Do you buy expensive trainers…for your kids

Do you buy make trainers, trendy type ones for £50 or so for your little ones-5/6 year olds or go for a cheaper pair?
Is it ridiculous to spend that amount on a little one

When really small they liked and wore novelty trainers...barbie...sonic etc. As they got older I bought branded trainers because I wear branded trainers. Always have. As did their dad. I'm 51 now and trainers are a thing I still love. My wardrobe looks like a shoe shop. Still in boxes. I own 3 running pairs and about 5 sport pairs and 4 fashion branded pairs. I do have about 3 non branded pairs too. Some ladies like handbags I suppose 🤷🏼‍♀️

NuffSaidSam · 04/09/2024 22:36

Expensive, yes, but Geox/Clarks ones, not sports branded ones.

They wear trainers all the time so it seems reasonable to buy good quality ones that fit their feet. They basically live in trainers and school shoes so they're good quality.

FuzzyDiva · 04/09/2024 22:39

Once they are school age, yes.

idontwanttoadult · 04/09/2024 22:39

Guilty 🙈 3 DS (8,6,3) they have a few pairs of trainers each.. Sports ones for PE (Nike, adidas etc.) and some snazzy ones for days out and weekends (Vans, New balance..) but also a pair of cheap Sainsbury's ones to wreck on Walks / Beach.

Normandy144 · 04/09/2024 22:41

No I don't. Don't see the point in spending money on branded shoes when they don't know what they are. I generally get their trainers for school from decathlon.

Faminhotcheetos · 04/09/2024 22:42

I was going to get my Dd, 6, a pair of Adidas Gazelle type trainers-here-just the price seems a bit indulgent, she will wear them for school and for sports etc and at weekends so I suppose that justifies it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Like a PP I buy good quality, expensive trainers but not branded ones like Nike or Adidas. The priority is that their feet are comfortable and well supported.

They don’t look like particularly sport appropriate trainers to me. They’re a fashion shoe.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 04/09/2024 22:44

I buy shoes that are good for his feet, soft natural materials, flexible sole, wide toe box. They are usually not cheap. I'm not paying that amount of money for hard, unsupportive, synthetic shoes because they have a brand name on them

DonnatellaLyman · 04/09/2024 22:45

Yes because someone in John Lewis once persuaded me to buy Clark’s and they were just so, so rubbish in comparison to good quality trainers. Heavy, flat sole, rubbish support, looked terrible after a couple of wears and took forever to dry.

They are not appropriate for sports.

No my 5 year old has cheap supermarket trainers. When she is older if she asks for brands she can have them (within reason) but not yet. She is quite happy with some rainbow ones from Next for PE.

CuttySarcasm · 04/09/2024 22:47

Decathlon are brilliant, so long lasting, pretty much all trainers/football boots/astro trainers all come from there now.

gaininginsight · 04/09/2024 22:48

I only spent up to £50 on Clarks shoes when they were 5/6 but trainers, no. Unfortunately when they reached ages 9/10 it was only Nike/Addidas. Not sure I've done the right thing by giving in but they love them and get lots of use out of them. Plus can get good deals in sports direct sometimes. I think 5/6 is too young for them to even care what brands are. Age 10 should be aswell but kids seem to grow up so much faster than we did. I don't think I was aware of bigger brands until I was 16!

TheChosenTwo · 04/09/2024 22:48

Yes, just because we always wear them ourselves. Had younger nieces and nephews to pass them on if wanted once mine had outgrown them so they used to get some good wear out of them.
I do love trainers though, particularly computer ones!

TheChosenTwo · 04/09/2024 22:49

COLOURFUL!
no idea what computer trainers might be 😂

Gothamcity · 04/09/2024 22:50

The gazelle are actually quite heavy with a very solid sole and not very suitable for p.e. I have a pair of gazelle and certainly wouldn't wear them for running or even long walks as they are more of a fashion trainer than a sports one. Something like the Nike "star runner" style trainers and most sketchers ones are really good, very flexible and lightweight, and much better for kids for running around in. Adidas also do a more lightweight sports trainer for kids which would be much more suitable.

Putmeinsummer · 04/09/2024 22:56

We have geox trainers for my preschooler.

My eldest in year 5 gets branded trainers but not very expensive, so £40-50 Nike, Adidas type ones. Mainly because I cannot stand wearing supermarket trainers, they are so inflexible and uncomfortable.

She has friends who wear £150+ trainers which seems far too much but each to their own.

Lovely but not trainers for PE / sport.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 04/09/2024 23:00

I often get branded ones from Vinted, you can find some nearly good as new. Especially for my dd as she doesn't really care about trainers. My ds loves trainers (he's 6!) so I have let him choose from JD etc sometimes. Football boots come from decathlon.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 04/09/2024 23:01

I’ve always been one for buying cheap decathlon trainers. We obviously have walking boots and stuff but for school PE and generally wandering about.

My 10 yo Ds has just got into the idea of expensive trainers unfortunately!

Seashellsbytheseashire · 04/09/2024 23:02

At 5/6 we would buy branded sports trainers, although they may have had less trendy ones like hummel or asics if they were the better fit. They also usually had a pair of something like converse that were more fashion trainers, to wear with dresses/ suits etc. I never spent £50 on trainers for a 6 year old. I wouldn't buy gazelles for a child to do sport in because they are totally unsuitable. Lots of the Nike and Adidas trainers are about £30 and much more suitable.

QuotetheRaven · 04/09/2024 23:05

We generally get them Sketchers, comfy and tend to last with funky colours. Clothes from Zara, Next, Joules.
I would say though buy what fits within your budget, don't go into debt for clothes.

Crazycatlady79 · 04/09/2024 23:08

My twin DDs seem to have inherited my love for trainers.
I have an huge collection from over the years and they are my only vice; nowadays, as I'm poor, I buy preloved online once in a blue moon for myself.
The girls go for branded - Nike, Adidas and Puma retro styles and I source these preloved or heavily discounted online.
Btw, Adidas Gazelles are the last style I'd buy for sport: I love Gazelles, but they are shit for sport.

ThePoetInMyHeart · 04/09/2024 23:12

DD lives in trainers. She's also quite petite so doesn't grow out of them too fast. She has 2 pairs of New Balance trainers currently: they are her only shoes aside from wellies and sandals. I find that they last well and are suitable for everything she does activity-wise. I'll get her a new pair of winter boots for really cold weather but overall I don't think it's vastly extravagant. Her school doesn't have a uniform so she doesn't have separate school shoes.

StressedQueen · 04/09/2024 23:13

I have 4 daughters and they have always been happy with good quality but colourful trainers as little girls! I see no need to get branded trainers when they'll be growing out of them. My two older daughters are both 14 now and get branded though and I don't mind as it's long-lasting. But at primary school age, supermarket ones are the way to go!
