneghost · 08/09/2024 20:31

YANBU
I would travel. UK holiday places are awful. Full of dogs

Intheoldendays · 08/09/2024 20:31

H is retired and I'm slightly less than full time and we have two holidays in the same European country and one in this country each year.

They're cheap and cheerful and many years if child rearing and working bloody hard to give the kids a good life means that I reckon we deserve it!!

peepsypops · 08/09/2024 20:33

Do it without a shadow of a doubt and enjoy every minute!

Travel feeds the soul I say - I hope to do the same as you!
