Do you buy expensive trainers…for your kids

Faminhotcheetos · 04/09/2024 22:24

Do you buy make trainers, trendy type ones for £50 or so for your little ones-5/6 year olds or go for a cheaper pair?
Is it ridiculous to spend that amount on a little one

I would not buy super expensive shoes for kids unless they were able to look after them. That being said I do get DD decent shoes from Clarks because my mum always instilled in us the importance of quality shoes for growing feet. Not sure how the prices compare tbh!

Ethelswith · 05/09/2024 08:33

The youngest I've bought expensive trainers for any of the DC were ASICS Netburners for DD when she was about 15 and playing higher level netball.

I've bought good trainers for DSes once university age and getting in to other sports (it was outdoors football and hockey - both played in studded boots before that)

They tended to live in Converse or decaying old whatever-they-had-for-school-PE trainers (usually something from Decathlon) as day to day non-uniform footwear

My daughter couldn't get her feet into supermarket trainers when I went to see if we could get some one weekend. They were all really hard. I have basically bought her branded from toddler age however I would never spend RRP on a small child. Like a PP I've bought from Vinted or marketplace secondhand - got Adidas, Nike and converse via there for £2 a pair or even a couple of pairs free. Great condition after a wash and like they would've been after a week or two of her wear anyway. As she's gotten older and it's harder to get decent condition secondhand (I think the very little sizes were great because not everyone's kids walk very young or run about alot and they stay decent) I have used sports direct online to buy them in the sale. I've never spent £20 or over, always below that. Not that far off some supermarket/large chain store own brands

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 05/09/2024 08:41

Whatever is in Sports Direct or M and M. Clarkes never suited my feet or DS they always rubbed and chaffed no matter what size. I wore Birthdays I think they were called when little.

AIstolemylunch · 05/09/2024 08:44

Whatever trainers you get, waterproof spray them when new as helps the m3sh type ones be more waterproof and last longer.

Devilsmommy · 05/09/2024 08:46

My 2yo has always had Adidas trainers. They're a perfect fit and really good quality. I just paid £50 for a pair recently when he went up a size. I think if you want to buy your daughter branded trainers then it's no-one else's business. Though the Adidas gazelle are really not a good trainer for sports

Lovelysummerdays · 05/09/2024 08:54

My budget is probably £30 ish. Going up to £70 +for high school child with adult sized feet. I buy sketchers/ Geox for little ones mainly as I know they fit. Top tip is Amazon filter by size then by price for a brand you know. You can often find a £50-£60 pair of shoes for around £30. Also check out the Amazon warehouse you can pick up bargain shoes that people have tried on and returned.

FussyPud · 05/09/2024 08:56

I have never paid more than £50 for a pair of trainers for anybody in the family. At the age your daughter is they were all wearing properly fitted shoes.

Middle child is 17, wearing some weirdly neon puma abominations.

Youngest is in some Nike basketball efforts that were white once upon a time for weekend shenanigans. He pointed out something with bubbles in the heel last time we were buying PE trainers, and at about £150 I just laughed and said no.

99RedBallonz · 05/09/2024 09:11

Mine both have wide feet so I can buy supermarket cheap ones. They are all really narrow. My eldest has Geox at the moment and they weren't cheap but they are comfortable and the only pair he has. The youngest one is currently wearing hand me down Clarks trainers and Crocs.

papadontpreach2me · 05/09/2024 11:16

Yes all branded trainers in my house. Just bought ds an eye watering expensive pair for Christmas

FawnFrenchieMum · 05/09/2024 11:20

I have pretty much always bought branded trainers as they last week and were worn a lot (especially for my DS), DD tended to have a bigger range of footwear but I wouldn't buy those Gazelles for the purpose you mentioned. Proper sports trainers yes but they are fashion shoes and not suitable for sports, PE or long distance walking.

FatmanandKnobbin · 05/09/2024 11:26

I buy my 9yo expensive trainers, she does multiple sports and is very active, the cheaper ones last a month, whereas the expensive ones last her 5-6 months.

Her sister, who is 7, doesn't have any interest in sports, and her hobbies aren't very active, so she gets cheaper trainers as hers last.

It's not about the brand, it's how hard wearing they are.

Ozanj · 05/09/2024 11:28

I buy ds Nike’s for everything. he has seperate trainers for seperate activities - one as school shoes, one casual, one sports shoe for running at school, and football shoes. You can’t buy a single shoe for it all and if you do it’s certainly not Gazelles. They are hard soled and not suitable for sport.

Kitkat1523 · 05/09/2024 11:40

I buy my GDs converse every year for summer ( 8 and 5) ….their parents buy them adidas trainers for winter months

FrenchandSaunders · 05/09/2024 11:42

Not aged 6, no I didn't. Usually supermarket ones. By the time they get to year 6 though these things often become important to them so I used to get labelled ones then. The really expensive ones tended to be a xmas or birthday present.

Mandylovescandy · 05/09/2024 12:02

I don't buy branded stuff for the name but don't mind spending on shoes (we get all clothes second hand and the occasional shoe plus hand down from eldest if shoe is still in good condition and fits well) as want to make sure it is a good fit for them. Mine don't have loads of shoes though - one pair of trainers that are ok for school as well plus during the summer they had a cheap pair for the beach

I agree re gazelles not for long distance walking but DD wore Nike 95's for a 10 day trip of 15k a day in Canada. She was the only one of the group that didn't get blisters.

Yes I bought both DD's branded trainers from about 12yo. They worked out good value as they were worn so much.

MrsSunshine2b · 05/09/2024 12:34

I'll pay £40-50 for a high quality pair of Clarks or barefoot brand shoes, although usually I manage to buy new with tags on Vinted for £20-25 instead

I won't ever pay £50-200 for the latest trend in sporty brands, not least because they are tacky af.

I might consider it if I was advised they needed shoes for a specific sport and they were taking that sport seriously.

palentan · 05/09/2024 12:35

Yes but we only have 1 or 2 pairs of shoes for each child at any one time, so they wear them almost daily. Either sports brands or Clarks, Geox etc. Often bought cheaper online or in sales. I've bought supermarket shoes in the past and they just don't last as well. I will go cheap on clothes but go for brands on coats and shoes .

LaurieFairyCake · 05/09/2024 12:47

I've always been able to get branded ones for £10-£15 in sports direct or eBay

caringcarer · 05/09/2024 13:13

I've never bought my kids expensive trainers except for sport use only.

Lordofmyflies · 05/09/2024 13:16

Please dont buy Gazelles for sport. They are designed to be a fashion trainer. With developing feet it is so important to get a correct fit and shoe for the activity. For P.E / impact sports, age 6, look for a trainer with great shock absorption yet enough support for their developing arches.

Itsanyonesguess · 05/09/2024 13:19

Certainly as a teenager we bought him what trainers he wanted. Having grown up being the untrendiest kids at school, my brother and I always vowed not to have our kids picked on like that. It matters, whether we like it or not.

This particular child is 5 though.

fruitbrewhaha · 05/09/2024 13:23

You don’t do sport in gazelles. They are leisure shoes.

Buy proper shoes and stop being influenced by fashion trends.
